A quartz watch uses a battery for energy and a vibrating quartz crystal as its timing reference. An electronic circuit counts the crystal’s steady oscillations and turns them into seconds; in an analog watch, pulses then drive a motor and gears to move the hands. The crystal makes quartz watches accurate, but temperature and the movement’s design still affect how closely a watch keeps time.
How does a quartz watch work?
The basic timekeeping chain is battery, oscillator, circuit and display. The battery supplies power; it does not measure time or set the watch’s rate. Instead, a quartz crystal vibrates at a stable resonant frequency, and the watch’s electronics use those vibrations as a regular signal to count.

- The battery supplies energy. It powers the oscillator and electronic circuit.
- The crystal vibrates. An electrical signal excites the piezoelectric quartz element, whose mechanical resonance supports a regular electrical signal. - The circuit counts the signal. It divides the rapid oscillations into a signal that marks each second.
- The watch presents the time. In an analog watch, timed electrical pulses drive a step motor and gear train that advance the hands. A digital watch uses quartz timekeeping but presents the time electronically.

Many wristwatch quartz oscillators run at 32,768 hertz, or 32,768 cycles per second. The circuit repeatedly divides that signal by two; because 32,768 is 215, fifteen binary divisions produce one pulse per second. The crystal’s high-frequency vibration is not itself a visible tick for every oscillation. The circuit reduces it to a usable timing signal. In an analog quartz watch, the motor typically advances the hands in steps; the visible second hand’s movement is the result of those pulses and the movement’s design.
What does the battery do in a quartz watch?
The battery provides the electrical energy needed to sustain the oscillator and run the circuit. The quartz crystal supplies the repeating timing reference; the battery is not a clock and does not determine the rate. Battery type and replacement procedure are specific to the watch model. A general description of quartz watches does not establish which battery fits a particular watch or how its case should be opened and resealed.
How accurate is a quartz watch?
The Japan Clock & Watch Association gives ±20 seconds per month as a general accuracy figure for a quartz watch. That is not a guarantee for every watch or a replacement for the specification of a particular movement. Actual rate depends on the oscillator, movement design and operating conditions. Frequency error accumulates over time. As an illustration—not a typical-watch test result—NIST calculates that a quartz frequency error of 0.1 Hz would make a watch about 0.26 seconds off per day. NIST’s timekeeping FAQs
A 2008 NIST research record describes measurements of the stepping motors and crystal oscillators in four watches over 30 days, but the record does not give individual results, so it cannot support a specific performance figure for those watches. NIST, “The Accuracy and Stability of Quartz Watches”

What affects quartz-watch accuracy?
Temperature
Quartz oscillator rate is affected by temperature. A watch may therefore run at a slightly different rate as conditions change. The effect and its practical importance depend on the specific movement; a general accuracy figure does not predict an individual watch’s performance in every environment.

Accuracy depends not simply on using a high-frequency signal, but on how consistently the oscillator maintains its rate and how the movement is designed. Higher-accuracy approaches described by the Japan Clock & Watch Association include higher-frequency oscillators and temperature adjustment.

Automatic time correction
Some higher-accuracy designs can correct their displayed time by receiving official time signals by radio. This is distinct from the quartz oscillator itself: the crystal provides the local timing signal, while reception can periodically correct the watch against an external time reference.
What to check when comparing quartz watches
- Accuracy specification: Look for the manufacturer’s stated rate and any conditions attached to it, rather than treating a general figure as a promise for every model.
- Temperature compensation: Check whether the movement includes a temperature-adjustment feature if this matters for your use.
- Time correction: Determine whether the watch receives official time signals or has another automatic correction system.
- Display and movement: Analog models commonly use pulses, a step motor and gears to move hands; digital models show time electronically. Special analog movements can use different motor or pulse arrangements.
- Battery service: Confirm the correct battery and service procedure for the exact model. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that two watches are quartz.
The essential idea
The battery powers the watch, the quartz oscillator provides a stable repeating signal, and the circuit converts that signal into timekeeping pulses. A frequency of 32,768 Hz is commonly divided into one-second intervals. Quartz is highly accurate, but no general figure guarantees the rate of every watch under every condition.
