A Spring Drive seconds hand glides because the watch’s mainspring-powered gear train is regulated by a quartz oscillator, an integrated circuit and an electromagnetic brake. The glide is a feature of the regulating system, not a conventional mechanical hand sweep. A hand that appears slightly off a dial marker raises a separate question: Grand Seiko’s public materials do not specify a universal acceptable alignment tolerance, so there is no published number that makes every small offset normal.
Why does the Spring Drive seconds hand glide?
Spring Drive combines mechanical power with electronic time regulation. Grand Seiko calls the arrangement the Tri-Synchro Regulator, because mechanical, electrical and electromagnetic elements work together:

- The mainspring supplies power through the gear train.
- At the end of the train, the glide wheel turns and interacts with a coil to generate electricity.
- That electricity powers a quartz oscillator and integrated circuit (IC). The oscillator provides a time reference, and the IC compares it with the glide wheel’s speed.
- When needed, the IC applies an electromagnetic brake to regulate the glide wheel. That regulation passes back through the gear train to the hands.
Grand Seiko says the 9R system’s glide wheel makes eight full revolutions per second; construction can vary between calibers. Because the wheel is regulated without the repeated contact of a conventional club-tooth escapement, the seconds hand moves continuously and quietly rather than ticking from marker to marker. Grand Seiko describes it as a “uniquely smooth and silent glide motion.”

Why doesn’t it tick like a quartz or mechanical watch?
A conventional quartz watch typically advances its seconds hand in distinct steps, while a traditional mechanical watch moves through the action of its escapement. Spring Drive uses a quartz oscillator as a timing reference, but the mainspring drives the hands through the gear train; electromagnetic braking regulates the glide wheel. So the quartz component does not make the hand tick as it would in a typical quartz watch.

Does a slight offset from the dial markers mean something is wrong?
Not necessarily—but there is no universal published offset tolerance to use as a pass-or-fail rule. Grand Seiko’s public movement and support information explains how Spring Drive works and gives timekeeping guidance, but does not state a numeric allowance for how closely the seconds hand must meet each dial index.
Timekeeping accuracy and hand alignment are different things. Accuracy describes how much time a watch gains or loses; alignment describes where the physical hand appears in relation to the dial markings. A watch can perform within its stated rate specification while a viewer still notices an apparent offset. Rate figures do not establish an alignment tolerance.

If you are concerned, check whether the apparent offset persists at several markers and from different viewing angles. If it is conspicuous or consistent, ask the retailer or Grand Seiko service to assess your exact model. This is practical guidance, not a manufacturer-published alignment test. Do not open the case or try to adjust the hand yourself. The public information reviewed does not establish how common such offsets are, so there is no reliable prevalence figure to apply to an individual watch.

Specifications depend on the caliber and model, so compare your watch with its own documentation rather than treating one figure as universal. Grand Seiko’s 2024 9R anniversary feature reports accuracy of ±0.5 second per day in some models and ±1 second per day in others. Separately, Grand Seiko support gives a general in-use guideline for Spring Drive of an average monthly gain or loss of ±15 seconds when worn within a normal temperature range of 5°C to 35°C, and directs owners to the instructions for their particular model. These are different kinds of guidance and should not be combined into a single specification.

Caliber-specific time-setting note: 9R01
Time-setting instructions are not an alignment remedy, and procedures can differ by caliber. For Cal. 9R01, the manual says to wind the mainspring sufficiently before setting the time. When restarting a stopped watch, wind it and wait about 30 seconds after the seconds hand starts before pulling the crown to its second click. The manual says to pull the crown when the hand is at 12 o’clock to stop it. If the hand has been stopped for more than 30 minutes, push the crown back in, let the watch run for about 30 seconds, then set the time. Follow the manual for your own caliber; these steps are specific to 9R01.
