To time an immersion interval, align the dive watch bezel’s zero marker with the minute hand when the interval begins. Later, read the elapsed minutes from the bezel marking where the minute hand points. The bezel tracks elapsed time only; it does not measure depth, gas supply or decompression status.
How to set and read the bezel
- At the start: Rotate the bezel until its zero marker—often a triangle—lines up with the minute hand.
- As time passes: Read the bezel graduation indicated by the minute hand. That marking shows the minutes elapsed since you aligned the marker.
For example, if the minute hand points to the bezel’s 20-minute graduation, 20 minutes have elapsed since the zero marker was set. This is a scale-reading example, not a timing test of a specific watch. Seiko and TUDOR describe this basic method in their official instructions: Seiko’s rotating-bezel instructions and TUDOR’s bezel tutorial.

Why many dive bezels turn in one direction
The Seiko and TUDOR diving-watch examples use bezels that rotate counterclockwise only. Their instructions explain that this arrangement is intended to prevent an accidental bezel turn from making elapsed time appear shorter—and therefore suggesting more time remains than actually has. Do not force a bezel clockwise against its instructions. A one-way design reduces a particular risk; it cannot guarantee that a bump will never affect a reading. Check the manual for your exact watch, since bezel operation and markings vary by model.

A bezel records elapsed minutes from the moment you set its marker. It does not independently measure depth, breathing-gas pressure or decompression status. Seiko cautions: “Use the display of the elapsed time by the rotating bezel only as a guide during diving.”

Divers Alert Network describes dive computers as monitoring information such as depth, ascent rate, bottom time and decompression status. In its discussion of computer failure, DAN identifies a simple dive watch or bottom timer, depth gauge, pressure gauge and dive tables as traditional backup equipment. Its new-diver guide also advises divers using tables to bring a depth gauge and watch. These instruments serve different purposes: a bezel is an elapsed-time guide, not a replacement for dive training, planning, a computer or the appropriate backup instruments. See DAN’s discussion of dive-computer failure, its new-diver guide and DAN’s explanation of dive-computer use.

Before relying on a watch bezel
- Read the instructions for the exact watch model; marker layout and operation can differ.
- Set the zero marker at the beginning of the interval you intend to time.
- Read elapsed minutes from the bezel graduation at the minute hand.
- Follow your dive training and plan, and use the instruments required for the dive; the bezel alone does not provide the information needed to assess dive safety.
