First read the battery marking on your individual Weekender’s caseback. Many current Weekender references, including Timex model TW2W86800, use a CR2016 3V lithium coin cell, but the caseback marking controls. For the common snap-back case, lift the back at its opening notch, remove the old cell, install the replacement with the same polarity, inspect the gasket, press the back down evenly, and fully depress the crown.
Timex strongly recommends having a retailer or jeweler replace the battery. Professional service is the safer choice if you care about water-resistance, lack the right tools, or see a damaged gasket or caseback.

Confirm the exact Weekender and battery first
“Timex Weekender” is a family name, not a guarantee that every reference uses the same cell. Turn the watch over and record the model number and battery marking before buying anything. Timex’s battery guidance states: “Battery type is indicated on caseback.” Treat that marking as authoritative for your watch.

Use the caseback marking
Clean loose dirt from the back so the engraving is readable, then photograph or write down the model number and battery code. Do not order a cell solely because a seller describes the watch as a Weekender. If the marking is unreadable, use the model number in Timex’s manual index or ask a jeweler to identify the movement.

Typical specification
Timex’s official product page for Weekender TW2W86800 lists a CR2016 battery. A CR2016 is a 3V lithium coin cell. That specification applies to a compatible reference; it is not permission to substitute a different coin-cell code in a watch whose caseback says something else.

Choose DIY or a jeweler
Opening a watch is simple only when the case, gasket, retaining clip, and replacement tool are all handled correctly. Timex’s 2019 instruction says: “Timex strongly recommends that a retailer or jeweler replace battery.” Follow that recommendation when preserving the seal or avoiding cosmetic damage matters.

Prepare the workspace and tools
Work on a clean, well-lit, stable surface. A soft cloth keeps the crystal and case from being dragged across a hard table while still allowing you to hold the watch securely.
- The correctly marked replacement cell, such as a CR2016 3V cell when your caseback specifies it.
- A dedicated snap-caseback opener that fits the notch. A case press is preferable for closing the back evenly.
- A small tool suitable for lifting the cell from its retaining clip without bending it.
- A clean, lint-free surface and a container for the spent battery.
A household knife can slip, scratch the case, or injure your hand. If no dedicated opener is available, a professional service is the safer choice. Never force a tool into a location that is not the caseback’s opening notch.

Step-by-step battery replacement
1. Record the original condition
Note the time shown, photograph the back, and confirm the crown is in its normal position before opening. Recording the original battery orientation is useful because the replacement must match the original polarity and the markings inside the movement.
2. Find the snap-back notch
The common Weekender case uses a snap-on back with a dedicated opening notch. Inspect the case edge for the small cutout. Place the watch crystal-side down on the soft cloth, keep the case stable, and position the opener in the notch. Protect your fingers and point any blade away from your hand and the watch.
3. Lift the caseback carefully
Apply controlled leverage at the notch rather than twisting around the entire rim. The independent Weekender demonstration identifies this notch and shows the snap back being levered off; that demonstration is practical guidance, not a Timex endorsement. Stop if the tool slips, the metal begins to deform, or the back will not release with moderate, controlled pressure. A jeweler can open it without turning a difficult back into a damaged one.

Look at the old coin cell and the movement markings. Make a second photograph if necessary. The new cell must sit in the same orientation, with its positive and negative sides matching the original installation and the movement’s indications.

5. Remove the old battery
Release the cell from its retaining clip with a suitable small tool. Lift the battery without bending the clip or scraping nearby components. Avoid touching both faces of the new cell repeatedly; hold it by its edge whenever practical. Put the spent cell in a secure container immediately rather than leaving it loose on the work surface.
6. Install the specified replacement
Fit the replacement code shown on the caseback. Seat it flat under the retaining clip, matching the polarity you recorded. Do not force a thicker or differently coded coin cell into the holder. If the battery rocks, sits high, or the clip does not engage, remove it and have the movement inspected instead of closing the watch around a poor contact.
7. Inspect the gasket
Before closing the watch, check that the gasket is present, clean, and seated in its groove. Look for pinching, flattening, cuts, dirt, or a section that has slipped out of position. The gasket is part of the seal; a battery change that leaves it displaced can reduce water-resistance even when the watch starts normally. If it is damaged or missing, stop and obtain professional service.
8. Press the caseback on evenly
Align the back so its notch and any markings return to their original position. Press down evenly with a suitable case press or another controlled method designed for watch backs. Uneven pressure can damage the seal or leave the caseback unsecured. Do not hammer the back or press directly on the crystal.

9. Restart and check the watch
Once the back is flush all around, fully depress the crown. Confirm that the hands move, set the correct time, and inspect the caseback edge for a uniform fit. If the watch remains stopped, do not keep pressing the crown or repeatedly forcing the battery. Have a jeweler check battery seating, polarity, contact pressure, and the movement.

The caseback will not open
Recheck that you have found the actual notch and are using a snap-back opener rather than trying to pry at a random point. Keep the watch stable and use controlled leverage. If the notch is damaged, the back appears screwed down, or the tool starts slipping, stop; forcing it can scratch the case or injure you. A jeweler has the correct opener and can identify whether the case design is different from the common snap-back style.
The replacement battery does not fit
Remove it and compare the code with the caseback marking. A Weekender family name is not enough to establish compatibility. Do not compress the cell, enlarge the holder, bend the clip, or substitute a different thickness. Use the model number to confirm the correct part or ask a watch professional.

The hands do not move after installation
Check only the basic, safe possibilities: the crown may still be pulled out; the cell may be upside down; the retaining clip may not contact the battery; or the battery may not be seated flat. If correcting the crown position and visually checking the seating does not restore movement, stop and have the watch inspected. Continuing to pry at the movement can create damage unrelated to the original battery.

The back is not flush
Do not wear the watch in this condition. A gasket may be out of its groove, the back may be misaligned, or the cell may be sitting too high. Remove pressure, reopen only if you have the proper tools, and arrange professional service if the source of the misfit is not obvious.
The watch runs but water-resistance is important
Normal ticking does not prove that the seal is intact. Opening the case and reseating the back can reduce water-resistance, especially if the gasket was pinched or the back was pressed unevenly. Timex’s recommendation for retailer or jeweler replacement is particularly relevant when the watch will be exposed to water or when maintaining sealing confidence matters.
Battery safety and disposal
Keep the old and new coin cells away from children and pets. Timex’s warning states: “DO NOT DISPOSE OF BATTERY IN FIRE. DO NOT RECHARGE. KEEP LOOSE BATTERIES AWAY FROM CHILDREN.” A CR2016 is a disposable cell, not a rechargeable battery. Recycle or dispose of the spent battery through the collection program required by your local rules, and do not place it in a fire or attempt to recharge it.
When professional replacement is the right answer
Choose a retailer, jeweler, or Timex service route instead of DIY if the caseback marking cannot be read, the back will not release cleanly, the gasket is damaged, the retaining clip is bent, the watch must retain water-resistance, or the watch does not run after a correctly oriented battery is installed. Professional handling also makes sense when the watch has sentimental value or visible case and crystal finishes that could be scratched by an improvised tool.
For a straightforward compatible snap-back Weekender, the essential sequence is: verify the caseback code, open at the notch, preserve the clip and gasket, install the matching cell with the original polarity, press the back evenly, depress the crown, and test the movement. If any part of that sequence feels uncertain, Timex’s own recommendation favors a retailer or jeweler.
