On the 39 mm quartz Timex Pan Am x Waterbury GMT, reference TW2W97300, pull the crown to position B and turn it counter-clockwise to set the fourth, or GMT, hand. Push the crown back to position A when finished. First check the reference on the caseback or purchase materials: other Pan Am Waterbury GMT models have different references, and this setting procedure is not confirmed for them.
Check which Pan Am Waterbury GMT you have
Timex’s product page identifies the 39 mm quartz model as TW2W97300 and links its user manual. Other Pan Am Waterbury GMT variants include a 41 mm quartz model, TW2Y94600, and a 41.5 mm automatic model, TW2Y94300. Match your watch’s reference to its own Timex manual rather than assuming the TW2W97300 instructions apply.

Set the second time zone on TW2W97300
- Find the crown on the side of the watch and pull it to position B, the intermediate setting position shown in the Timex analog guide.
- Turn the crown counter-clockwise until the fourth/GMT hand points to the desired time on the 24-hour scale. In position B, clockwise rotation adjusts the date instead.
- Push the crown back to position A.
- Check the GMT hand against the 24-hour scale. Read whether the target time is before or after noon; the GMT hand is not read like a conventional 12-hour hand.
Use the positions and illustrations in the Timex analog user guide. Do not pull the crown farther or apply force based on an assumed distance.

What moves when you set the GMT hand?
Timex describes TW2W97300 as an office/caller GMT rather than a flyer GMT. In a response on the product page, Timex says: “The Pan Am® x Timex Waterbury GMT 39mm Leather Strap Watch features an office/caller GMT movement, not a flyer GMT. This means the GMT hand is set independently to track a second time zone while the main hour hand remains fixed.” In practical terms, this setting changes the GMT hand, not the main hour hand for travel.
Take care when using the crown
The Timex guide advises against pulling the crown underwater unless the watch is marked 200-meter water-resistant, and says to return the crown to its normal position after setting. Check the water-resistance marking and manual for your specific watch; ratings and instructions should not be assumed to be the same across variants.
