To set a moonphase watch, identify its exact model and movement, then follow that watch’s manual. A common method is to align the display with a known full moon and advance it by the elapsed days since then—but the correct control, counting convention and safety precautions vary by watch. Don’t assume another model’s instructions apply.
Before you adjust the watch
Find the brand, model or reference number, and movement if available. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact watch; the manual supplied with it is a good starting point. A moonphase may be adjusted with a crown, a dedicated pusher or a recessed corrector, and the right control and procedure depend on the model.

- Read the manual’s warnings before operating any calendar control. Some watches specify when their calendar mechanism should not be adjusted.
- Use only the control and tool specified by the manufacturer. Do not force a crown or pusher, or assume a generic tool is suitable.
- Find a reliable calendar date for the last full moon. Patek Philippe provides a full moon calendar with its general moonphase setting guidance; check the calendar for the date you need.
How to set a moonphase display
The following is a general pattern, not a universal procedure. Use it only if it matches your watch’s manual.

Confirm which crown position or corrector operates the moon display, the direction to move it, any timing restrictions, and how the manual counts elapsed days.
- Align the display to a full moon. Advance the lunar disk until the full moon is centered in the aperture, unless the manual gives a different alignment index or method.
- Count the elapsed days. Starting from the reference full moon, calculate the number of days to the date you are setting. Follow the exact manual’s rule on whether the setting day counts.
- Advance the moon display. Use the specified control to move the display by the required number of days. Some correctors advance one day per press; other mechanisms work differently.
- Set linked indications and finish. If the manual requires a particular order for the date, time or other calendar indications, follow it. Return the crown to its normal position as directed.
Why the procedure differs by watch
Manufacturer instructions show why there is no safe universal rule for the control, direction, timing or day count.

| Watch or instructions | Documented procedure detail |
|---|---|
| Patek Philippe general guidance | Centers the moon disk at full moon, then uses the corrector for elapsed days. Its general page says to include the setting day. |
| Patek Philippe caliber 324 S QA LU 24H | A dedicated pusher advances the moon disk one day per actuation. The manual says the mechanism is active between 9 and 11 a.m. and says to exclude the correction day from the count. Confirm this is the manual for your exact movement. |
| Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Caliber 7138 | Specifies crown position B′, turning counterclockwise to a full moon, then advancing the moon one jump for each elapsed day. |
| STOWA | Its instructions say to set the moon phase with the crown in position 2, after setting the time and date. |
| Hublot | Its manual directs owners to use the lunar calendar in the manual to calculate days since the last full moon. |
These details are examples, not interchangeable instructions. In particular, Patek Philippe’s general page and its caliber 324 S QA LU 24H manual use different day-count conventions. Use one procedure only when it applies to your watch.
Finding the last full moon and calculating the advances
Use a full moon calendar to identify the reference date, then count forward to the date you want the watch to show. Follow your manual’s counting convention: one set of instructions may include the day you are setting, while another may exclude the correction day. Because a moonphase corrector can move the display by one day per actuation on some models, that count may translate into the same number of presses—but verify the mechanism and counting rule in your watch’s manual.

Patek Philippe’s general instruction puts the method this way: “To position the moon in its exact phase, press the corrector button on your watch as many times as there are days since the last full moon.” Apply that advice only to a watch whose own instructions use that procedure.

When to stop and get help
Do not guess at a recessed corrector, force a resistant control or borrow a timing warning from a different model. Some complex watches have unusually involved settings: Patek Philippe’s Sky Moon Tourbillon instructions specify using the setting stylus delivered with the watch, while its celestial complications guidance includes procedures involving numerous crown revolutions and alignment marks.
