Treat the paths below as general Garmin instructions, and check your watch’s own manual before changing settings. To keep a route, GPS distance, pace, or map, leave GPS enabled for the activity; review Battery Saver’s effects on all-day tracking and health metrics before turning it on.
How to save battery without losing your activity data
Separate everyday power saving from settings for a recorded workout. Battery Saver is intended to conserve power in watch mode, especially when you are not recording an activity. For a workout, use that activity’s Power Mode and preserve the GPS settings required for the record you want.

Use Battery Saver selectively between activities
Garmin’s general path on compatible watches is Settings > Power Manager > Battery Saver > Status. Some models let you customize options through Edit. The options vary by watch and may affect the watch face, music, phone connection, Wi-Fi, activity tracking, wrist heart rate, Pulse Ox, and backlight. Garmin says the watch estimates the change in battery life as you adjust settings; that estimate is not a model-specific guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore switching a feature off, decide whether its data matters to you. Turning off activity tracking stops recording steps, floors climbed, sleep monitoring, Intensity Minutes, and Move IQ events. Turning off wrist heart rate stops heart-rate monitoring and sleep metrics, as well as other functions that depend on it. Battery Saver is therefore not necessarily data-neutral: keep the features you rely on enabled. Garmin describes Battery Saver as useful for conserving battery while not recording activities (Garmin Support: How to Use Power Manager on Garmin Watches).

Keep GPS on when the activity needs a route or map
Turning off GPS for an activity stops its track recording, GPS-derived distance and pace, and activity map in Garmin Connect, along with other GPS-dependent features. If you want any of those, keep GPS enabled and save power with other features you do not need for that outing. Check what each change removes from the activity before you start.
Set a Power Mode for a recorded activity
For a GPS workout, use an activity-specific Power Mode rather than assuming everyday Battery Saver will preserve your preferred recording setup. Garmin’s general guidance is to open Activities or Activities & Apps, select an activity, open its settings, and choose Power Mode. You can set a default mode for that activity or use Auto Enable to engage a selected mode when the remaining battery reaches a threshold. The activity records using the chosen mode’s settings. Menu names and availability can vary by model; consult your watch’s manual for its supported options (Garmin Support: How to Use Power Manager on Garmin Watches).

Choose a GPS recording method for the route detail you need
Recording methods trade off track detail, battery use, and storage. Garmin’s descriptions are general characteristics, not an independent comparison test, and the options may not be available on every model.
| Method | Track detail | Battery and storage trade-off | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Recording | Saves key data points as direction, speed, heart rate, or elevation changes. | Garmin says it benefits battery life and uses less storage without negatively affecting GPS accuracy. | When you want Garmin’s stated balance of efficient recording and useful track data. |
| Every Second Recording | Stores a GPS point once per second regardless of changes. | Garmin says it uses significantly more memory and battery. | When a more detailed track matters more than memory and battery efficiency. |
| UltraTrac | Records GPS data less often; Garmin says it records one GPS point per minute. | Extends battery life in GPS mode by reducing recording frequency, with less track detail. | Garmin describes it as useful for multiday activities or when precise GPS is not needed—not for preserving a detailed route. |
Sources: Garmin Customer Support: Smart Recording vs. Every Second Recording on Garmin Devices and Garmin Support: Setting a Garmin Watch to UltraTrac Mode for Longer Battery Life. Garmin’s GPS-method guidance describes UltraTrac’s once-per-minute interval; availability and settings depend on the watch (Garmin Customer Support: How to Improve GPS Distance, Speed and Pace Data With Garmin Devices).

Which Garmin battery settings affect GPS tracking?
The key distinction is whether a change disables GPS for the activity or merely reduces how often GPS points are saved. Disabling GPS removes the track, GPS-derived distance and pace, and map. UltraTrac keeps GPS recording but samples it at a much lower frequency, so it sacrifices detail. Smart Recording and Every Second Recording also differ in how frequently points are captured, with Garmin characterizing the latter as more detailed but more demanding on battery and memory.
Before relying on a setting, verify that it appears on your watch and check its consequences in that model’s official manual. Garmin’s support guidance and feature lists do not establish that an Enduro 4 exists, confirm that these features work on it, or verify its exact menu path. An Enduro 3 feature listing, for example, would not establish Enduro 4 compatibility.
