A 20 mm watch strap is 20 mm wide where it attaches to the watch; that number does not tell you how long the strap is. To choose a comfortable fit, first confirm your watch’s lug width and attachment type, then measure your wrist and use the strap maker’s length chart.
What does “20 mm” mean on a watch strap?
It ordinarily means the width of the strap at the watch end: the distance between the inside faces of the lugs where the strap sits. It is not the strap length, wrist circumference, case diameter, or buckle width. Watch and Strap Co describes the measurement as the internal distance between the lugs in its 20mm Watch Strap Guide for the Right Fit (August 16, 2026); this is retailer guidance, not a formal industry standard.

Measure the gap between the lugs on the exact watch, or check the manufacturer’s specification for its exact model or reference. If that gap is 20 mm, choose a strap measuring 20 mm at the watch end. A strap that is too narrow may leave a gap; one that is too wide may not seat correctly. Do not force a near-size strap into place. Case diameter alone does not establish lug width, and the measurement can differ between models from the same maker.

Matching lug width is necessary, but it does not guarantee that a strap will attach to your watch. Many conventional watches use spring bars; some straps have quick-release spring bars, and some watches use proprietary or integrated attachment systems that require a specific construction. Confirm what the watch accepts before ordering. The Union Glashütte 2024 straps and clasps catalog, for example, lists model-level width and quick-release differences, illustrating why one maker’s models should not be assumed to share the same specification.

Measure your wrist and choose strap length
Measure where the watch will sit
Wrap a flexible tape around your wrist where you normally wear the watch. If you do not have a flexible tape, use a strip of paper, mark where it meets, and measure the strip against a ruler. If you plan to wear the watch over a sleeve or wetsuit, measure with that layer in place.
Use the strap’s own dimensions and chart
Compare your wrist measurement with the specific strap maker’s sizing chart and stated dimensions. Two-piece straps are often listed as two lengths, long side and short side; a listing such as 120/75 mm gives the dimensions of the two sections separately. Conventions and adjustment ranges vary by maker, so check how the seller defines its measurements. “Short,” “regular,” and “long” are not universal sizes unless the seller explains them.

Do not choose a strap by adding its two section lengths and matching that total to your wrist circumference. The watch head occupies part of the circumference, and the buckle, adjustment holes, keepers, and maker’s measurement convention all affect the fit. The guides from RSM Watch Strap and Helvetus cover wrist measurement and long/short length notation; neither establishes universal cutoffs for length labels.
Check the fit when fastened
Once fitted, the strap should close securely at a comfortable adjustment position, with enough tail to sit in the keepers. If your wrist falls near the edge of a stated range, check the maker’s usable adjustment information rather than relying only on a short/regular/long label. For wear over clothing or equipment, choose a strap whose published range accommodates the measurement you took with that layer in place; there is no single allowance that applies to every strap and wearer.

Compare compatible straps by more than length
After confirming lug width and attachment, compare the specifications that affect how the strap will wear and look:
- Length range: Match the maker’s chart to your wrist measurement and confirm the buckle can fasten at a comfortable position.
- Material: Leather, suede, sailcloth, and FKM rubber are among the available categories. The cited guidance does not establish a tested ranking among them, so choose according to your preferences and intended use.
- Taper and buckle width: A strap marked 20-to-16 mm is 20 mm wide at the lugs and narrows to 16 mm at the buckle. The buckle-end width is not the lug width.
- Thickness and proportions: Where the maker publishes them, consider strap thickness, taper, and how the strap’s proportions suit the case.
- Hardware: Quick-release can make strap changes easier on compatible watches. Standard spring bars remain common, but check that the watch accepts the selected bar type.
What you may need to change a strap
A correctly specified 20 mm replacement strap is the direct purchase if your watch has a 20 mm lug gap and compatible attachment. A spring-bar tool may help with a conventional spring-bar change. Replacement bars are only needed when appropriate, and their length, tip, diameter, and construction can depend on the watch; do not select them by strap width alone. Check the watch’s model-specific information before ordering hardware.
