An automatic watch is a battery-free mechanical watch that winds its mainspring as you move your wrist. It can stop if it is left unworn longer than its power reserve, and its accuracy and water resistance depend on the particular watch and how it is used. It suits someone who values mechanical timekeeping and is comfortable following model-specific winding and care instructions; it may be less suitable if you want the simplest, lowest-maintenance way to keep time.
How an automatic watch works
An automatic watch stores energy in a mainspring. As your arm moves, a weighted rotor—also called an oscillating weight—turns and winds that spring. The spring then unwinds gradually, driving the watch’s gears. A balance and escapement regulate the release of energy so the hands advance at a steady pace. The mechanical timekeeping system does not need a battery.

Automatic versus hand-wound mechanical watches
Both types use a mainspring. A hand-wound watch relies on winding at the crown; an automatic watch uses wrist motion and a rotor to wind itself. Some automatic watches also support winding at the crown, but the correct procedure varies. Check the manual for your exact model rather than assuming it can be wound the same way as another watch.

Winding and power reserve
Power reserve is how long a sufficiently wound watch can run off the wrist before it stops. It varies by movement and model. How quickly ordinary wear winds a watch also depends on how much you move, so wearing one does not guarantee it will stay fully wound.

If the watch stops
Use the model’s manual to find its restart and winding instructions. Crown positions, winding support, and recommended procedure can differ, so there is no universal number of turns to apply. Do not use vigorous shaking as a substitute for the maker’s directions.

A mechanical watch can gain or lose time, and its daily rate may change with winding state, wear, temperature, position, gravity, shocks, or magnetism. A single day’s difference is not necessarily representative. Seiko recommends considering the mean daily rate across a period of actual wear rather than judging from one day alone. Specifications are not a promise that the watch will keep exactly the same rate on your wrist. Citizen notes that published static accuracy can differ in real use; its caliber 0200 precautions describe specification-page accuracy as static accuracy at normal temperatures. If tight accuracy and minimal upkeep matter most, compare mechanical watches with quartz watches before choosing. The maker guidance cited here does not establish a current numerical comparison between the two categories. The trade-off is chiefly about what kind of timekeeping experience and upkeep you want.

Factors that can affect the rate
- Winding and wear: Seiko says sufficient winding can improve consistency. Follow your model’s winding instructions.
- Position and temperature: The watch’s rate can vary depending on how it is worn or stored and the conditions around it.
- Magnetism: Seiko advises keeping its mechanical watches away from strong magnetic fields.
- Impacts: Seiko recommends removing its mechanical watches for sports involving strong impacts.
Water resistance: check the exact model and activity
Read the rating and activity guidance for the exact watch before exposing it to water. A printed depth rating should not be treated as a universal promise that the watch is suitable for any real-world swimming or diving. Citizen distinguishes everyday water exposure, water sports, and diver’s watches; it says products classified as diver’s watches comply with ISO 6425. Tissot likewise ties professional-diving suitability to designated diver’s watches under ISO 6425 (2018). These classifications and restrictions are model-specific. Water resistance depends on the condition of the seals as well as the watch’s rating. Citizen recommends regular servicing and gasket replacement at least every two to three years to maintain water resistance. That is Citizen’s recommendation, not a universal interval for every brand. A water-resistance test and gasket condition are especially relevant for older watches or after the case has been opened. (Citizen water-resistance guidance)

Care and service
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for winding, setting, storage, environmental limits, and activities. Keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields and hard impacts where the maker advises, and arrange maintenance according to its guidance.
