For a simple mile or kilometer announcement, use split controls if your watchOS version provides them. For run/walk sessions, HIIT, or planned repetitions, Custom Workout is the more flexible option—especially on the redesigned watchOS 26 Workout app.
Splits, segments, laps, and intervals: what is the difference?
A split is the performance for a defined portion of a workout, such as every mile or kilometer. Splits help you monitor pace, compare sections, and stay on schedule during a race or training run.

| What you want to do | Best Apple Watch feature |
|---|---|
| Hear progress every mile or kilometer | Split or distance alert, where available |
| Alternate running and walking | Custom Workout with work and recovery intervals |
| Repeat timed HIIT blocks | Custom Workout or an interval-timer app |
| Train within a heart-rate zone | Heart-rate or heart-rate-zone alert |
| Run a target distance in a target time | Pacer |
| Mark an unscheduled portion manually | Segment |
Apple’s terminology is not interchangeable: a segment is typically marked manually during a workout, while an interval is a planned work or recovery block. “Lap” is a term used by some apps and watches for a recurring checkpoint.

Set up recurring distance splits
The quickest method is useful when every checkpoint is the same—for example, an announcement every mile during an outdoor run.

- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
- Open the Workout app on Apple Watch.
- Select an activity such as Outdoor Run, Indoor Run, or Outdoor Walk.
- Open the workout’s options control before starting.
- Look for Splits, Split Alerts, Distance, or a similarly named control.
- Choose the distance or time checkpoint, then start the workout.
An earlier Apple Watch workflow used Preferences > Splits > Split Alerts, as described by macReports on January 19, 2025. Do not assume those exact labels appear on every release. watchOS 26 redesigned the Workout app, so the same controls may now be grouped under Goals, Alerts, or another options tile.
If you cannot find split controls, do not keep searching for the old Preferences menu. Use a Custom Workout for a planned session.
Create a custom work-and-recovery workout
Custom Workouts are better than simple splits when the Watch needs to guide you through a sequence of different stages.
- Open Workout and choose the activity.
- Tap the workout’s Goals or options control.
- Tap Custom, then Add.
- Add a Warmup, if required.
- Add a Work interval and choose Time, Distance, or Open.
- Tap Add again and add a Recovery interval.
- Repeat the work and recovery blocks as needed.
- Add a Cooldown, name the workout, and tap Create Workout.
- Start the saved workout from the activity’s Custom Workout options.
Apple supports multiple work and recovery intervals. During the session, the Up Next view can show what remains in the current interval and what comes next.

Example: 800-meter repetitions
- Warmup: Open
- Work: 800 meters
- Recovery: 400 meters
- Repeat: six times
- Cooldown: 10 minutes
Example: run/walk training
- Warmup: five minutes
- Work: run for three minutes
- Recovery: walk for one minute
- Repeat the work and recovery blocks
- Cooldown: five minutes
Custom Workout availability depends on the activity. Apple’s watchOS 26 guide excludes Multisport and Open Water Swim; some stationary activities, including Elliptical and Pilates, may not offer distance goals.
Add pace and heart-rate alerts
Splits tell you that a checkpoint has passed. Workout alerts warn you when a live metric reaches or leaves a target.
- Open Workout.
- Scroll to the activity.
- Tap the activity’s Alerts control.
- Choose the available alert type.
- Set the threshold, pace, heart-rate zone, cadence, power, or other target.
Available alert types vary by workout and Apple Watch features. Alerts added to a workout configuration are reused when you perform that configuration again. For a target-distance session with a desired finish time, use Pacer rather than treating ordinary splits as a pacing plan.

Make notifications audible and noticeable
A workout alert, an operating-system notification, voice feedback, and a wrist tap are different things. Configure each one separately when a missed prompt matters.

Check sound and haptics
- Open Settings on Apple Watch.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Raise the alert volume.
- Check Silent Mode and turn it off if you need sound.
- Increase haptic strength if wrist taps are difficult to feel.
Apple documents separate controls for alerts, Siri, and media playback, as well as haptic strength: Apple’s volume and haptics guide.
Turn on workout voice feedback
Check Settings > Workout > Voice Feedback. Menu wording can vary by watchOS release and language. If speech is still too quiet, check Siri’s volume and where audio is being routed. Connected Bluetooth headphones may receive the spoken alert instead of the Watch speaker.
Audio behavior can also depend on software. Apple specifically documented an audio-alert fix in watchOS 26.2.1 for cases where Workout app audio alerts could fail when the iPhone was not nearby; that does not mean every watchOS 26 release fixes every audio problem.

Troubleshoot missing or silent alerts
The Preferences menu is missing
This usually means the Watch has a newer Workout layout, a different activity was selected, or the control has moved. Update the Watch and iPhone if compatible, open the activity’s options before starting, and look for Custom, Alerts, Goals, or Workout Views.
There is no spoken announcement
- Confirm Settings > Workout > Voice Feedback.
- Raise alert and Siri volume.
- Check Silent Mode.
- Check connected headphones and audio routing.
- Confirm the alert is configured for the selected activity.
- Install a compatible watchOS update, including the documented 26.2.1 audio fix where applicable.
Haptics are too weak
Increase haptic strength under Settings > Sounds & Haptics and wear the Watch snugly enough for consistent contact. Workout Low Power Mode can turn off heart-rate notifications and delay other notifications, so avoid relying on it when live alerts are critical.
Distance alerts are inaccurate
A one-mile or one-kilometer alert is an estimate, not a guarantee that the Watch will trigger exactly at a race marker. Accuracy can vary with GPS reception, buildings, trees, tunnels, indoor workouts, treadmill calibration, the selected workout type, and sensor conditions.

The workout is not in Fitness
Check whether it was recorded in Apple’s Workout app or a third-party app, whether it was saved rather than discarded, and whether Health permissions are enabled. Third-party apps do not necessarily write identical split, interval, route, or workout fields to Apple Health.

Is a third-party interval app necessary?
For ordinary mile splits, pace alerts, heart-rate targets, and many work/recovery sessions, Apple’s built-in Workout app is the best place to start and requires no separate purchase.
A dedicated app is worthwhile when you need named intervals, complex repetitions, countdown haptics, more spoken prompts, specialized running screens, or detailed interval history.
- Intervals Pro: supports standalone Apple Watch operation, spoken prompts, configurable sounds, haptic countdowns, time- and distance-based intervals, heart-rate ranges, route tracking, and Apple Health integration. Its U.S. App Store listing viewed in August 2026 showed a free download with in-app purchases, including $2.99 monthly, $19.99 yearly, and $69.99 lifetime options. Prices vary by country and may change. View the App Store listing.
- WorkOutDoors: offers configurable intervals with duration, targets, screen layouts, haptic alerts, screen messages, and voice alerts. It is better suited to serious outdoor athletes who also want advanced maps and workout screens. See its interval features.
Do not buy an interval app merely to enable basic mile or kilometer alerts. First try the native split controls or Custom Workout.
