To set a perpetual calendar watch safely, identify its exact reference and follow that model’s current manufacturer instructions for the setting sequence, controls, and restricted adjustment hours. There is no universal procedure: the cited Patek Philippe and IWC manuals specify different safe windows and methods. If a control feels stuck or the calendar indications become unsynchronized, stop rather than force or repeatedly adjust the mechanism.
Before setting the watch
- Identify the exact reference. Check the case documentation or manufacturer records for the model and, if available, caliber. Similar watches from the same maker may use different setting controls or instructions.
- Get the matching manual. Confirm that it applies to your reference and movement. Use its crown positions, correction order, directions, and restricted hours—not a sequence borrowed from another watch.
- Check the watch and controls. Do not operate the crown or correctors while the watch is wet or underwater. If a crown, pusher, or calendar indication feels stuck, irregular, or unusually resistant, stop instead of forcing it. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations advise against operating controls when wet or underwater.
Why the safe setting window matters
Calendar mechanisms may be engaged as the watch approaches midnight. Adjusting them during a manufacturer-specified restricted interval can interfere with their operation, so use the hours in your own manual.

These are examples for the named references, not universal hours for perpetual calendars. Do not apply either window to a different model without checking its manual.
Use the controls and sequence specified for your reference
Patek Philippe Ref. 5204: handle the crown gently
The Ref. 5204 manual instructs owners to remove the watch from the wrist to avoid lateral pressure on the winding stem. It recommends pulling the crown with fingernails and turning it gently between two fingertips. Before calendar corrections, its procedure calls for setting the watch to 6 a.m. and checking that the day/night indicator is white. Follow the full manual for the exact correction steps; do not infer them from instructions for another Patek model.

IWC Portugieser: advance slowly and do not overshoot
The cited IWC Reference 5034 manual says not to adjust the calendar from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. It warns that turning the crown too quickly during calendar setting can cause a faulty advance and desynchronize indications such as the date, day, and moon phase. If that happens, IWC says the movement needs to be reset by an IWC watchmaker. The manual also says not to move the calendar past the correct date and recommends a watchmaker for larger maladjustments.

An IWC sequence that applies only when the exact manual matches
A separate IWC Portugieser manual describes this sequence for the model it covers: wind the movement; pull the crown to position 2 and move the hands forward to about 4:40 a.m.; advance the calendar slowly to yesterday’s date; then move the hands forward through midnight until the calendar changes to today, and set the current time. Corrector buttons and special tools
Some perpetual calendars use corrector buttons; others use crown-operated adjustments or a combination. Do not assume a generic tool will fit, or that your watch has pushers. For its Sky Moon Tourbillon Ref. 5002 and Ref. 6002, Patek Philippe specifies using the setting stylus supplied with the watch for corrector-button adjustments. When to stop and seek a watchmaker
- A control or indication feels stuck, unusually resistant, or irregular.
- The calendar advances incorrectly or its displays no longer agree. For the cited IWC procedure, the manufacturer specifies resetting by an IWC watchmaker after desynchronization caused by rapid adjustment.
- The watch is substantially mis-set and the manual recommends professional correction.
- You cannot confirm the correct sequence, adjustment window, crown position, or tool for your reference.
Do not try to correct a suspected fault by repeatedly advancing the calendar or reversing steps from another model’s instructions. Restore the crown to its normal position as the manual directs; if it is a screw-down crown, follow the maker’s instructions for securing it.

Perpetual calendars are designed to account for month lengths and leap years, but the details depend on the movement. Patek Philippe’s Ref. 5204 manual says that, if the watch is wound daily, its calendar will not need manual correction before February 28, 2100, when the Gregorian calendar omits February 29 because 2100 is a secular year.
