To set and use a mechanical alarm watch, first identify its exact brand and reference, then follow that model’s manual. Alarm watches do not share one universal procedure: the controls, winding direction, alarm-time display, and way to start or stop the alarm can vary.
Identify your watch before using the alarm
Find the brand and reference number engraved on the watch or its paperwork. Use that information to locate the instructions for your exact model. Jaeger-LeCoultre, for example, provides a manual lookup where owners can enter an engraved or product reference: Jaeger-LeCoultre’s official user-manual lookup.

Before turning a crown or pressing a control, check the manual for which control sets the time, which winds or sets the alarm, and how the alarm is activated and stopped. Do not assume that a watch has two crowns, a shared alarm display, or the same winding direction as another model.

How the controls can differ
Mechanical alarm watches generally require separate operations for the time and alarm, but their layouts and procedures differ. These manufacturer-documented examples illustrate why the exact reference matters; they are not interchangeable instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- LOUD ALARM- Easy to set loud and clear alarm with progressive interval ring

Vulcain Cricket
Vulcain’s instructions describe using the crown and button to wind and set the Cricket’s watch movement and alarm mechanism. In the instructions shown, the winder is pushed in and turned toward “6” to wind the watch, and pushed in and turned toward “12” to wind the alarm. The page also distinguishes setting the time from setting the alarm, but its available instructions do not show the complete alarm-setting sequence. Consult Vulcain’s full instruction page for the steps for your Cricket rather than inferring the missing sequence.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox
The current Master Control Memovox Q411843J product information identifies the crown at 2 o’clock as the control for setting the alarm and date, and the crown at 4 o’clock as the control for winding the movement and setting the time.

A reproduced manual for a Master Memovox describes a more specific sequence: crown A in position 1 winds the alarm clockwise until it is fully wound; to set the alarm, pull crown A to position 2 and turn it anti-clockwise until the triangular marker faces the desired alarm time, then return the crown to position 1. That manual says the alarm is activated in position 1 and stopped in position 2. These steps apply to the documented model only; check the manual for your own reference. The reproduction is available at ManualsLib’s Master Memovox manual section, “Using the Master Memovox”.

Set, activate, and stop the alarm safely
- Confirm the reference. Match the watch’s engraved or product reference to the manufacturer’s manual.
- Identify each control. Use the manual to distinguish the time-setting and winding control from the alarm-setting control. Do not rely on crown position or direction from another model.
- Set the alarm as instructed. Follow the model-specific sequence and display method. For example, the reproduced Master Memovox manual uses a triangular marker; that is not a universal alarm display.
- Check the activation state. Confirm in the manual which crown position, pusher, or other control arms the alarm. Setting an alarm time and activating the alarm may be separate actions.
- Stop it using the specified control. Follow the manual’s stop procedure rather than experimenting with crowns or pushers while the alarm is sounding.
If the manual for your reference is unavailable or the controls do not match its diagrams, stop and ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for model-specific guidance.
