How to Set and Wind an MB&F Legacy Machine 1 EVO

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To wind the MB&F Legacy Machine 1 EVO, slide the Home Time crown (A) into its “In” position and turn it until the power-reserve hand reaches the full position at the right side of its indicator. To set the Home Time, pull crown (A) to “Out,” turn it, then slide it back against the case. Set the independent Second Time zone in exactly the same way with crown (B). After every operation, return the crown against the case.

The LM1 EVO is a manually wound watch with two genuinely independent hours-and-minutes displays. Its 60-hour reserve, 42 mm case and 80-metre water-resistance rating make correct crown handling important: the official instructions specify the positions and sliding action, but do not publish a torque value, so stop when the reserve indicates full rather than forcing the crown.

Identify the controls before you begin

The LM1 EVO has two crowns serving different jobs. Crown (A) is the Home Time crown and also winds the movement. Crown (B) controls the Second Time zone. Each crown has an “In” position, seated against the case, and an “Out” position used for setting. The official manual describes the crowns as sliding in and out rather than being operated by a conventional pull-and-turn sequence.

Look at the two suspended hour-and-minute subdials before touching either crown. One is your Home Time display; the other is the independently adjustable Second Time display. They are not a normal local-time-plus-GMT arrangement in which one hand is mechanically derived from the other. MB&F states that each subdial has its own hours and minutes, so the displays can represent time zones with offsets that are not whole hours.

The inclined power-reserve indicator sits in the lower part of the composition. Its hand travels across the indicator as the mainspring’s available energy changes. The manual defines the endpoints unambiguously: the hand fully to the left means empty, and fully to the right means full.

How to wind the LM1 EVO

1. Check whether the movement has stopped

If both time displays are no longer advancing, the movement has stopped and needs winding before it can run again. Even when the watch is still running, you can add energy by winding it with crown (A). Place the watch securely in your hand so that you can feel the crown’s sliding position and see the reserve indicator.

2. Slide Home Time crown (A) to the “In” position

The official LM1 EVO manual says to wind with the Home Time crown (A) in position “In.” Keep the crown seated against the case while winding; this is the position intended for supplying energy to the manually wound movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Turn the crown until the reserve is full

Turn crown (A) and watch the power-reserve hand. Continue until the hand points fully to the right, the manual’s definition of maximum power-reserve capacity. The movement uses a single slipping mainspring barrel and has a stated 60-hour power reserve according to MB&F’s 2026 product information.

The manual does not specify a winding direction, a number of turns or a torque value. Those details should not be guessed. Use the reserve hand as the stopping signal: when it reaches the full, right-hand position, stop turning rather than attempting to tighten the crown further.

4. Confirm the crown is back against the case

After winding, make sure crown (A) is slid back against the case. The same seated position should be restored after setting either time display. This is part of the manufacturer’s operating instruction, not an optional presentation detail.

How to set the Home Time

1. Move crown (A) to “Out”

With the watch supported, slide the Home Time crown (A) to its “Out” position. Do not use crown (B) for this adjustment; crown (B) is reserved for the Second Time zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Turn crown (A) to set the Home Time display

Turn crown (A) until the hours and minutes shown on the Home Time subdial match the time you want to use as home or reference time. Because the LM1 EVO provides hours and minutes for each zone, set the minute hand as well as the hour hand rather than treating the second display as a simple hour-jump indication.

The two displays are independent, so changing Home Time does not require you to calculate or mechanically “track” the Second Time zone. Decide which subdial represents Home Time before adjusting, then use only crown (A) for that display.

3. Slide crown (A) back against the case

When the Home Time reading is correct, slide crown (A) back against the case. The official wording specifically instructs the owner to slide the crown back after setting; do not leave it in “Out” while wearing or storing the watch.

How to set the Second Time zone

1. Move crown (B) to “Out”

Use the crown associated with the Second Time display, crown (B), and slide it to “Out.” Crown (A) should remain seated unless you also intend to wind or adjust Home Time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Turn crown (B) to set hours and minutes

Turn crown (B) until the second subdial shows the desired local or reference time. The LM1 EVO’s architecture allows the second display to be set completely independently, including offsets that are not whole hours. That makes it suitable for a second location whose civil time differs by a half-hour or another minute offset, provided that is the time you intend to display.

3. Return crown (B) to the case

Once the second reading is correct, slide crown (B) back against the case. Check visually and by touch that the crown is seated before you put the watch on. The manual gives the same return-to-case instruction for this crown as for Home Time.

Setting both displays in a reliable sequence

When the watch needs a complete reset, use a fixed order so that you do not lose track of which display each crown controls.

  1. Wind first. With crown (A) in “In,” turn until the reserve hand reaches the full position at the right.
  2. Set Home Time. Slide crown (A) to “Out,” adjust the Home Time hours and minutes, and slide it back against the case.
  3. Set the Second Time zone. Slide crown (B) to “Out,” adjust the second display, and slide it back against the case.
  4. Perform a final check. Verify that both crowns are seated, the two displays show the intended readings, and the reserve hand is not at the empty, fully-left position.

This order separates energy management from time adjustment. It also avoids the common mistake of moving crown (A) when you mean to change the second display, or moving crown (B) when you mean to wind.

Understanding the two independent time zones

On many dual-time watches, a GMT mechanism links a second hand or disc to the primary display. The LM1 EVO is different. MB&F describes each subdial as having its own hours and minutes, with the two zones set completely independently. In practical terms, you can establish Home Time first, then choose a Second Time reading without relying on a fixed whole-hour relationship.

Choosing which time belongs on each display

Use Home Time for the location or reference that should remain your primary reading. The Second Time display can represent a current travel destination, a second office, family time or any other location you need to monitor. The watch does not force a particular geographic pairing; the important operational rule is to use the matching crown for the display you have chosen.

Handling non-whole-hour offsets

Because both displays include minutes and are not limited to a conventional GMT hour step, you can set the second zone to a civil time with a minute offset. Advance the second display with crown (B) until its hour and minute hands agree with the target time, then return the crown to the case. No separate offset calculation is built into the crown procedure.

Reading and managing the 60-hour power reserve

The LM1 EVO’s manually wound movement stores up to 60 hours of running time when the reserve indicator is fully to the right. As the stored energy is consumed, the hand moves away from that full position; when it is fully to the left, the capacity is empty. The indicator is an inclined dial in the lower composition, replacing the original LM1’s vertical indicator.

What to do when the hand is near empty

Wind with crown (A) in the “In” position and observe the hand while turning. If the hand reaches the full, right-hand endpoint, stop. If the watch has already stopped, winding it before setting the displays restores the movement’s operating energy; then set Home Time and the Second Time zone using their respective “Out” positions.

Why the reserve matters to daily use

MB&F characterizes the additional autonomy as giving the machine more freedom away from the crown while retaining the direct, manual-winding connection. A 60-hour capacity can cover a weekend interval when the watch is not being worn, but the indicator—not a guessed number of turns—should determine when the watch needs winding.

LM1 EVO specifications relevant to operation

Feature LM1 EVO specification Why it matters when operating the watch
Winding system Manual winding; single slipping mainspring barrel Energy is supplied through crown (A); there is no automatic winding rotor.
Power reserve 60 hours — MB&F, 2026 The reserve hand shows available capacity from empty at the left to full at the right.
Time displays Two independent hours-and-minutes zones Use crown (A) for Home Time and crown (B) for the Second Time zone.
Case diameter 42 mm — MB&F, 2026 Both operating crowns are integrated into this case layout.
Water resistance 80 metres / 8 ATM / 270 feet — MB&F, 2026 Keep the crowns seated against the case after every operation and treat the rating as the manufacturer’s stated resistance specification.
Power-reserve indicator design Inclined lower dial The full and empty readings are identified by the hand’s right and left endpoints.

LM1 EVO versus the original LM1

The operating sequence remains centered on manual winding and two time displays, but the EVO changes several practical specifications and design details. The figures below are the manufacturer’s 2026 values cited for each model.

Comparison point LM1 EVO Original LM1
Power reserve 60 hours 45 hours
Power-reserve indicator Inclined dial in the lower composition Vertical indicator
Case size 42 mm diameter 44 × 16 mm
Crown construction Screw-down crowns The cited original-model material does not establish the same EVO crown construction.
Shock protection FlexRing system The cited comparison material does not give an original-model FlexRing specification.
Strap system Interchangeable integrated rubber straps The cited comparison material does not establish an equivalent original-model strap system.

The longer EVO reserve is the most direct operational difference: the watch can run for up to 60 hours at full capacity rather than the original LM1’s 45 hours. Its smaller stated diameter and inclined reserve display also change how the watch presents on the wrist and how you read the remaining energy.

Crown handling, water resistance and precautions

Seat both crowns after every adjustment

The manual repeatedly directs the owner to slide the active crown back against the case after winding or setting. Make this the final action in each operation. A crown left in the “Out” position is not the normal closed configuration described by the instructions.

Do not invent a tightening force

The available operating instructions do not publish a torque value. Do not use a tool, add leverage or continue turning after the reserve hand indicates full. If a crown will not slide, feels damaged or does not seat normally, stop and seek an authorized MB&F retailer or service channel rather than forcing it.

Interpret the water-resistance figure accurately

MB&F lists the LM1 EVO at 80 metres, 8 ATM or 270 feet of water resistance. That is the published specification for the watch; it is not a substitute for confirming that both crowns are correctly seated. Crown concerns, strap replacement and servicing should be handled through an authorized MB&F retailer or service channel.

Troubleshooting the common operating problems

The watch has stopped after winding

Check that you used crown (A), not crown (B), and that crown (A) was in the “In” position. Wind while watching the reserve hand. If it does not move toward the right or the movement does not restart after the hand reaches the full position, stop repeated attempts and contact an authorized MB&F service channel.

The wrong time display changed

You used the crown assigned to the other zone. Crown (A) adjusts Home Time; crown (B) adjusts the Second Time zone. Return the active crown to the case, identify the display that is incorrect, then use only its matching crown in “Out” to correct it.

A crown will not return against the case

Do not force or tighten it with an improvised tool. Keep the watch away from water and arrange inspection through an authorized MB&F retailer or service channel. The supplied instructions specify the seated end position but do not provide a user repair procedure for a crown that will not seat.

The reserve hand is at the far left

Far-left means empty according to the manual. Wind with crown (A) in “In” until the hand reaches the right-hand full position, then seat the crown before setting either display.

A concise operating checklist

  • Identify crown (A) as Home Time plus winding, and crown (B) as Second Time.
  • For winding, keep crown (A) in “In.”
  • Use the reserve hand’s endpoints: left is empty; right is full.
  • For Home Time, use crown (A) in “Out.”
  • For the Second Time zone, use crown (B) in “Out.”
  • Set hours and minutes on each display independently.
  • Slide the active crown back against the case after every operation.
  • Stop if a crown resists, will not seat or behaves differently from the manual’s instructions.

One specification that should not be assumed

MB&F’s current LM1 EVO product information contains an unresolved component-count discrepancy. Its descriptive copy says the hand-finished calibre comprises 338 components and 25 jewels, while the technical specification lists 270 components and 25 jewels. The jewel count agrees, but the component figures do not. Since the manufacturer’s page does not resolve that conflict, neither number should be treated as the definitive component count when describing or evaluating the watch.
