Measure the gap between the inside faces of your watch’s lugs in millimeters, then choose a replacement strap of that width and with an attachment system that fits your watch. For ordinary spring bars, use a forked spring-bar tool; a compatible quick-release strap may have a lever that lets you remove it without a tool. Once installed, check that both spring-bar ends are seated and gently pull each strap half to confirm it is secure.
Measure the lug width—not the case diameter
The width you need is the inside distance between the two lugs where the strap sits. Measure that gap in millimeters and match it to the replacement strap’s stated width. Case diameter is a different measurement and does not tell you which strap width to buy. Avoid estimating by eye: even a small mismatch can prevent a proper fit. If you do not have a suitable measuring tool, check the watch’s model-specific documentation for its lug width. Do not assume the width from the case size, appearance, or a strap that merely looks close.

Confirm how the strap attaches
Lug width is only part of compatibility. Before buying a strap or trying to remove the old one, identify the attachment system. Common possibilities include standard spring bars, quick-release bars with an integrated lever, and model-specific fittings. A strap with the right width may still be incompatible if its attachment does not match the watch.

Replace a standard spring-bar strap
- Prepare a safe work surface. Lay the watch face-down on a soft, stable surface to help protect the case and crystal. Work somewhere small parts will not be easily lost. A soft surface is also recommended in this strap-changing guide.
- Check for a quick-release lever. Look at the underside of the strap beside each lug. If a compatible lever is present, slide it toward the strap’s center and lift the strap free. If there is no lever, use the forked end of a spring-bar tool.
- Remove the first strap half. Place the tool’s fork around the exposed shoulder of the spring bar. Compress the bar inward until its tip clears the lug hole, then ease that end of the strap away from the lug. Keep the tool from slipping against the case. Repeat at the other lug to remove the strap half.
- Remove the second half. Use the same method on the other side of the watch.
- Check the spring bars. Reuse the existing bars only if they are appropriate for the replacement strap and in good condition. Otherwise, use bars specified as compatible with the watch and strap. Matching the strap’s lug width does not, by itself, establish that a spring bar’s length or diameter is correct.
- Install the replacement strap. Fit one end of a spring bar into a lug hole. Compress the opposite end and guide it into the other hole. Repeat for the other strap half. Take care not to scratch the inside of the lugs while positioning the tool or bar.
- Check retention. Confirm that both ends of each bar are seated in their lug holes, then gently pull on each strap half. Breitling’s official instruction is to “CHECK THAT YOUR NEW STRAP IS SAFELY FIXED BY SLIGHTLY PULLING ON ITS TWO PARTS.”
When to stop and get model-specific help
These steps apply to common spring-bar arrangements, not every watch. Stop if the attachment is unfamiliar, the bar cannot be reached safely, or the tool seems to require force. Check the manual for your exact model or ask a watchmaker or authorized service provider, particularly if you are concerned about marking the case. Longines advises seeking certified professional help when in doubt about more involved adjustments.
