Usually, no: for a conventional watch strap, match the strap width to the watch’s lug width. A 20mm strap is wider than 19mm lugs and may be difficult to seat cleanly; on 21mm lugs it is too narrow and leaves a gap. Measure the space between the lugs rather than relying on case diameter.
What happens with each lug width?

How to choose the right strap width
- Find the lug width. Check the exact watch reference’s specifications or measure the inside distance between the lugs where the strap and spring bar sit. Case diameter does not tell you the lug width.
- Check the strap at the watch end. A tapered strap may narrow toward the buckle; the buckle-end measurement is not the lug width. RSM Watch Strap explains strap sizing.
- Confirm the attachment. A matching strap width does not establish that its spring bar has the right dimensions for your watch. The bar ends must engage the lug holes fully; some models use unusual dimensions or watch-specific hardware. WristFit’s Seiko sizing reference illustrates why model-specific details matter.
- Check the fit before wearing the watch. Make sure the strap sits properly and the spring bar is engaged on both sides. Do not force a strap that will not seat.
When a 1mm mismatch might be considered
Flexible NATO-style straps
Barton says its NATO-style strap may be squeezed into an odd-sized lug gap by choosing the next size up. That is advice for a particular flexible construction, not a general rule for all fabric straps, and not evidence that an oversized strap will fit every watch securely or look right. Leather, rubber, metal, and model-specific attachments
Do not assume a conventional leather, rubber, or metal strap can safely be compressed or stretched to compensate for a 1mm difference. Watches with integrated bracelets, shaped end links, or proprietary attachments need the manufacturer’s guidance for that exact model. The practical choice
For 19mm lugs, order 19mm; for 21mm lugs, order 21mm. Consider a 20mm NATO-style strap on a 19mm watch only if its maker specifically recommends that fit and the hardware seats securely. A 20mm strap on 21mm lugs remains undersized, so an exact-width strap is the straightforward choice.
