Decide whether the meeting is safe enough to proceed
Before agreeing to an inspection, consider whether the location is visible and busy, whether someone can accompany you or know where you are, and whether the buyer accepts reasonable safety arrangements. You should be able to end the interaction without pressure. If any of those conditions are missing and you are uncomfortable, cancel.

Police guidance is clear that you do not owe a stranger a meeting or an explanation for changing your mind. South Australia Police says, “If you feel uncomfortable with any aspect of the sale or purchase, cancel the meet up. It’s OK to cancel! You don’t have to continue.” South Australia Police’s marketplace safety advice also recommends trusting your instincts.
Choose a visible meeting place and take support
- Meet in daylight at a busy, well-lit public location where other people are present and CCTV may be available.
- Bring a trusted person if possible. If you must meet alone, share the buyer’s details and the meeting location with someone, and arrange to check in afterward.
- Keep the meeting outside your home, and do not follow the buyer to a quieter or more isolated place.
Police-station exchange areas exist in some places, but they are not a universal service. For example, Victoria Police describes designated exchange sites outside 35 police stations in Victoria, with signage, CCTV coverage, and lighting. That is a local option, not a guarantee that one is available where you live.

If you allow an inspection, keep control of the watch
A request to inspect a watch does not by itself prove that the buyer intends to steal it. But handing over a valuable item creates an opportunity for it to be taken. Keep the watch within your control during the conversation, and do not let the buyer take it away from the agreed public meeting area. The police guidance cited here does not prescribe a watch-specific inspection technique, so no particular handling method can guarantee safety.
Hertfordshire Constabulary has reported cases in which sellers handed goods to prospective buyers for examination and the buyers ran off without paying. The force’s account concerns marketplace goods generally, not watches specifically. Hertfordshire Constabulary’s online-selling advice quotes PC Joe Watson of the Dacorum Safer Neighbourhood Team describing that pattern.

Complete the sale only after payment is confirmed
A buyer’s claim that they have sent a transfer is not confirmation that the money has reached you. Check your own bank account and retain the watch until the payment is visible there. New Zealand Police puts it plainly: “If you can’t see the money in your bank account, treat it as not being in there and retain the goods.” See New Zealand Police’s online-trading safety guidance.
Leave if the buyer changes the plan or pressures you
Do not continue if the buyer insists on a secluded location, tries to rush you into handing over the watch, or makes you feel unsafe. A buyer who will not accept a public meeting is reason enough to cancel; you do not need to establish their motive first. If you are in immediate danger, move to a safer place and contact local emergency services.

These precautions address a documented risk, not a measured rate of watch-sale theft. Police have reported marketplace incidents involving goods and mobile phones, but those reports do not establish how often watch sellers are targeted.
