What Do Unusual Watch Complications Actually Do? A Guide to Displays and Functions

A practical guide to unusual watch complications: what they measure or display, how calendar types differ, and why a tourbillon is not an extra indication.

Unusual watch complications add an indication or function beyond ordinary timekeeping—but they do very different jobs. A chronograph measures elapsed time; a calendar tracks dates; a moon-phase display represents the moon’s illuminated appearance; and a minute repeater sounds the time. A tourbillon is the important exception: it is a regulating mechanism, not an extra display, though some horological definitions count it as a complication.

What makes a watch function a complication?

In common usage, a complication is a function beyond displaying hours, minutes and seconds. It might provide extra information, such as the date or a second time zone, or let the wearer do something, such as measure an interval or hear the time. Definitions differ at the edges: some horological authorities include mechanisms such as the tourbillon even though they do not add information to the dial.

The useful question is not whether a function sounds exotic, but what it tells you or lets you do—and how much attention it needs.

Which complications measure time?

Chronograph: time an interval

A chronograph is a stopwatch function built into a watch. It measures elapsed time while the watch continues to display the current time. Depending on the watch and how the measurement is used, a chronograph can help determine speed, distance using light and sound, or pulse. Those are calculations based on timing, not necessarily additional measurements made by the watch itself. Patek Philippe’s chronograph explanation describes these examples.

Flyback: restart timing in one press

A flyback chronograph lets the wearer stop, reset and start timing again with a single press. That is useful for successive intervals, where separately stopping, resetting and restarting a standard chronograph would take more actions. The exact controls and operation depend on the watch. Breguet’s chronograph glossary describes the flyback function.

Split-seconds: time more than one event

Split-seconds chronographs are another chronograph type, but the label alone is not enough to explain how a particular model operates. Check the maker’s instructions for the specific watch before relying on its controls or readings.

How do calendar complications differ?

Simple date and calendar displays

A date display shows the day of the month. More elaborate calendars may also indicate the day of the week and the month. A basic calendar generally needs correction after months shorter than 31 days, because the mechanism cannot automatically account for every month’s length.

Annual calendar

An annual calendar automatically accommodates different month lengths, but it still needs a correction once a year. For example, Patek Philippe says its 4946R-001 displays the day and month by hands, the date in an aperture and the moon phase; its product page specifies one annual-calendar correction per year. That describes this model, not every watch carrying an annual calendar. Patek Philippe 4946R-001.

Perpetual calendar

A perpetual calendar also accounts for leap years, so its calendar mechanism can handle the usual month lengths and leap-year cycle without the annual correction required by an annual calendar. The distinction between calendar types is chiefly how much manual correction they require, not how many indicators appear on the dial.

What does a moon-phase display show?

A moon-phase indication represents the portion of the moon illuminated by the sun as seen from Earth. A common design uses a rotating disc bearing moon images, viewed through an aperture. It shows the lunar phase; it is not a measurement of the moon’s position in the sky.

One technical glossary gives the lunar cycle as 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds. Many conventional mechanisms approximate it as 29.5 days, so their displays drift and need periodic correction. More accurate mechanisms exist, so the correction interval depends on the watch; do not assume every moon-phase display follows the same schedule. Hodinkee’s moon-phase glossary explains the display and the common approximation.

What does a power-reserve indicator tell you?

A mechanical watch runs as its mainspring unwinds. A power-reserve indicator shows how much running time remains—or, on some designs, the winding state—often using a hand on an arc or a linear scale. It gives the wearer a cue to wind the watch before it stops. The indicated reserve is specific to the watch and its movement; it is not a universal running-time figure. Hodinkee’s power-reserve glossary describes the function.

What do travel and astronomical indications do?

Dual time and world time

A dual-time display lets the wearer read the time in another location alongside local time. A world-time indication is intended to show times across multiple locations or time zones. The layout and setting method vary by watch, so consult the model’s instructions to understand which city or time zone each indication represents.

Equation of time and sunrise or sunset

Equation-of-time indications relate clock time to apparent solar time, which does not match civil clock time exactly throughout the year. Sunrise and sunset displays indicate those events for a relevant location or setting. These functions connect the watch to solar motion; they are not substitutes for a general-purpose time-zone display.

How does a minute repeater work?

A minute repeater makes the time audible on demand. In the mechanism described by Blancpain, hammers strike two gongs to sound the hours, then quarters, then minutes. The listener interprets the sequence of sounds to determine the indicated time. It is a way to hear the time, not simply an alarm that rings at a preset moment. Blancpain’s minute-repeater explanation describes the hammer-and-gong arrangement; Breguet’s glossary also describes the function.

What are jumping hours, retrograde hands and other unusual displays?

Some complications change how time or other information is presented rather than adding a familiar extra dial. A jumping-hours display shows the hour as a numeral that changes at the hour, instead of with a conventional hour hand. A retrograde hand travels along an arc and returns to its starting point when it reaches the end. Alarms provide a sound at a set time; day/night indicators distinguish those portions of the day; depth gauges indicate depth on watches designed for that purpose. These labels describe different functions, so the specific watch’s instructions are the best guide to what its indication measures and how to read it. Patek Philippe’s complications overview lists a range of such functions.

Is a tourbillon a complication?

A tourbillon rotates the balance, balance spring and escapement through vertical positions in succession, with the aim of averaging their rate across those positions. It is a regulating device, not an indication that tells the wearer additional information.

Whether it counts as a complication depends on the definition. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie definition reproduced by Hodinkee includes the tourbillon and self-winding system, while a narrower generic definition reserves “complication” for added functions or information. Hodinkee’s explanation of complications sets out that distinction.

How should you compare complications?

  • Function: Identify exactly what the watch measures, indicates or does. A chronograph times an interval; it does not automatically calculate speed or distance for you.
  • Correction and setting: Check whether the calendar needs monthly or annual adjustment, whether the moon phase needs periodic correction, and how the maker says to set the function.
  • Readability: Look at the particular dial. The number of functions does not establish whether their indications are easy to distinguish at a glance.
  • Use: Consider whether you will regularly use the information or interaction. A function is only practically useful if it fits the wearer’s needs.
