Travel insurance may cover a watch lost or stolen during air travel, but payment is not automatic and may be limited. The policy’s baggage and valuables terms, the circumstances of the loss, and the evidence you can provide determine whether a claim is covered and how much it may pay. Check the watch-specific limits and restrictions before travelling, and report a loss promptly.
What determines whether a watch is covered?
Insurers may classify a watch as baggage, a valuable, jewellery, or another defined category. The wording in your own policy—not a general assumption that watches are covered—controls. A policy may apply a special limit to one item or to valuables as a group, even if its overall baggage benefit is higher.

Read the policy’s baggage and personal effects sections, including definitions, exclusions, claim conditions, and any schedule of benefits. The available policy wording showing watches treated as valuables is specific to that product; it does not establish a standard rule or limit across insurers. Canadian travel insurance guidance also advises checking whether travel or homeowners insurance covers items lost or stolen on a trip.

- How does the policy define a wristwatch: baggage, valuables, jewellery, or another category?
- Is there a per-item limit or a combined valuables limit, and how does either compare with the total baggage limit?
- Does the policy require a receipt, valuation, proof of purchase, proof of ownership, or a serial-number record?
- Does cover change if the watch was in checked baggage, left unattended, or stored in an overhead bin?
- Does the policy distinguish theft from accidental loss or unexplained disappearance?
- What deductible applies, and does the settlement use repair cost, replacement cost, or a depreciated value?
- Must you notify the insurer or obtain an airline or police report within a specified period?
How airline liability differs from travel insurance
Airline liability and insurance are separate routes for seeking recovery. For international air carriage covered by the Montreal Convention, the baggage liability limit is 1,519 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per passenger for destruction, loss, damage, or delay of baggage, effective 28 December 2024. The International Civil Aviation Organization’s announcement and the International Air Transport Association’s treaty overview identify the revised limit and effective date.

The 1,519 SDR figure is a liability ceiling, not a guaranteed payout or a promise to reimburse the watch’s full value. SDRs are not a fixed amount in every currency, so any currency conversion changes over time. The limit applies to qualifying airline liability; it is not a watch sublimit in your insurance policy. The Canadian Transportation Agency’s notice also lists the revised limit.
Your insurer’s obligations come from the policy you bought. You may be able to pursue both an airline claim and an insurance claim, but check the policy’s coordination and recovery terms, tell each party about the other claim, and disclose any airline payment. There is no single coordination rule established here that applies to every policy.

What to do if your watch goes missing
- Report the incident promptly. If the watch disappeared from checked or cabin baggage, contact the airline and request written incident documentation. If you believe it was stolen, report it to local police when appropriate and keep the report or report number.
- Contact your insurer. Ask which documents it needs, what notice deadline applies, and whether it requires an airline or police report before assessing the claim.
- Gather evidence. Keep your itinerary, boarding pass, baggage tags, airline correspondence, purchase receipt, valuation, serial-number record, photographs, and any evidence of where and when you last saw the watch. The Canadian Transportation Agency’s baggage guidance advises retaining baggage information, tags, and receipts or other expense documents.
- Check the airline deadline for your route. Canadian guidance says claims for damaged baggage should be made within seven days of receiving it; international delayed-baggage claims within 21 days of receipt; domestic delayed-baggage claims as soon as possible and by the deadline in the airline’s tariff; and baggage not returned within 21 days should be claimed promptly once officially considered lost. These are Canadian guidance deadlines, not universal deadlines for every route or country. The applicable law and airline terms matter.
- Keep parallel claims accurate. Describe the incident consistently and do not accept a settlement without checking how it may affect your insurance claim.
How to compare cover before flying
Compare the policy terms that affect the watch specifically, rather than relying on the headline baggage benefit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Watch or valuables per-item limit and combined valuables limit
- Total baggage limit and deductible
- Restrictions on checked baggage and unattended belongings
- Required proof of ownership and reporting documents
- Claim-notice deadlines
- Whether payment is based on replacement cost or depreciated value
If a limit or condition is unclear, ask the insurer to explain it before travel and keep the response with your policy documents. No universal watch-specific insurance limit is established; the figures and terms depend on the policy, plan version, country, and circumstances.

All communications are anonymous and encrypted, and no location data is stored on the device. Even if your item is lost, your information remains protected and cannot be accessed without your permission — not by Apple, the manufacturer, or any third party.
Reduce the chance of a loss
Keep valuable items close rather than placing them in an overhead compartment or under a seat where you cannot monitor them. Canadian travel advice notes reports of theft from carry-on baggage in overhead compartments and under seats. If your carry-on must be gate-checked, remove a separate small bag containing valuables first. A luggage tracker may help locate a misplaced bag, but it does not insure the watch, prevent theft, or guarantee recovery. The Canadian Transportation Agency suggests considering a tracker for luggage.
