In the cited Chaumet manual, you pull the crown fully to position 2, turn the hands clockwise to the target time, then push the crown back to position 1. After setting, check both the hour display and the minutes against a reliable reference.
Identify the watch and its controls first
Check the brand, model or caliber, and the watch’s manual before turning the crown. “Jump hour” describes an hour display that changes in steps, but it does not guarantee that every watch uses the same crown positions or setting method. The instructions below are examples for the particular manuals cited, not universal directions.

Read both parts of the display
Find the jumping-hour display, often an aperture, and the minute hand or minute indication. On the Baume & Mercier manual page reproduced by ManualsLib, the hour is read in the aperture while the minute hand is advanced to the intended minute. Use your own watch’s manual to confirm how its display is meant to be read.
Set the time using your model’s instructions
Chaumet self-winding mechanical watch with jumping hour
Chaumet’s 2019 English manual describes position 1 as the normal position and manual-winding position, and position 2 as the time-setting position. Its procedure is:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.316L Stainless Steel Case/Screw Crown/Steel Closed Caseback
- 2. Seagull ST1721 Jump Hour Mechanical Movement
- 3. Sapphire Crystal / Diameter: 34.5MM / Case Thickness : 10.4MM / Lug to Lug =45MM
- 4.Comfortable Rubber Strap /5.Butterfly Clasp
- 5.Band Width: 20MM*18
- Pull the crown fully out to position 2.
- Turn the hands clockwise until they show the desired time.
- Push the crown back against the case to position 1.
This is the procedure for the watch covered by that manual; do not assume another jump-hour watch has the same positions or operation. Chaumet’s 2019 watch manual (PDF).
Baume & Mercier manual procedure reproduced by ManualsLib
The page titled “SETTING THE TIME WITH JUMPING HOUR FUNCTION” instructs the wearer to pull the crown to position 2, advance the minute hand clockwise until the desired hour appears in the aperture, then continue to the desired minute. It says to reset the crown when the reference time begins. The model and manual publication date are not established on the transcription page, so treat this as guidance only for a watch whose own manual matches it. Check the displayed time
Once the crown is returned as directed by the watch’s manual, compare the hour and minute indications with a reliable reference clock. The Baume & Mercier instructions recommend synchronizing the crown return with the start of the reference time. Check that the hour shown in the aperture and the minutes both match the intended setting.
Check AM or PM only as the manual specifies
If your watch has a date display, its date change may help distinguish midnight from noon, but the behavior is model-specific. The Baume & Mercier instructions reproduced by ManualsLib say that, on the described watch, a date change as the hands pass 12 indicates midnight; no date change indicates noon. The same manual warns against using its rapid date-change function between 8 pm and 2 am. That interval concerns the manual’s rapid date-change function; do not apply it to another watch or treat it as a general restriction on ordinary time-setting.

Stop if the controls do not match
- If your crown positions differ from the example, follow the instructions for your model rather than trying the procedure by guesswork.
- If the hour does not advance as expected, or the watch has a separate quick-set or date control, consult its manual before proceeding.
- If the crown resists movement, do not force it. Contact a qualified watch service provider if the manual does not resolve the issue.
