Pin links, pin-and-collar links, screw links, and proprietary systems can look similar but require different tools and procedures. If you cannot identify the fastener or verify that it is secure after reassembly, stop and ask a watchmaker or jeweler.
Identify the link system before using a tool
Check the instructions for your exact watch or bracelet before attempting an adjustment. Arrows on the links, visible pin ends, and screw heads can help identify the construction, but appearance alone is not a reliable guide. For example, Longines documents both push-pins with collars and screw-bars, while Garmin’s MARQ Aviator metal bracelet uses screw links. Seiko’s manual covers a particular link-removal system and notes that its illustration may differ slightly from the bracelet supplied, even though the connecting structure is the same.

- Push-pin or pin-and-collar: A pin is pushed out, sometimes with a separate collar that must be retained and correctly reinstalled.
- Screw link: A screw is turned with a correctly fitting screwdriver; do not treat it like a push-pin.
- Model-specific system: Follow the exact maker’s sequence and tool requirements. Do not assume a tool or direction used on another bracelet applies.
If an arrow-marked link does not move in the indicated direction, or a screw will not turn with a properly fitting tool, do not force it.

Prepare the work area and choose compatible tools
Work on a clean, stable, well-lit surface. Place a soft cloth beneath the watch to protect its finish and help catch small parts. Keep removed links, pins, collars, and any spring bars together; they may be needed to restore the bracelet’s length or complete reassembly.

Use tools specified for the bracelet, not improvised sharp objects. The maker’s examples differ: Longines lists a bracelet holder and pin pusher for the relevant pin operation, and a screwdriver for screw-bars. Withings specifies a hammer, ribbed block, and pin punch for its ScanWatch metal band. Garmin specifies a small screwdriver for the MARQ Aviator Gen 2 metal bracelet. A tool sold as a watch bracelet link removal kit is not automatically compatible with every bracelet.
Estimate the fit and plan where links will come out
Try the watch on and use the fit guidance for your model to decide whether links should be removed. Seiko’s one-finger spacing guidance applies to the bracelet system covered by its instructions; it is not a universal sizing rule. If the bracelet has clasp adjustment positions, those may provide finer fit changes after link removal.

Where the bracelet design permits, removing corresponding links from both sides of the clasp can help keep the clasp centered beneath the wrist. Garmin recommends removing an equal number from both sides for its MARQ Aviator metal bracelet. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not a rule that overrides the instructions for a different bracelet.

Remove links using the procedure for your bracelet
Arrow-marked Seiko link-removal system
- Use the included tool and position it so the pin is pushed in the direction shown by the arrows in the Seiko instructions.
- Push the pin out, then draw out the ejected pin to release the link. The spring bar may become loose, so keep track of it and the other small parts.
- Retain every removed component and link for reassembly or later resizing.
Withings ScanWatch metal folding-clasp band
- Use the specified ribbed block, hammer, and pin punch, and consult the Withings instructions for the correct setup.
- With the arrows pointing down, use the pin punch to remove the pins.
- When reinstalling pins, orient them with the arrows pointing up, as the Withings procedure specifies.
Withings warns that tampering with links that do not have arrows may damage the bracelet and will not be covered by its warranty. Its instructions offer a watchmaker as an alternative to using the specified tools.

Garmin MARQ Aviator Gen 2 screw links
Garmin’s instructions say to unscrew the links with a small screwdriver. Use a correctly fitting tool and the manual’s procedure; do not push on a screw link as if it were a pin. Garmin recommends professional adjustment for this metal bracelet.
Other pin-link bracelets
Pin-link procedures vary. Longines describes push-pins with collars and separately describes screw-bars; its guidance advises a trained Longines certified watchmaker for the push-pin operation. An Emporio Armani / Watch Station manual provides another specific example using a bracelet holder, pin pusher, and chain-nose pliers; it notes that both pins must be removed and identifies partially split pins. These are examples for the named constructions, not instructions to apply to an unidentified bracelet.

Reassemble and inspect before wearing the watch
Reinstall each pin, collar, spring bar, or screw in the correct position and orientation for the model. Check that all parts are fully seated and that no pin protrudes. Seiko’s bracelet adjustment instructions warn that a protruding pin can injure the wearer, catch on clothing, damage items, or fall out. Seiko says: “Stop using the watch immediately if a pin is protruding.”
Keep the removed links and parts in a safe place. If you cannot confirm that the bracelet is securely reassembled, do not wear it until a watchmaker or jeweler has checked it.

When to get a watchmaker or jeweler
- You cannot confidently identify whether the link uses a pin, collar, screw, or proprietary fastener.
- You do not have the correctly fitting tool or the maker recommends professional adjustment.
- A pin or screw resists movement, or the bracelet does not come apart as the model instructions describe.
- You are unsure whether every small part is present and correctly seated after reassembly.
- The bracelet has a material or construction for which the maker advises specialist handling; Longines, for example, cautions about ceramic links.
