Find the caliber before interpreting the dial
Look for the movement or caliber number on the caseback, warranty paperwork, or documentation that came with the watch. Match that number to its official Grand Seiko specifications and instruction manual. Spring Drive is a family of movements, not one universal reserve scale or accuracy rating.

For example, a reserve indicator may be on the dial or on the caseback, depending on the caliber. Grand Seiko identifies a dial-side indicator for the 9RB1; other manuals show caseback indicators. Use the instructions for the specific watch rather than assuming where to look.

How to read the power-reserve indicator
The indicator reports how much the mainspring is wound. Grand Seiko’s 9RB2 manual describes full, half, and unwound states. The hand’s position is a guide to winding state and remaining runtime, not a universal hours scale: consult the model-specific manual before converting a position into time.

These are approximate figures from the respective Grand Seiko instruction manuals, not a scale that applies to every Spring Drive. Runtime can also vary with how many hours the watch is worn and how much the wearer moves.
Check the indicator before taking the watch off to see whether it has enough power to run until you wear it again. If the reserve is low, wind the mainspring as directed in that caliber’s manual.
How to interpret the accuracy rating
Read the accuracy figure together with its caliber and time unit. A monthly rate is not interchangeable with an annual rate, and one movement’s specification is not a rating for the entire Spring Drive range.

The figures are Grand Seiko specifications for the named calibers. In particular, the 9RB1 page states its annual accuracy figure as of April 2026. They are manufacturer ratings, not the result of an independent measurement of an individual watch.

Spring Drive is powered by a mainspring and regulated using a quartz oscillator and integrated circuit. In Grand Seiko’s 9R manual, the IC monitors the glide wheel in relation to the oscillator and uses an electromagnetic brake to control it. A smoothly sweeping seconds hand therefore does not mean the movement is regulated like a conventional balance-wheel mechanical watch.
Grand Seiko states the average rate for a watch worn on the wrist within a temperature range of 5°C to 35°C. Temperature outside that range, a nearby magnetic object, shocks, or strong vibration can affect timekeeping. Treat the published figure as a rated average under the stated conditions, not a promise of the exact rate in every environment. If the watch behaves abnormally, consult the manual’s troubleshooting guidance or an authorized service provider.
Compare Spring Drive calibers on the same terms
When comparing watches, keep these distinctions visible rather than comparing numbers in isolation:
- Accuracy and period: note the caliber and whether its rating is per month or per year.
- Power reserve: compare the approximate reserve duration, using the same winding-state reference.
- Winding type: check whether the particular movement is automatic, manual-winding, or specified otherwise.
- Indicator: confirm its location and how that caliber’s scale corresponds to winding state.
Grand Seiko’s movement specifications and the individual caliber manuals provide the relevant figures and operating instructions. The examples above are not a substitute for checking the exact movement in your watch.
