How to Set a Maximum Bid for a Watch at Auction

Start with the most you can spend in total to own the watch, then work backward. Subtract the buyer’s premium, applicable taxes or duties, shipping and insurance, other sale charges, and a reserve for immediate service or restoration. What remains is your maximum hammer bid. Set that ceiling before bidding and stick to it.

There is no universal bid limit: fees, taxes, condition, and bidding rules depend on the specific auction and your circumstances. Check the lot page and current sale terms before you enter a bid.

Calculate the maximum hammer bid from your all-in budget

The hammer price is the winning bid, not necessarily the amount you pay. Auction houses may add a buyer’s premium, and taxes, duties, shipping, insurance, or other charges may also apply. Christie’s describes the total as the hammer price plus the premium and applicable taxes or shipping, and notes potential duties and import costs in its buyer’s guide.

Let B be your all-in spending limit, H the hammer bid, P(H) the buyer’s premium and any applicable overhead premium, T(H) taxes or duties, and C the remaining costs, including shipping, insurance, handling, and the service allowance. Your ceiling should satisfy:

Use the fee schedule for the particular sale. A premium may be tiered, and taxes may apply to the premium or other parts of the transaction, so do not assume that one flat percentage applies unless the sale terms say so. Use the auction’s calculator if available.

Fill in the costs before setting your ceiling

  • All-in amount you are willing and able to spend
  • Buyer’s premium calculated from the actual sale schedule
  • Any other applicable premium
  • Tax, VAT, or import duty for your buyer and delivery circumstances
  • Shipping, insurance, collection, payment, and handling charges
  • Allowance for immediate service or restoration

After accounting for those costs, the remainder is the maximum hammer bid. If you cannot determine a material charge, get clarification or leave enough room in your budget to cover the uncertainty.

Do not use the estimate as your budget

An auction estimate is a guide, not a guaranteed value or an all-in cost. Sotheby’s says estimates may be revised and a lot can sell above or below them; its buyer guidance also notes that estimates exclude certain premiums and charges. Check the estimate and the applicable fees separately in the current Sotheby’s buyer guide.

For a sense of market value, compare several realized sales of genuinely similar watches. Match the reference where possible, and account for condition, completeness, and service position. A damaged, unusually complete, or exceptionally documented example may not be representative of a standard example; avoid letting a single outlier set your ceiling. Check whether quoted results include the buyer’s premium before comparing them with a hammer bid.

Account for the watch’s condition and service risk

Condition uncertainty changes the effective cost of ownership. Read the catalogue entry, sale notices, terms, and available condition report, then ask the auction house for further details or movement images if those details matter and are available.

Sotheby’s Guide for Buyers | Global says: “All lots are offered for sale ‘AS IS’ and in the condition which they are in at the time of sale.” It also warns that a missing condition reference does not mean a lot is in good condition, working order, or free from faults, imperfections, restoration, or repair. A condition report is not a guarantee of working order or a complete account of every issue.

Questions to resolve before choosing a ceiling

  • Is the watch the stated reference, and do available serial details support that identification?
  • Are the dial, hands, case, and movement original, or are any replacements or modifications disclosed?
  • Is there visible wear, damage, or evidence of polishing that affects your assessment?
  • Does the watch run, and what exactly does the catalogue or report say about its function?
  • Are service records credible and relevant? Are the papers, box, or accessories shown actually included?
  • Are movement images and other details available to assess the aspects that matter to you?
  • What might it cost to bring the watch to the condition you are willing to own?

Inspect in person where possible, or arrange a qualified review if the likely cost of a problem matters to your decision. Gardiner Houlgate says it provides condition reports when practical but that buyers must satisfy themselves about a lot’s condition in its auction buying guidance. For complicated watches or uncertain service needs, consider an authorized service center or qualified specialist. Include a realistic service or restoration reserve in C; if the exposure is too uncertain, lower the hammer ceiling or do not bid.

Know what a maximum bid authorizes

A maximum or absentee bid generally lets the auction house or platform bid on your behalf up to a stated limit, often using the sale’s increments. It is usually a limit on the hammer bid, not the total amount after fees. Dorotheum explains that a top limit authorizes bidding up to that amount and that the bidder may win below it if no higher bid is needed in its buying guidance. Phillips likewise describes absentee bids up to a submitted maximum and says its bid amount excludes premium and applicable sales tax in its bidding guidance.

Before submitting, check the specific platform’s rules:

  • Does the bid field ask for a hammer amount or an all-in amount?
  • What increments apply, and how does the auction handle a limit that falls between increments?
  • Can a submitted bid be changed or withdrawn, and until when?
  • How are outbid notifications delivered?
  • For an online timed sale, can late bids extend the closing time?

These mechanics are sale- and platform-specific. Also check the reserve, payment deadline, shipping and export arrangements, and remedies or authenticity language in the actual terms; do not assume a return right or warranty.

Use a sale-specific fee schedule, not a market-wide rule

Buyer’s premiums differ among auction houses and can vary by sale site or value tier. For example, Christie’s published schedule effective 1 September 2025 lists 27%, 22%, and 15% tiers, with thresholds varying by sale site and local sales taxes excluded. Those are Christie’s schedule figures, not general watch-auction rates. Check the current schedule and terms for the specific sale before calculating your limit: Christie’s buyer’s guide.

Set the walk-away point before bidding

Write down your all-in budget, calculate the maximum hammer bid using the sale’s actual charges, and keep that number visible when bidding. If competition passes it, let the watch go. An estimate, an earlier bid, or the feeling that one more increment is small does not change your total budget.

If you are choosing between watches, compare each on the same basis: all-in cost, condition and likely service exposure, the quality of comparable sales, and the auction’s mechanics and terms. A lower hammer price is not automatically the better purchase if it comes with greater uncertainty or higher likely costs.
