You can customize a Casio F-91W with a strap or color filter without changing its electronics, or go further by opening the watch for a negative display, backlight diffuser, LED swap, replacement circuit board or aftermarket case. The more a mod changes inside the watch, the more skill and compatibility checking it demands—and opening the case affects its water resistance unless the seal is restored and tested.
Choose a mod by effort, benefit and risk
F-91W modifications range from reversible exterior changes to electronics work. The table compares what each changes and the main trade-offs; it is not a head-to-head test, and fit can vary by module or regional variant.

For small cosmetic changes, start with a strap or filter. A negative display or diffuser involves internal disassembly; an LED swap adds soldering and possible battery-life cost. Boards and replacement cases are specialist projects, not simple drop-in upgrades unless the maker confirms fit for your watch.
Exterior changes: strap and display tint
Check the strap connection, not just the width
F91W.Watch lists the strap width as 18 mm. Width alone does not guarantee fit: verify how the strap attaches to the case and whether the replacement is made for that attachment. The guide describes strap changes as a common customization, but does not establish compatibility for every strap sold as 18 mm.

Use a color filter for a tint
A thin adhesive gel over the crystal can tint the display. The result depends on the material and application, and availability varies. This is an exterior optical change rather than an electronics upgrade; it does not improve the backlight’s underlying output.
Display and backlight mods require opening the watch
Negative display: a different LCD appearance
A negative-display conversion uses replacement linear polarizing film oriented differently from the original so the digits appear light on a dark background. It requires opening and disassembling the watch, but the modding reference does not describe soldering for this procedure. Film orientation and careful handling matter to the result.

Backlight spreader: a seller-listed insert
A third-party seller lists a plastic diffuser insert intended to spread the F-91W’s single-LED backlight across more of the display, and says it has been tested on the watch. Those fit and performance statements are the seller’s claims, not independent verification. The seller also says module disassembly is required, so check the exact module fit and consider the case-seal consequences before buying or installing it.
LED swaps, circuit boards and cases are advanced paths
LED replacement
Replacing the LED can change its color or brightness, but it requires soldering. The modding reference says the replacement draws somewhat more battery; it does not provide exact LED specifications or electrical compatibility guidance. Do not assume a visually similar surface-mount LED is a safe substitute without confirming its electrical fit.

Replacement electronics
Replacement boards can alter the watch’s functions and electronics. The specialist reference names Ollee Watch’s Module 593 replacement board and Sensor Watch Pro; Pluto’s GitHub documentation is the primary project source for Sensor Watch Pro. Before choosing a board, verify current availability, the exact F-91W module or variant it supports, required firmware and installation work, and expected battery life. The available material does not establish compatibility across all Module 593 or 3180 variants.
Aftermarket case
A titanium case option called Ti-1 from Heeler Watch Co is named in the specialist reference as a case intended to take stock components. Treat that as a lead to verify, not a universal fit guarantee: check the exact case model, module and components accepted, as well as current availability.

Opening the case: tools, gasket and water resistance
F91W.Watch states the F-91W has a 30-metre water-resistance rating before opening, and warns that removing the four-screw case back compromises water resistance unless the gasket is replaced and the reassembled watch is pressure-tested. This is guidance from that specialist reference, not a confirmed Casio warranty or service statement; it does not establish that any modded watch remains safe for swimming or immersion.
The guide recommends a JIS #000 driver for the small case-back screws and warns that a Phillips driver can round their heads. It says the gasket sits in a groove and should be checked whenever the back is removed.

- Before opening: Decide whether you can replace the gasket and arrange a pressure test after reassembly. If you need factory service rather than a mod, use the Casio support page for your region.
- Use the recommended driver: F91W.Watch recommends a JIS #000 driver; avoid forcing an ill-fitting Phillips driver into the screw heads.
- Inspect the seal: When the back is off, check the gasket in its groove. The guide says to replace it and have the assembled watch pressure-tested to restore confidence in water resistance.
- After reassembly: Do not infer water resistance from a snug case back or an intact-looking gasket. Without the specified pressure test, the modded watch’s resistance is not established.
Battery life: keep the published figure in context
F91W.Watch reports approximately seven years from a CR2016 3V battery under an assumed daily use of 20 seconds of alarm and one second of backlight. The figure is reported by that specialist site; the original official manual linked there was not directly verified, so confirm the manual for your module and regional variant before treating it as a Casio specification. The reference says an LED replacement draws somewhat more battery, but gives no quantified reduction, and battery life for replacement boards is not established.
Check compatibility before ordering parts
- Identify the watch: Check the module number and regional variant, then compare them with the part maker’s stated compatibility.
- For straps: Match the listed 18 mm width and confirm the case attachment style.
- For internal parts: Confirm the precise module fit, required disassembly, tools and any firmware or soldering needs.
- For case-opening mods: Account for the gasket and pressure test rather than assuming the original water-resistance rating still applies.
- For seller-listed products: Distinguish the seller’s own fit or test claims from independently established results; availability and pricing can change.
