Check fit before choosing a material
“20 mm” refers to strap width, not a universal watch fit. Measure the space between the lugs or check the watch maker’s specifications, then confirm the replacement strap’s stated width and attachment. A current secondary guide lists 18, 20, 22, and 24 mm among common strap widths; that does not mean every watch accepts all of them. See The Watchology / Chrono Mind strap guide.
- Width: Confirm the lug width and the strap width match.
- Attachment: Check spring-bar compatibility and how the strap connects to the watch.
- Length: Make sure the strap suits your wrist.
- Buckle and hardware: Check that the hardware and finish work with your watch and preferences.
- Material and care: Read the seller’s exact material description and care instructions rather than relying on a broad material label.
Choose by how you wear the watch
For a dressier appearance: leather
Leather is the straightforward choice if appearance is the priority. Its suitability for water, comfort, and upkeep depends on the specific leather, lining, and maker’s guidance; the word “leather” alone does not settle those questions.

For water-oriented use: rubber, with product-specific checks
TAG Heuer describes its rubber straps as water resistant. Do not extend that claim to every rubber strap or assume it makes a watch suitable for swimming or diving. Check the exact strap’s instructions and the watch’s own water-resistance rating separately.
For a fabric, thread-through design: NATO-style nylon
NATO-style straps are associated with single-piece or thread-through nylon construction. TUDOR describes nylon thread-through straps as well as its own adjustable fabric interpretation. Check the particular strap’s dimensions and hardware: construction and thickness can affect whether it works with your watch.

A category name is not a substitute for the product specification.
