The Grand Seiko SLGB009 is rated to run within ±20 seconds per year, or approximately ±3 seconds per month. Its caliber 9RB2 combines a mainspring-powered Spring Drive mechanism with quartz-based rate control. Grand Seiko attributes the accuracy to a carefully aged oscillator, temperature compensation, a vacuum-sealed oscillator-and-IC package, manufacturing refinements, and a switch that allows rate adjustment during service. Those are the manufacturer’s explanations, not independent test results.
How accurate is the SLGB009?
Grand Seiko lists the SLGB009’s accuracy as ±20 seconds per year. The brand also gives an approximate monthly equivalent of ±3 seconds. The annual figure is the formal specification; the monthly number is a convenient way to understand its scale. Grand Seiko’s SLGB009 specifications identify the watch as an Evolution 9 Spring Drive U.F.A. model equipped with caliber 9RB2.

A rated tolerance describes the manufacturer’s specification; it does not mean every individual watch will gain or lose exactly that amount over every calendar year. The available technical material explains Grand Seiko’s design rationale but does not establish independent laboratory results or long-term performance data across owners.

The 9RB2 is not a conventional mechanical movement regulated by an escapement, nor is it an ordinary battery-powered quartz movement. Its mainspring supplies the motive power. As the spring unwinds, the Tri-Synchro Regulator uses electrical energy generated by the movement to run a quartz oscillator and integrated circuit (IC), which govern the rate. An electromagnetic brake acts on the glide wheel. The result is Spring Drive’s smooth seconds-hand motion with quartz-based rate control, as Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive explanation describes.

What Grand Seiko says improves the 9RB2’s rate stability
Aged quartz oscillator
Grand Seiko says the 9RB2’s quartz oscillator is aged for three months, a process developed for its 9RA series. The stated purpose is to stabilize the oscillator’s performance before it is used to regulate the movement. Grand Seiko’s 9RB2 technical account describes this and the other measures as part of the movement’s precision design.
Individual temperature measurement and compensation
Quartz oscillator frequency can shift with temperature. Grand Seiko says it measures each oscillator at multiple temperatures, then programs the resulting compensation data into a low-power IC. In its 2025 technical introduction, the company says the IC senses temperature 540 times per day and adjusts for temperature-related effects. This is Grand Seiko’s description of the system, not a separately verified measurement of an individual watch’s performance.

Vacuum-sealed oscillator and IC
The oscillator and IC are housed together in a vacuum package. Grand Seiko says this arrangement minimizes temperature differences and helps protect those components from external influences including humidity, static electricity, and light. In the manufacturer’s account, the package supports stable operation alongside the oscillator’s temperature compensation.

Manufacturing and component refinements
Grand Seiko also credits processing changes intended to reduce residual stress, revisions to the oscillator and other components, and a redesigned IC. These changes target small frequency variations that could accumulate into a larger time deviation.

Regulation switch for service
The 9RB2 is described by Grand Seiko as the first Spring Drive movement with a regulation switch. The company says a watchmaker can use it during after-sales service to make a precision rate adjustment if the oscillator’s properties change over long use. It is a service adjustment feature, not a user-operated control for routine time-setting.
How the U.F.A. specification compares with earlier Spring Drive figures
Grand Seiko’s historical account gives earlier Spring Drive calibers monthly accuracy specifications, while the 9RB2’s headline specification is stated annually. It also describes earlier 9RA movements as having approximately five-day power reserves. The SLGB009 is listed with an approximately 72-hour reserve. These are differences in the cited specifications and product descriptions, not evidence that the 9RB2 is more accurate in every real-world condition.

Grand Seiko calls the 9RB2 “the most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring,” explicitly dating that comparative claim to April 2025 and basing it on the company’s own research. It should be read as Grand Seiko’s attributed claim, not as an independent industry ranking.
SLGB009 model details that are easy to confuse
The SLGB009 has a 40.0 mm case diameter, 47.2 mm lug-to-lug length, and 11.7 mm thickness. Grand Seiko lists an Ever-Brilliant Steel case and bracelet, approximately 72-hour power reserve, 10-bar water resistance, and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance. It is self-winding and can also be wound manually.
