Identify the display type, read the light and dark portions as a phase guide, then check the manual before deciding which side should match your view of the sky or adjusting the indicator.
What a moon-phase display shows
The Moon’s visible illumination changes through a repeating cycle. A watch translates that cycle into a small dial display: traditionally, a rotating disc moves behind an aperture so that different parts of its moon image appear. Other watches use pointers, phase labels, or a digital indicator instead. The arrangement is not standardized across watches.

For example, a conventional aperture reveals a changing portion of a lunar disc, while TAG Heuer’s Carrera Astronomer shows the full disc and uses twin arrows to indicate a labeled phase on an arc. How to identify the phase
Read the display as a sequence of changing illumination, not as a precise miniature photograph of the Moon. The four principal phases are new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter. Crescent and gibbous phases occur between them.

- New moon: The Moon’s visible face is mostly dark.
- Waxing crescent: A small illuminated crescent is growing.
- First quarter: About half of the visible face is illuminated.
- Waxing gibbous: More than half is illuminated, and the bright portion continues to grow.
- Full moon: The visible face appears fully illuminated.
- Waning gibbous: More than half remains illuminated, but the bright portion is shrinking.
- Last quarter: About half is illuminated again, now on the waning side of the cycle.
- Waning crescent: A small illuminated crescent is shrinking before the next new moon.
Waxing means the illuminated appearance is growing; waning means it is shrinking. On a labeled display, use the labels or pointer positions. On a traditional aperture, compare how much of the moon image is visible and whether the displayed lighted portion is growing or diminishing as the disc advances.
Which side is illuminated—and why it can look backwards
On a watch that distinguishes light and dark areas, the light portion represents the illuminated part for the indicated phase. That does not mean the light must always appear on the same side of every dial. A drawing can look reversed compared with the Moon in your sky without the watch being faulty.

Casio’s Operation Guide 2463 describes its indicator as a view from the Northern Hemisphere looking south at noon, and notes that the left-right appearance reverses in the Southern Hemisphere or near the equator. This is a qualification for that model, not a rule that should be applied to every watch. Casio Operation Guide 2463.
- Check the exact model’s manual for how its indicator is oriented.
- Look for a hemisphere setting if the watch offers one, and follow the model’s instructions.
- Do not assume that a light shape on the left or right is universally correct.
How accurate is the display?
Moon-phase indicators are useful phase guides, but their precision and presentation vary by model. Casio says the forms shown for module 3515 are approximate and indicate which side is darkened rather than the exact observed shape; its diagrams are described as views facing south in the Northern Hemisphere. That module also gives phase-age bands for its own indicator: new moon at 0.0–0.9 and 28.7–29.8 days; first quarter at 6.5–8.3 days; full moon at 13.9–15.7 days; and last quarter at 21.3–23.1 days. These are module-specific ranges, not universal thresholds for all watches.
Casio’s older module 2463 manual describes a 29.53-day lunar cycle and says its calculation is based on noon, with a possible error of about one day. That stated limitation applies to the module’s calculation; it should not be assumed to describe other watches. Casio Operation Guide 2463.

How to set a moon-phase display
Use the manual for your exact watch. Correctors, crowns, buttons, and setting sequences differ, and a procedure that applies to one model may not apply to another.

Patek Philippe publishes one example of a setting method for its watches: bring the display to a centered full moon, count the days since the last full moon—including the day you set it—and press the corrector that number of times.
