First check the four-digit caliber code on the case back: it appears to the left of the hyphen. Spring Drive setting procedures vary by caliber, so use the instructions for your exact movement. The steps below cover 9R84, 9R65 and 9R15, plus 9R96, 9R86, 9R16 and 9R66; for another caliber, find its manual in Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive instructions index.
Before setting: identify the caliber and prepare the watch
- Read the four-digit caliber code on the case back, to the left of the hyphen. Follow that caliber’s manual rather than assuming all Spring Drive watches set alike.
- Wind the mainspring sufficiently and make sure the watch is running before setting. For the covered calibers, if the watch has stopped, wind it and wait about 30 seconds after the seconds hand begins moving before pulling the crown to the second click.
- Do not leave the seconds hand stopped for more than 30 minutes. If it has been stopped longer, push the crown in, let the watch run for about 30 seconds, then begin setting again.
- If your watch has a screw-down crown, unscrew it before adjusting and screw it back in afterward.

Setting procedure by caliber group

For 9R84, 9R65 and 9R15: date first, then time
- Pull the crown to the first click and adjust the date.
- Pull the crown to the second click and set the time.
- Push the crown back in and, if it is screw-down, screw it back in securely.
Grand Seiko warns: “Do not adjust the date when the time the watch indicates is between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.” If you need to set the date while the indicated time falls in that interval, pull the crown to the second click, advance the hour hand past 1:00 a.m., then return the crown to the first click and set the date. These instructions are in the 9R84/9R65/9R15 manual.
For 9R96, 9R86, 9R16 and 9R66: set the 24-hour and minute hands first
- With the watch running and sufficiently wound, pull the crown to the second click when the seconds hand—or small seconds hand—points to zero. The seconds hand stops.
- Turn the crown counterclockwise, viewed in the manual’s 6 o’clock direction, to move the 24-hour and minute hands clockwise. Set the minute hand a few minutes behind the target time, then advance it slowly.
- Push the crown in in time with a time signal.
- Pull the crown to the first click. Turn it to move the hour hand in one-hour increments and set the date as needed.
- Push the crown in when finished and relock it if it is screw-down.

Correcting the date after a short month
On 9R96, 9R86, 9R16 and 9R66, two full rotations of the hour hand advance the date by one day. Manual date correction is needed on the first day after a month with fewer than 31 days: February, April, June, September and November. The crown can be turned either way; choose the direction that requires less adjustment and turn slowly. Grand Seiko describes this correction in the same caliber-group manual.
