How to Measure Your Wrist for a 38mm Cushion-Case Watch

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wrap a soft measuring tape around the wrist where the watch will sit—just behind or above the wrist bone. Keep the tape close to the skin but do not pull it tight, then record the circumference in millimetres or centimetres. A paper strip and ruler work just as well when you do not have a tape.

For a 38mm cushion case, circumference is only the starting point. Check the watch’s lug-to-lug length against the flat width of the top of your wrist, because the lugs—not the 38mm label alone—determine whether the watch overhangs. Cushion cases often look and wear smaller than round cases with the same nominal diameter, but their exact lug span, thickness and curvature still decide comfort.

Why a 38mm measurement does not tell you whether the watch will fit

“38mm” normally describes the case’s nominal diameter or width across its main body. It does not tell you the distance from one lug tip to the other, how thick the case is, how sharply the lugs curve, or how much of your wrist is flat enough to support the case. Those dimensions can vary substantially between watches carrying the same 38mm designation.

A cushion case has a rounded-square profile rather than a perfect circle. Its horizontal body can be shorter than the diameter of a round case, so it may wear more compactly on the same wrist. That is a useful tendency, not a guarantee. A cushion case with long, straight lugs can still overhang a narrow wrist, while a watch with short, downward-curving lugs may sit neatly even when its case is nominally the same size as a larger-wearing round model.

The reliable fit check therefore has two parts:

  • Circumference: the distance around your wrist at the actual wearing position.
  • Footprint: the watch’s lug-to-lug length compared with the flat top width of your wrist.

Use circumference to narrow the size range, then use lug-to-lug and the other physical dimensions to make the final decision.

What you need before measuring

A flexible measuring tape

A soft body-measuring tape is the simplest tool. It follows the wrist’s curve and gives a direct circumference reading in millimetres or centimetres. A rigid metal tape is difficult to position accurately and can leave gaps or create pressure, so avoid using one if a flexible option is available.

Paper and a ruler

If you do not have a soft tape, cut or tear a narrow strip of ordinary paper. It must be long enough to circle your wrist without stretching. A ruler with millimetre markings is preferable; centimetre markings are also adequate if you record the result consistently.

The watch specifications

When comparing a particular 38mm cushion-case watch, collect four specifications from its product information or technical sheet:

  • lug-to-lug length;
  • case thickness;
  • lug width, which determines the strap width;
  • case shape and lug curvature, ideally from photographs showing the side and underside.

If a listing gives only “38mm,” it has not provided enough information for a confident footprint check. Treat the missing dimensions as an unresolved fit variable rather than assuming that every 38mm watch wears alike.

How to measure your wrist correctly

  1. Find the seating point. Bend your hand slightly and identify the wrist bone on the thumb side. Measure just behind or above that prominent bone, where the watch will actually rest. Do not measure in the middle of your forearm or directly over the bone if that is not where you wear a watch.
  2. Relax your hand and wrist. Let your fingers rest naturally. Clenching your hand can change the wrist’s shape and make the result unnecessarily large.
  3. Position the flexible tool. Wrap the soft tape around the selected point. Keep it level all the way around rather than allowing it to angle toward the hand or forearm.
  4. Set strap-like tension. The tape should touch the skin without digging in. It should feel like a watch strap worn for an ordinary day: close enough not to leave a large gap, but not tightened to compress the wrist. Do not pull the tape taut to obtain a smaller number.
  5. Read the overlap. With a tape, note the mark where the free end meets the scale. With paper, mark the overlap with a pen, remove the strip without changing its length, and measure from its end to the mark with a ruler.
  6. Record the result. Write the circumference in millimetres or centimetres, including the unit. For example, record “15.6cm” or “156mm,” not simply “15.6.”
  7. Repeat once. Take a second reading after removing and replacing the tape. If the readings differ, check that you measured at the same height and with the same relaxed tension, then use the consistent result rather than averaging careless placements.

The number you record is your wrist circumference at the watch’s seating point. Keep it available while you compare cases and straps; it is more useful than a vague description such as “small wrist” or “average wrist.”

Starting size ranges for a 38mm watch

Published size charts are starting points, not fit guarantees. Kensington’s chart gives the following pairings between wrist circumference and case-size ranges:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Wrist circumference Suggested case range Approximate maximum lug-to-lug in the same chart
Under 15cm 32–36mm About 44mm
15–16cm 34–38mm Not stated
16–17cm 38–41mm Not stated
17–18cm 40–43mm Not stated
Over 18cm 42–46mm About 55mm

The chart’s lug-to-lug figures run from approximately 44mm for wrists under 15cm to approximately 55mm for wrists over 18cm; it does not state an intermediate maximum for every circumference band. These are broad starting ranges because wrist shape, case proportions and lug geometry differ.

Shinola places 38mm, 40mm or 42mm cases in a 6–7 inch wrist range and likewise cautions that lug distance can differ between watches with the same case diameter. The two charts are useful for orientation, but neither replaces the actual lug-to-lug comparison.

Converting between centimetres and inches

Many watch listings use millimetres or centimetres, while some wrist charts use inches. One inch equals 2.54cm. To convert a measurement, divide centimetres by 2.54 for inches, or multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres. Keep the original measurement beside the conversion so rounding does not hide a boundary between chart ranges.

Check lug-to-lug against the flat top of your wrist

Lug-to-lug is the distance from the outer tip of one lug to the outer tip of the opposite lug. It describes the watch’s length across your wrist and is the main measurement for spotting overhang.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the watch’s lug-to-lug number. Look for a specification stated in millimetres. Do not substitute case width; the two dimensions answer different questions.
  2. View your wrist from above. Keep your wrist in a natural position and identify the relatively flat area across its top. The sides curve away from this surface.
  3. Compare the span. The lugs should stay within that flat area. If a lug extends beyond the wrist’s edge, the watch may rock, feel unstable or look visibly too long even when the circumference chart suggests that 38mm is reasonable.
  4. Account for lug shape. Downward-curving or closely integrated lugs can follow the wrist more effectively than long, straight lugs with the same measured span. Use photographs or an in-person view to judge the curvature rather than relying on the number alone.

For very small or very large wrists, this footprint check matters more than the nominal case size. A 38mm cushion case can be a good match when its lug span is compact, while another 38mm model can overhang because its lugs add length beyond the cushion body.

Evaluate thickness, curvature and strap dimensions

Case thickness and sleeve clearance

Thickness determines how far the watch rises from the wrist. A thicker case can catch on a shirt cuff or jacket sleeve even when its length is suitable. Check the stated thickness and consider the clothing you normally wear. If cuff clearance is important, compare the watch’s side profile with the available space rather than judging only from a top-down photograph.

Case and lug curvature

Two watches with identical lug-to-lug measurements can feel different if one has lugs that turn down toward the wrist and the other has a flatter, straighter profile. Curvature affects contact area and stability. A case that follows the wrist can distribute pressure more evenly; a rigid profile may leave a gap under one end or concentrate pressure at the opposite end.

Lug width and strap fit

Lug width is the distance between the lugs where the strap or bracelet attaches. It determines the strap width you need. A strap that is too narrow can leave visible gaps and allow extra movement; one that is too wide may not fit between the lugs at all. Check lug width before ordering a replacement strap, and check strap length so the buckle can sit near the center of your wrist rather than at an extreme position.

How to judge the fit when the watch is on your wrist

Once the circumference and specifications look compatible, assess the watch in the position where you will actually wear it. Place the case just behind or above the wrist bone, not several centimetres up the forearm. Fasten the strap at a comfortable tension and let your hand move normally.

  • Warm Prompt: When using a retractable black tape measure, if the tape measure extends a long length, you can press the button in the middle to make the tape measure retract quickly, or there will be loud noise.
  • Look for lug overhang. From above, each lug should remain on the flat top of the wrist. A lug that crosses the edge is a warning sign even if the watch feels secure.
  • Check movement. Rotate and flex your wrist. The case should not slide dramatically toward the hand or forearm during ordinary movement.
  • Check pressure points. Notice whether a lug, case edge or buckle presses sharply into the skin. Pressure concentrated at one point usually indicates an unfavorable shape or tension, not a need to tighten the strap further.
  • Check clearance. Confirm that the thickness does not interfere with the cuff or other clothing you routinely wear.
  • Check strap centering. The strap should sit symmetrically and leave the buckle in a usable position. If the strap cannot center, its length or lug width may be wrong even when the case footprint is acceptable.

Wear the watch with the hand relaxed and then with the wrist bent. A fit that looks correct while the wrist is completely straight can become uncomfortable when the hand is raised or flexed.

Applying the chart to common wrist measurements

Wrist under 15cm

Kensington’s starting range for this circumference is 32–36mm, with an approximate maximum lug-to-lug of 44mm. A 38mm cushion case is outside that chart’s initial case range, so do not approve it from the case number alone. It would need a particularly compact lug span and favorable curvature to avoid overhang; measure the watch footprint directly before deciding.

Wrist from 15 to 16cm

The chart places 34–38mm cases in this band, making a 38mm cushion case a plausible starting option. Measure the exact lug-to-lug length and compare it with your flat wrist width. A case at the upper edge of the range may still fit well if its lugs are short and curved, while a long-lug design may not.

Wrist from 16 to 17cm

Kensington lists 38–41mm as the starting range here, so 38mm sits at the lower end. Confirm thickness and lug span, especially if you prefer the watch to sit close to the hand or need generous cuff clearance.

Wrist from 17 to 18cm

The chart begins at 40mm for this band, but that does not make a 38mm cushion case unsuitable. Cushion geometry can make a case appear smaller than a round case, and personal preference matters. Use the lug-to-lug and thickness checks to determine whether the smaller visual presence is intentional and proportionate.

Wrist over 18cm

Kensington gives a 42–46mm starting range and approximately 55mm as the maximum lug-to-lug figure for wrists over 18cm. A 38mm case may look deliberately compact on this wrist size. Verify that the strap can wrap comfortably and decide whether you want that compact appearance before buying.

Common measuring mistakes and how to correct them

Measuring over the wrist bone

Placing the tape directly on the most prominent part of the bone can shift the seating point away from where the watch will rest. Reposition the tape just behind or above the bone and repeat the reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pulling the tape tight

Tight tension produces a smaller circumference than a wearable strap requires. Loosen the tape until it touches the skin without indentation, then record that relaxed value.

Measuring the hand instead of the wrist

Wrapping the tape around the broadest part of the hand or too far down the forearm does not describe the watch’s position. Mark the intended seating point first, then measure there.

Using case width as the overhang check

Case width cannot reveal how far the lugs extend. Obtain lug-to-lug and compare that dimension with the flat wrist width from above.

Ignoring thickness

A watch can have an acceptable top-down footprint yet interfere with sleeves because of its height. Add thickness and cuff clearance to your specification checklist.

Assuming every 38mm case wears the same

Case shape, lug curvature and lug span alter the visual and physical fit. Compare the complete dimensions of each model rather than transferring your experience with one 38mm watch to another.

A practical buying checklist

Before ordering a 38mm cushion-case watch, confirm each item below:

  • your wrist circumference measured at the intended seating point;
  • the unit used for that measurement, in millimetres or centimetres;
  • the watch’s lug-to-lug length;
  • the flat top width of your wrist and whether both lugs can remain inside it;
  • case thickness relative to your usual cuffs and sleeves;
  • lug width and a compatible strap width;
  • strap length sufficient to place the buckle comfortably;
  • lug curvature and case shape viewed from the side as well as from above;
  • your preference for a compact cushion-case appearance versus a larger presence.

If a seller does not state lug-to-lug, thickness or lug width, ask for those measurements before relying on the 38mm label. If they cannot provide them, the fit assessment remains less certain.

When a 38mm cushion case is the right choice

A 38mm cushion case is a sensible candidate when your measured circumference falls within a published starting range, its lug-to-lug length stays within the flat top of your wrist, and its thickness and strap dimensions suit your clothing and wearing habits. The compact horizontal shape can provide a smaller visual footprint than a round case of equal nominal size.

It is not the right choice solely because your wrist matches a number on a chart. The decisive sequence is circumference, lug-to-lug footprint, curvature, thickness and strap compatibility. Measuring in that order gives you a repeatable answer instead of relying on the case label or a generic “small,” “medium” or “large” wrist category.
