What you need before starting
- A Galaxy Watch 5 or Watch 5 Pro paired with an Android phone in the Galaxy Wearable app.
- A Samsung account and a supported debit or credit card. Card availability depends on the issuer, payment network, country and region.
- A watch PIN, pattern or other supported screen lock. Samsung requires a watch lock for payment cards.
- An internet connection on the phone while adding and verifying a card.
Samsung says a non-Samsung Android phone must run Android 6.0 or later for Samsung Pay on a smartwatch. Compatibility and available screens can still vary by phone model, carrier, software and region. See Samsung’s Watch5 compatibility and setup guidance and Samsung’s payment setup instructions.
The Watch 5 makes payments over NFC, so look for a contactless terminal. Do not expect it to emulate a magnetic stripe using MST; Samsung’s watch guidance describes Watch 4 and Watch 5 support as payment-card functionality. Availability and features vary by country and device. Samsung’s FAQ and device support information explain the limits.
Set up Samsung Pay from Galaxy Wearable
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone and confirm that the Galaxy Watch 5 is connected.
- Go to Watch settings → Pay. Depending on software, the entry may be labeled Samsung Pay or Samsung Wallet. If you do not see it there, check Watch settings → Apps → App settings.
- Sign in to your Samsung account if prompted, grant the requested permissions, and allow the payment watch plug-in or any required update to install.
- Set a PIN, pattern or other supported screen lock on the watch when prompted. Payment setup cannot be completed without the required lock.
- Choose Add card. If that option is not shown, open the three-dot More options menu and choose Add, then select payment cards.
- Enter the card details or import an eligible card already registered on the phone, and accept the card terms.
- Complete the identity check offered by the bank or card issuer. It may use a text message, phone call, banking-app approval or another method. Wait until the card shows as verified or activated.
Samsung’s current phone-side instructions use the path Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Pay. Card approval is controlled by the issuer and payment network, not Samsung alone. Samsung’s FAQ describes Watch 5 payment-card support; its card setup guidance covers internet access during registration and verification.

Start setup from the watch instead
- Press and hold the watch’s Back button.
- If this is the first launch, swipe through the introduction and tap the arrow to begin.
- Set a watch PIN or screen lock if asked.
- Continue setup on the connected phone, then tap Add card on the watch.
- Follow the phone prompts and complete the issuer’s verification.
Although setup can start on the watch, it continues through the connected phone. Samsung describes this flow in its Galaxy Watch payment instructions and Watch5 support guide.
Pay with the Galaxy Watch 5
- Press and hold the Back button for about 1–2 seconds to open Pay.
- Swipe to the card you want to use.
- Enter the watch PIN or complete any other requested authentication.
- Hold the watch near the terminal’s contactless/NFC symbol until the terminal confirms the payment.
The terminal must accept contactless payments, and the issuer must approve the transaction. Samsung’s watch payment guide and Watch5 support instructions show the button and tap flow.

Why Pay or Samsung Pay is missing
Samsung’s naming and menu labels vary: its general instructions call the phone service Samsung Wallet, while its FAQ identifies Watch 4 and Watch 5 payment support as Samsung Pay for payment cards. Depending on region, software and app version, look for Pay, Samsung Pay or Samsung Wallet rather than assuming every Watch 5 displays the same label. Samsung’s FAQ explains the distinction.
- Confirm the watch is connected in Galaxy Wearable.
- Update Galaxy Wearable, the watch software and the Samsung Pay/Wallet watch plug-in.
- Check Watch settings → Pay, then Watch settings → Apps → App settings.
- Confirm that the service is available for the watch’s country or region and that the phone and card are supported. For a non-Samsung phone, check that it runs Android 6.0 or later.
- Restart both the phone and watch.
Menu locations and availability can differ by carrier, model and software version. Samsung’s setup page, Watch5 guidance and troubleshooting steps cover these variations.

Fix card registration or verification problems
Card cannot be registered
Possible causes include an issuer that does not support the card in Samsung Pay, an ATM-only card, an unsupported country or region, a lost internet connection, an issuer device limit, or a replaced card whose old payment token is no longer valid. Check eligibility with the bank, ensure the phone has Wi-Fi or mobile data, restart it, and try adding the card again. Approve any bank-app request or use the issuer’s alternative verification method. If the card is still rejected, contact the card issuer first; it controls card eligibility and approval. Card is pending verification
A pending status usually means Samsung Pay has not received a response from the issuer. Confirm that the phone is online, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart the phone, then check the card status again. If the bank says verification is complete but the card remains pending, contact Samsung Pay support. Samsung’s pending-verification guidance describes this recovery sequence.

The watch asks for a PIN
This is expected: a PIN, pattern or other supported watch lock is required to use payment cards. Set or enter the lock rather than treating the prompt as a payment error. See Samsung’s setup instructions and watch troubleshooting guidance.

- Check the terminal: It must accept contactless/NFC payments. A magnetic-stripe-only reader will not work with the Watch 5.
- Check the tap: Hold the watch close to the terminal’s contactless area and wait for confirmation.
- Check NFC: On supported devices, use Settings → Connections → NFC and contactless payments, turn NFC on, then open Contactless payments and select Samsung Pay if offered. On the watch, check NFC from Quick Settings. Menu availability varies.
- Check the card: Confirm you selected the intended card and that it is active, not expired or blocked, and has available funds or credit.
- Consider merchant or issuer restrictions: A merchant may restrict contactless payments, or the issuer may decline the transaction. Samsung notes that the transaction after transmission is handled by the merchant, card network and issuer.

Do you need your phone or internet at checkout?
After a card is activated, Samsung says the watch can generally be used without the paired phone nearby and without Wi-Fi or cellular service. An internet connection is needed while adding or verifying a card, and some verification actions may require connectivity. Samsung’s FAQ covers watch use without the phone; its card registration guidance covers setup connectivity.
What happens when you change phones or reset the watch?
Pairing an existing Galaxy Watch with a new Galaxy phone can reset the watch and require payment setup again. Back up watch data through Galaxy Wearable before resetting or making a major re-pairing change. A reset can erase local watch data, and you may need to register payment cards again. Samsung’s FAQ and reset and plug-in troubleshooting describe the implications.
Do not reset as a first fix for a missing payment app or card: check updates, connectivity, compatibility and issuer verification first. If the Samsung Pay watch plug-in still will not connect, Samsung’s last-resort recovery is to back up the watch, unpair and reset it, clear or reinstall Galaxy Wearable and the plug-in, reconnect, then set up Pay and add the cards again. Security and missing cards
Samsung says payment transactions use a device token rather than transmitting the physical card number to the merchant in the normal transaction flow. The watch lock adds an authentication barrier; repeated PIN or biometric failures can result in card data being removed. Samsung also says cards may be removed after a manual app reset or a remote reset request through SmartThings Find. If a card disappears, check for an issuer email and add it again if needed. Lost devices may be remotely locked or erased through Samsung device-finding tools where supported. These protections do not guarantee approval or override an issuer’s fraud decision.
