Read the ships against the sloping horizon to find the hour, follow the serpent’s flames for the minutes, and use the square in the window for the seconds. The ships show which end of the horizon to read; the dial does not use a conventional hour hand or numerals.
How to read the time
- Find the hour: Look at the line of ships and the angle of the horizon. The horizon marks the hours, while the ships indicate which end of the line to read. Mr Jones Watches describes this as: “The angle of this horizon marks the hours and the ships tell you which end to read.” Maker’s reading instructions.
- Read the minutes: The flames emerging from the serpent’s nostrils indicate the minutes. The product page states: “Flames emerging from a serpent’s nostrils show you the minutes.”
- Read the seconds: The small square in the middle of the window is the seconds indicator, described by the maker as the seconds hand. The product page identifies it as “a square in the middle of the window.”
Read those three cues together: ships and horizon for hours, serpent flames for minutes, and the square for seconds. The display is intentionally pictorial, so do not look for a familiar hour hand or a row of hour numerals.

Which Chaos Window edition are you looking at?
The original Chaos Window and the later Chaos Window PE (Printers Edition) share the same basic time-reading scheme, but they are distinct editions.

What the design language does—and does not—tell you
The maker’s 2017 design-process article includes playful imagery about a ship making a full revolution of the planet in 60 seconds and flames signaling how much chaos has passed or remains. Those lines convey the watch’s theme; they are not additional time-reading instructions. For reading the display, use the hour, minute, and second indicators described above.
