To set a Sky-Dweller to a new local time, unscrew the crown, pull it to the first notch, rotate the Ring Command bezel to position II, and turn the crown to move the central hour hand in one-hour increments. The minutes and off-centre 24-hour reference-time display stay unchanged. The Sky-Dweller tracks time across zones; it is not a flight or navigation instrument.
What the Sky-Dweller shows
The central hands display local time. The off-centre 24-hour disc displays reference time, so you can see whether it is day or night in that reference zone. For a trip, the quick adjustment is to move the local hour hand while leaving the reference display and minutes alone.
The bezel-and-crown control is called Ring Command: the bezel selects which function the crown adjusts. Rolex’s Sky-Dweller overview describes the model and its functions; the current official setting guide is available through Rolex’s user-guide index. Check the guide for your own reference, particularly if your watch is an older model.
How to set local time after a flight
- Unscrew the crown and pull it out to the first notch.
- Turn the bezel to position II, the local-time setting. Rolex describes the Ring Command positions as I for calendar, II for local time, and III for reference time.
- Turn the crown forward or backward to move the central hour hand in one-hour steps. The minute hand and 24-hour reference display do not move.
- Check the date if you crossed midnight. It follows local time and changes as the local hour hand passes midnight clockwise. To distinguish noon from midnight, move the hour hand to 12 and see whether the date changes.
- Return the bezel to neutral by turning it clockwise as far as it goes. Push in the crown and screw it down.
How to reset all displays
If the watch needs a complete setup rather than a destination-time adjustment, Rolex’s guide specifies this order: reference time, local time, then month and date. Setting reference time also moves the local hour hand, which is why it comes first.

1. Set reference time at position III
Unscrew the crown and pull it to the first notch. Turn the bezel counterclockwise as far as it goes to position III; the seconds hand stops. Use the crown to set the hour on the 24-hour disc and the minutes with the central minute hand.
2. Set local time at position II
Turn the bezel to position II. Use the crown to move the local hour hand in one-hour increments to the desired hour. The 24-hour disc and minute hand remain stationary.

3. Set month and date at position I
Turn the bezel to position I and use the crown to cycle the calendar until the current month is indicated, then set the date. The month appears in one of 12 apertures around the dial: January at 1 o’clock and December at 12 o’clock.
4. Return the controls to their normal position
Turn the bezel clockwise as far as it goes to neutral, push the crown in, and screw it down. Rolex says never to unscrew the crown underwater.

What the annual calendar does—and does not—do
The Saros annual calendar distinguishes 30-day and 31-day months automatically. It does not account for February’s 28 or 29 days, so it requires a correction on 1 March. It is an annual calendar, not a perpetual calendar.
