Rinse a suitable, properly closed water-resistant dive watch with clean fresh water after ocean exposure, then dry it with a soft cloth. The rinse removes salt and sand before they can remain on the case, bezel, bracelet, or clasp. Your watch’s manual controls the details: crown design, pusher restrictions, current water-resistance condition, and strap material can make a procedure that is safe for one model unsuitable for another.
Before any water touches the watch, secure the crown exactly as the manufacturer specifies. Do not operate crown or pusher functions in or under water unless the manual expressly allows it. If the watch has a leather, suede, fabric, or other water-sensitive strap, treat the strap separately from the water-resistant watch head.

The safe post-saltwater routine
Use this sequence immediately after a swim or dive, adapting the water-delivery method and cleaning products to the exact model manual:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the watch is safe to wet. Check for a correctly closed crown and any obvious crystal, case, crown, or pusher damage. A screw-down crown must be secured; a push-in crown must be fully returned to its normal position.
- Do not use controls while wet. Leave the crown and pushers untouched in the water. Hamilton specifically cautions against operating crown or pusher functions in or under water.
- Rinse with fresh water. Remove salt and sand with clean water. Whether that means a gentle rinse, still water in a container, or another method depends on the maker’s instructions.
- Work salt out of moving areas only as permitted. Let fresh water reach the bezel edge, bracelet links, clasp, and case surfaces without forcing water into openings or manipulating controls underwater.
- Dry gently. Use a clean, soft cloth and blot or wipe rather than rubbing aggressively.
- Clean further only if the manual permits it. Some manufacturers allow mildly soapy water and a soft brush for appropriate water-resistant cases and metal bracelets; this is not a universal instruction, especially for leather or fabric straps.
- Arrange an inspection when resistance may be compromised. A hard impact, aged gasket, loose crown, condensation, or other damage means a freshwater rinse is not a substitute for a water-resistance check.
Rolex summarizes the purpose of the rinse in its official care FAQ: “After wearing your watch in the sea, it is important to rinse it with fresh water to remove any salt and sand deposits.” That statement is specific to Rolex watches; use your own model’s manual for the final procedure.

Rolex’s care FAQ and the care pages from Hamilton, Patek Philippe, TAG Heuer, Seiko, and Audemars Piguet all direct owners toward post-seawater freshwater care for appropriate watches, while differing on the details.
Check the crown, pushers, and watch condition first
Screw-down crowns
A screw-down crown must be fully secured in the position specified by the manual before exposure to water. If it feels cross-threaded, will not tighten normally, or stops short of its usual position, do not rinse the watch as though it were ready for diving. Keep it dry and have the crown and seals assessed.
Push-in crowns
A push-in crown must be completely returned to its normal position. Do not assume that a push-in design has the same wet-use tolerance as a screw-down design; the model’s instructions and water-resistance specification govern.

Leave chronograph pushers, helium-release valves, alarm controls, and other external functions alone while the watch is wet unless the manufacturer explicitly permits operation. Hamilton’s care guidance warns against operating crown or pusher functions in or under water. A watch can be rated for water resistance and still be vulnerable if a control is opened or moved at the wrong time.
Look for reasons to stop
- A cracked crystal, dented case, loose bezel, damaged crown, or pusher that does not return normally.
- Recent impact, drop, or repair that could have disturbed a gasket or case seal.
- Condensation or visible moisture under the crystal.
- A crown that is not fully closed or feels unusually loose.
Water-resistance ratings describe a design under specified conditions, not proof that an older or damaged watch remains sealed today. Hamilton notes that aging gaskets and accidental knocks can reduce resistance, and TAG Heuer also identifies age and impact as factors.

Choose a freshwater method without creating pressure problems
Follow the model manual over generic advice
Manufacturers do not all prescribe the same way to deliver freshwater. Rolex describes rinsing after sea or beach use. Seiko’s general care FAQ says to avoid washing directly under running water and to use still water in a sink or container. Those instructions cannot be merged into a universal “hold every dive watch under the tap” rule.
If the manual is available, use its exact method. If it is not, the conservative approach is to use clean, still freshwater in a clean container or another low-pressure method that does not force water toward the crown, pushers, or case joints. Do not improvise a high-pressure spray, power washer, or forceful jet.

Use clean water at a moderate temperature. The purpose is to dissolve and carry away salt and sand, not to expose the watch to thermal shock or chemical cleaners. The cited manufacturer guidance supports fresh-water rinsing; it does not establish overnight soaking, household detergents, or other stronger treatments as general care.
How long to rinse
There is no universal manufacturer time or volume requirement in the guidance cited here. Rinse long enough to remove visible salt and grit from accessible exterior surfaces, then dry. Do not interpret the absence of a stated duration as permission to leave the watch submerged or unattended.
How to rinse the case, bezel, bracelet, and clasp
Case and bezel
Keep the crown in its closed position and let fresh water contact the exterior surfaces. If salt crystals are visible around the bezel, lugs, or caseback, allow clean water to loosen them rather than scraping with a pin, knife, toothpick, or abrasive pad. Rotate a unidirectional dive bezel only if the manual permits handling it while wet; never force a gritty bezel.

Bracelet and clasp
Salt commonly remains between bracelet links, at the clasp, and around spring-bar areas. Move the bracelet gently so fresh water can reach exposed gaps, but do not open the clasp or manipulate removable links underwater unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically allow it. After rinsing, wipe each section with a soft cloth so moisture and loosened grit are removed from the joints.
Rubber and synthetic straps
Rubber and other synthetic straps often tolerate freshwater rinsing better than leather or fabric, but the exact compound, coating, buckle, and watch model still matter. Rinse only when the manual permits it, and dry the strap and buckle completely with a soft cloth.
Dry the watch without damaging finishes or seals
Seiko instructs owners to wipe a watch dry with a soft cloth after seawater use, and TAG Heuer likewise specifies a dry soft cloth after saltwater exposure. Use a clean, lint-free cloth and gentle pressure. Blot water from the crystal, caseback, lugs, bracelet, clasp, and strap rather than polishing aggressively.
- Do not use abrasive paper, a rough towel, or a metal tool to scrape salt.
- Do not direct hot air, a heat gun, or a radiator at the watch.
- Do not treat a dry exterior as proof that no water entered the case; condensation under the crystal requires professional attention.
Pay particular attention to crevices in the clasp and between bracelet links. If the strap material must remain dry, remove or protect it according to the manual instead of assuming that drying the watch head also makes the complete watch safe.
When soap and a soft brush are appropriate
Soap and brushing are optional, model-dependent steps—not the default after every dive. Rolex describes occasional cleaning with soapy water and a soft brush for suitable cases and metal bracelets. TAG Heuer conditions washing with slightly soapy water and a soft brush on both water resistance and a correctly closed crown, and warns against water on fabric and leather straps.

A cautious optional-cleaning procedure
- Confirm that the watch’s current water resistance, crown position, case, and bracelet are suitable for the procedure.
- Separate or protect any strap that the manual says must stay dry.
- Use only the mild, slightly soapy solution specified or allowed by the manufacturer; do not substitute household degreasers, bleach, solvents, or concentrated detergent.
- Use a clean, very soft brush only on surfaces the manual identifies as washable. Avoid seals, openings, polished edges, and delicate coatings unless the instructions expressly include them.
- Remove all soap with the manufacturer-approved freshwater method.
- Dry with a soft cloth and stop if the crown, pusher, bezel, or clasp behaves abnormally.
The available guidance does not establish ultrasonic cleaning, overnight soaking, polishing compounds, or do-it-yourself gasket replacement as general saltwater care. A watchmaker should handle those decisions.
Strap material changes the care decision
| Strap or bracelet | What the guidance supports | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Metal bracelet | Freshwater rinse and soft-cloth drying are the usual post-seawater steps for a suitable water-resistant watch. Some manufacturers allow occasional soapy water and a soft brush. | Current water resistance, crown closure, bracelet finish, clasp construction, and the model manual’s cleaning limits. |
| Rubber or synthetic strap | Freshwater care may be allowed for the watch and strap when the model instructions permit it; dry the strap and buckle thoroughly. | Material-specific restrictions, coatings, buckle finish, and whether the strap is attached to a watch that remains water-resistant. |
| Leather or suede | Keep the strap dry unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise. The water-resistant watch head does not make a leather strap water-safe. | Whether the strap can be removed before rinsing and what the strap maker recommends for salt contamination. |
| Fabric or textile | Do not expose it to water when the model guidance forbids washing; TAG Heuer specifically cautions against water on fabric and leather straps. | Exact textile, lining, treatment, and replacement or cleaning instructions. |
Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet also provide model-dependent care recommendations, reinforcing that strap and construction details must be checked rather than generalized from a different watch.
Decide whether the watch needs a water-resistance inspection
Arrange prompt professional assessment after an impact
A knock against a boat, tank, rock, or pool edge can affect a gasket or case component even when no damage is obvious. Hamilton and TAG Heuer both identify impacts and aging as reasons water resistance can decline. If the watch was struck, the crown was pulled out, or moisture appears under the crystal, keep it out of water and contact an authorized service center or official retailer.
Use the maker’s interval, not a universal schedule
Service recommendations differ by brand. Hamilton’s undated care page recommends an annual check, while TAG Heuer’s undated water-resistance FAQ recommends checks every two years for regular water exposure. These are brand recommendations, not a population statistic or a universal rule. Follow the interval in your own manual and shorten it when the watch has suffered an impact or shows symptoms.
| Source | Published recommendation in the cited guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Hamilton | Annual check on its watch-care page. | Use for Hamilton watches as that brand’s recommendation; do not transfer it automatically to another brand. |
| TAG Heuer | Check every two years for regular water exposure. | Use for TAG Heuer watches as that brand’s recommendation; inspect sooner after impact or suspected damage. |
| Other brands | Interval not established here as a universal number. | Use the exact model manual or an authorized service center’s advice. |
Rinse at home or stop and seek service?
| Situation | Best next step | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Known-good water-resistant watch, crown correctly closed, no impact, compatible bracelet or strap | Follow the model’s freshwater-rinse and soft-cloth-drying instructions. | This matches the common manufacturer recommendation for removing salt and sand. |
| Manual says still water, or running water is not expressly permitted | Use clean still water in a container or the exact method in the manual. | Seiko cautions against direct running-water washing in its general FAQ. |
| Leather or fabric strap attached | Keep the strap dry or remove it only as the manufacturer permits; clean the watch head separately. | Strap restrictions can be stricter than case restrictions. |
| Recent impact, loose crown, cracked crystal, condensation, or uncertain closure | Do not rinse or submerge; arrange an inspection. | Water resistance may already be compromised. |
| Salt remains after the approved rinse | Repeat only the manual-approved rinse or cleaning step; do not scrape, soak overnight, or use aggressive chemicals. | The cited guidance does not support improvised stronger treatments. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Holding every watch under a running tap
Correction: check the manual first. Seiko’s general guidance favors still water in a sink or container, while other brands describe rinsing. Water pressure and construction differ.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Opening the crown to “let water in and out”
Correction: never open the crown for cleaning. A crown that is not correctly closed is a reason to keep the watch dry and seek advice.
Pressing chronograph or other pushers underwater
Correction: leave all controls alone unless the model instructions explicitly permit wet operation.
Washing a leather strap because the case is water-resistant
Correction: treat the strap material independently. Leather, suede, and some textiles may need to remain dry.
Using soap, a brush, or a spray without checking the model
Correction: reserve optional cleaning for watches and bracelets whose manuals allow it. Mild soap and a soft brush are not universal.
Assuming a water-resistance rating never expires
Correction: account for gasket aging, impacts, and service recommendations. A rating is not a condition report for a particular watch today.
Manufacturer guidance at a glance

A practical checklist for your next dive
- Read the exact model manual before the first saltwater outing.
- Confirm the crown is in its specified closed position.
- Know whether pushers may be operated wet; if the manual does not explicitly permit it, do not operate them.
- Identify whether the strap is metal, rubber, leather, fabric, suede, or another material with separate restrictions.
- After exposure, use the manufacturer-approved fresh-water method to remove salt and sand.
- Dry with a soft cloth, paying attention to links, clasp, lugs, and strap surfaces.
- Use soap or a soft brush only where the manual allows them.
- Keep the watch dry and arrange inspection after impact, suspected seal damage, loose controls, or condensation.
- Follow the brand’s stated inspection interval rather than treating any one interval as universal.
The central rule is simple but conditional: freshwater removes salt and sand from a suitable water-resistant watch, yet the correct rinse, cleaning level, strap treatment, and service timing belong to the watch’s own construction and instructions.
