For a U.S. TSA checkpoint, keep a valuable watch with you—not in checked baggage. If you take it off, secure it inside a closed personal item before you reach the screening bins, keep that item under your control as it is screened, and retrieve it promptly. TSA also says you may request private screening for yourself and your valuables.

Decide whether wearing the watch suits your trip and destination. The important safeguard is keeping control of it; wearing it is not automatically safer in every situation.

Check your insurance policy before departure. Look for how it treats watches and other valuables, any per-item limits, exclusions for unattended property, what proof of ownership is required, and how quickly a loss must be reported. Terms vary by policy and jurisdiction. For example, The AA Ireland’s July 2022 policy booklet classifies watches as valuables, but that booklet does not establish coverage under other policies: The AA Travel Valuables Policy Booklet. If your current policy leaves a gap, compare the wording of available watch or jewelry coverage rather than assuming a travel policy covers the full value.

If you take it off, secure it before the bins
Put the watch in a closed pocket or pouch inside a personal item before you reach the screening bins. Avoid leaving it loose and exposed in a tray. Keep the personal item in sight and under your control as it passes through screening, then retrieve it promptly.
This is a practical way to apply TSA’s advice to keep valuables with you, not a handling sequence TSA specifically prescribes. A compact padded watch case can separate the watch from keys or other hard objects in your bag. Ask about private screening if you prefer
TSA says you may ask an officer to screen you and your valuables in private. You can make the request at the checkpoint, but it is a request—not a guarantee of a particular screening outcome.

Follow the officer’s instructions
Do not count on a watch being allowed to remain on your wrist or on passing through a detector without further screening. TSA notes that an item generally permitted may still receive additional screening or be disallowed if it triggers an alarm or raises a security concern. For international departures and connections
TSA guidance applies to U.S. screening; it does not establish procedures at every airport or in every country. Check the current instructions for each departure and transit airport on your itinerary, especially if you expect to remove the watch during screening.
