Lug width is the distance, measured in millimeters, between the inside faces of the watch’s lugs where the strap attaches. Match that measurement to the width of a replacement strap at its watch end. A correct width is essential, but watches with curved, notched, or integrated strap ends may also require a model-specific fit check.
What lug width means
The lugs are the parts of the watch case that extend around the strap attachment. Lug width is the gap between the two inner faces of one pair of lugs. It determines how wide the strap must be at the point where it meets the watch.

For example, a 20 mm lug width calls for a strap that is 20 mm wide at the watch end. Nixon’s manufacturer guide describes its own replacement straps in widths of 16 mm, 20 mm, and 23 mm; those are brand-specific examples, not a survey of the most common sizes. Nixon’s watch strap guide says its straps are usually whole-millimeter widths in a 16–24 mm range. Treat that as Nixon’s guidance, not a universal range for every watch.

How to measure lug width
- Make the attachment accessible. Set the watch on a soft surface and remove the strap if it blocks the measurement.
- Find the inner faces. Locate the two facing sides of the lugs at the point where the strap sits.
- Measure across the gap. Use a ruler marked in millimeters or calipers, measuring from inner face to inner face.
- Check the exact watch specification. Compare your result with the manufacturer’s sizing information for the model or reference number, if available. If the measurement seems fractional or unclear, measure again rather than rounding by guesswork. Nixon notes that its listed strap widths are usually whole millimeters.
- Choose a matching strap. Match the strap’s watch-end width to the lug width, then check that its attachment and end shape are compatible with the watch.
Measurements that are easy to confuse
Several dimensions describe different parts of a watch or strap. Use lug width for the strap-to-watch fit; do not substitute the case diameter, the distance across the outside ends of the lugs, or a strap measurement taken at the buckle.

| Measurement or feature | What it describes | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Lug width | The gap between the inside faces of the lugs at the strap attachment | Match it to the strap width at the watch end. |
| Lug-to-lug | The distance from one outer end of the lugs to the other | Helps assess how the watch spans the wrist; it is not the strap width. |
| Case diameter | The width of the watch case | Describes case size, not the lug gap. |
| Strap length | The lengths of the strap sections that wrap around the wrist | Helps select a strap length for the wearer after attachment width is known. |
| Buckle width | The width of the strap where it meets the buckle | Relevant when replacing a buckle or matching strap design; it is separate from watch-end width. |
| Lug or strap-end shape | The profile of the attachment, such as straight, curved, or notched | May determine compatibility even when the width matches. |
NOMOS’s explanation of lug-to-lug defines it as the distance between the outer ends of the lugs. Jean Rousseau’s strap measurement guide separately identifies lug width, buckle width, strap lengths, and several lug-end profiles.
When matching width is not enough
A strap can have the right width and still fail to fit if its end shape or attachment style does not suit the watch. Strap guides illustrate straight, round, curved, ogive, notched, indented, and square profiles. Shaped ends, integrated straps, and proprietary attachment systems are reasons to check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model or reference instead of relying on width alone.

Once fit is established, compare strap length for the wearer and consider material, style, and buckle-end width if relevant. These are separate choices; there is no single best material or style established by the sizing guidance.

- Start with the watch’s model-specific lug-width specification when the maker provides one.
- If you measure the watch, use millimeters and check the result against the specification where possible.
- Confirm both the watch-end width and the shape or attachment style, especially for unusual or integrated designs.
- Choose strap length for the wearer; do not use it to infer lug width.
- Check buckle-end width only when replacing a buckle or when that dimension matters to the strap design.
Manufacturer product examples are not a guide to what will fit another brand or model. Nixon’s guide supports model-specific sizing, and NOMOS says its store lists strap lug width. For any particular watch, verify the exact reference before buying.
