For a remote purchase from an unfamiliar private seller, use a reputable escrow service you verify independently, with funds held until delivery and a clearly defined inspection period. Avoid sending an advance wire directly to a stranger: the U.S. Federal Trade Commission warns that buyers can lose wire payments in online purchases with little recourse. Escrow reduces payment risk only when the provider, instructions, terms, and dispute process are genuine—and it does not prove a watch is authentic or give you an automatic right to return it.
Which payment method is safest for a private watch sale?
For a remote transaction, the key question is whether a neutral, legitimate provider holds the money and defines when it can be released. Compare the actual terms—not just the payment method’s name.

| Arrangement | What it can do | What to verify or watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Escrow through a marketplace or independently verified service | May hold funds until delivery and an inspection period, as specified by the service’s contract. | Verify the provider and payment destination independently. Check release conditions, fees, inspection and dispute deadlines, exclusions, refund terms, and who handles a dispute. A seller-forwarded email or link is not proof that the service is genuine. |
| Direct advance bank wire to the seller | Sends money directly to the seller. | The FTC warns that wire payments to strangers for online purchases can leave buyers likely to lose the money with little or no recourse. A wire is not necessarily impossible to recover in every case, but do not assume a recall will succeed. |
| Credit card or a payment service with transaction protection | May provide a dispute process, depending on the provider’s terms and the transaction. | Check the exact rules before paying; do not assume a chargeback or buyer-protection claim will apply. Some payment types, such as a friends-and-family transfer, may be excluded from protection. |
| Check or money order | May be used in some transactions. | A bank showing funds as available does not establish that a check is genuine or finally cleared. Never refund an overpayment or send a difference to the buyer. |
For any option, establish when the seller receives the money, whether funds are held by a neutral provider, what recourse exists if the watch is missing or materially misdescribed, who is responsible for insured shipping, and which country’s law and provider rules apply.

1. Put the deal’s terms in writing
Record the agreed price, the watch’s reference and identifying details that are appropriate to share, its stated condition, included items, shipping and insurance responsibilities, inspection period, and the process for raising a dispute. This is practical recordkeeping, not a complete legal contract; local requirements vary.

2. Verify the escrow provider and instructions yourself
Use the platform’s own checkout or contact an independent escrow service through contact details you found separately. Confirm the precise beneficiary and payment instructions directly with the provider, not through an email or link supplied by the seller. The FTC advises checking an unfamiliar escrow service’s terms and contact details. Chrono24 likewise says buyers should obtain information directly from the service rather than rely on seller-forwarded emails (FTC guidance on checking unfamiliar services; Chrono24 FAQ).
3. Read the release and dispute rules before paying
Find out when the inspection clock starts, how long funds are held, what counts as a timely complaint, how to notify the provider, and whether the watch must remain in the same condition while a dispute is pending. Ask who reviews a complaint and what happens to the funds during that review.

4. Treat a refusal of verified escrow as a decision point
Do not send an advance wire to an unfamiliar seller just because the seller seems credible or says the offer is urgent. If the seller insists on a direct, hard-to-reverse transfer and refuses a verifiable alternative, walking away is the safer choice unless you have independently established trust and knowingly accept the risk. The FTC’s warning about online wire payments to strangers is available at ftc.gov.

5. Keep payment protection separate from watch inspection
Use the inspection period to compare the watch with the listing and arrange a qualified inspection if appropriate. Escrow does not itself authenticate a watch. Any checks offered by a marketplace are specific to that service; for example, Chrono24 describes checks for certain certified watches, including authenticity, functionality, included items, and serial-number comparisons against stolen-watch databases. That description does not mean every private sale includes certification or that a database check proves authenticity.

6. Save the transaction record
Keep the listing, messages, invoice, escrow terms, payment confirmation, shipping and insurance details, delivery evidence, and any inspection findings. There is no universal record-retention period established here; keep records in line with your provider’s rules and applicable local requirements.
How Chrono24’s terms illustrate the limits of escrow
Chrono24’s published Buyer Protection terms, checked October 12, 2026, describe funds held until receipt and a post-delivery inspection period. The page states up to seven days for a private-seller purchase and 14 days for a professional-dealer purchase. Its FAQ says buyers may submit a complaint within seven days for a private-seller purchase. These are Chrono24 policy details, not universal escrow standards; check the current terms for the specific transaction at Chrono24 Buyer Protection and its FAQ.

The distinction matters: Chrono24 says its 14-day return right and authenticity commitment apply to professional-dealer purchases, while its terms state that private-seller purchases do not carry a statutory return right under that policy. Escrow’s inspection window is not the same as a general return right or an authenticity guarantee. The FAQ also says the service charges a 2.5% escrow fee on the total price, including shipping, and the Buyer Protection page says payout is usually triggered within seven business days after delivery confirmation. These figures describe that provider’s terms, not market-wide rates or timelines; verify them before purchase.

If a buyer sends a check or money order for more than the agreed price and asks you to return the difference, do not send money back or release the watch based on provisional credit. The deposited payment may later be reversed, leaving you responsible for the money you returned. Contact your bank using a phone number you obtained independently and ask it to verify the payment. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s guidance, last modified May 3, 2024, is explicit: “Do not send any money to the buyer.” Read its explanation at consumerfinance.gov; the FTC also explains counterfeit-check scams at ftc.gov.

What depends on your country and provider
The FTC and CFPB guidance cited here is U.S. federal consumer information. Escrow regulation, wire-transfer recovery, card disputes, return rights, and fraud-reporting options vary by country, payment provider, and transaction. A marketplace’s policy is not a universal rule of law. Before paying, check the current contract and the rules that apply where you and the seller are located.
