Yes—Apple Watch Ultra 3 supports two-way texting via satellite. Apple announced the feature on September 9, 2025, and the watch went on sale September 19, 2025. It can send and receive iMessages, send and receive SMS where carriers support it, share a location through Find My, and contact emergency services through Emergency SOS via satellite.
It is useful for occasional off-grid communication, but it is not a full replacement for a dedicated satellite messenger. Service depends on region, carrier support, an iPhone in some cases, a clear view of the sky, and a two-year inclusion period rather than a permanently free service.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 has built-in two-way satellite communication using Globalstar infrastructure or third-party satellite network providers, depending on the feature and region. Apple describes four separate uses:

- Find My: Send your location to contacts previously added in Find My.

iMessage and SMS have different requirements
iMessage
Satellite iMessage is not an unrestricted way to start conversations with any Apple user. iMessage must be enabled before you leave coverage, and you must have exchanged an iMessage with the recipient within the previous 30 days. The recipient needs iOS 18 or later to receive iMessages sent via satellite.
This makes preparation important: message the people you may need to contact before going off-grid. You can then send text, emoji, and Tapbacks when the watch establishes a satellite connection.
SMS
SMS over satellite requires carrier support. It also requires the paired iPhone to be:

- Powered on.
- Connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
- Paired with the watch, although it does not need to be physically nearby.
That last point is easy to misunderstand. Ultra 3 can be away from the iPhone, but SMS satellite messaging still depends on the paired iPhone being powered and connected. Someone who leaves the phone behind with a dead battery should not expect SMS to work.

Does Ultra 3 need a cellular plan?
Not for every satellite function. Apple says Emergency SOS via satellite is available without a cellular plan. Ordinary Messages and Find My location sharing, however, require an active carrier plan associated with the Apple Watch Ultra 3. SMS additionally depends on carrier support and may incur carrier charges.
So “satellite texting without a phone plan” is not an accurate general description. The watch is not a completely plan-free satellite communicator.
What you need before leaving coverage
Apple Watch Ultra 3 is an iPhone-only product. Apple’s buying documentation says it requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Before a trip, complete this checklist:
- Pair the watch with a compatible iPhone and install supported software updates.
- Confirm that the watch’s cellular service is active if you want Messages or Find My satellite features.
- Turn on iMessage on the paired iPhone.
- Exchange iMessages with likely contacts within the last 30 days.
- Add the satellite control to Control Center.
- Add the satellite complication to the watch face.
- Set up Medical ID and add emergency contacts.
- Run Apple’s satellite connection demo in an open area.

How to send a satellite message
- Go outdoors after the watch loses cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Open Messages, or tap the satellite control or complication.
- Choose the satellite messaging function.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to orient the watch toward the satellite.
- Keep the watch positioned as directed until transmission completes.
In ideal conditions, a message may take about 30 seconds. Light or medium foliage can push transmission beyond a minute, and dense foliage or blocked horizons can prevent a connection. Do not repeatedly resend while a message is still transmitting unless the interface reports a failure.

What satellite Messages cannot send
Satellite Messages is deliberately low-bandwidth. It does not support:

- Photos
- Videos
- Audio messages
- Stickers
- Group messages
It is best suited to short, purposeful updates such as “We are safe,” “We reached camp,” or “Meet us at the trailhead at 6 p.m.” It is not designed for normal high-volume messaging or media sharing.
Terrain and connection limitations
Satellite communication needs an outdoor view of the sky and horizon. Hills, mountains, canyons, tall buildings, and dense vegetation can block the signal. Light foliage may slow a transmission; dense foliage may stop it. Apple also warns that a wet watch may have reduced satellite performance.
Apple says satellite connectivity may not work above approximately 62 degrees latitude, including northern parts of Alaska. While satellite is active, the watch may temporarily have reduced Wi-Fi, cellular, or Bluetooth connectivity.
These limitations matter more than the headline feature. A satellite connection is intermittent and location-dependent, not an always-on substitute for cellular coverage or broadband.
Emergency SOS is not the same as texting
Emergency SOS uses a separate workflow intended for urgent situations. It can connect with emergency responders and, when configured, transmit Medical ID and emergency-contact information. It may also send answers to an emergency questionnaire, location, elevation, and remaining watch battery. Emergency contacts can be notified if you choose that option.
Apple also says severe crash or hard-fall detection can automatically send situation and location information when the wearer is unresponsive and the watch has satellite line of sight.
Do not treat this as a guarantee of rescue. Successful communication can still depend on battery level, regional availability, obstructions, satellite visibility, emergency-service coverage, and the ability to establish a connection. Find My location sharing
Ultra 3 can send your location through Find My via satellite to contacts already added in Find My. Apple says it can send an updated location once every 15 minutes. This requires an active carrier plan according to Apple’s watchOS setup documentation.

Availability varies by region and carrier
Apple’s satellite features are not available in every country or region. Availability can depend on the watch’s sales region, the specific feature, local satellite-network arrangements, and carrier support—especially for SMS.
Apple’s Australian support page says the features are not offered on Ultra 3 models purchased in certain locations, including Armenia, Belarus, mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Russia. Check Apple’s regional documentation and your carrier before buying or traveling. Carrier-provided satellite services are separate from Apple’s built-in satellite features; Apple documents those separately as features that may appear as “SAT” in Control Center. Satellite features are also unavailable if the iPhone is nearby and in Airplane Mode, according to Apple’s support documentation.

Apple says Emergency SOS, Find My, and Messages via satellite are included for two years after Apple Watch Ultra 3 activation. The cited Apple materials do not establish what the service will cost after that period, so buyers should not assume it will remain free indefinitely.
The U.S. Apple Store lists Apple Watch Ultra 3 from $799 as of August 18, 2026. That is the watch price, not the cost of a carrier plan. Carrier pricing, eligibility, and SMS fees are separate.

Garmin inReach is the stronger fit when satellite communication is central to the trip rather than an occasional smartwatch feature. Garmin requires an active satellite subscription.
ZOLEO’s U.S. plans, listed on August 18, 2026, start at $19.99 per month for 50 satellite messages, with $0.50 per additional message. Its $34.99-per-month Protect plan includes unlimited satellite messages subject to fair-use terms. ZOLEO also lists a $19.99 activation fee and a three-month minimum term; Location Share+ and Field Rescue are optional paid additions.
Those services are not directly interchangeable. Compare subscription terms, coverage, tracking, message allowances, emergency arrangements, hardware, and whether the paired phone can remain powered before choosing.
When Ultra 3 is—and is not—the right choice
Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you already use an iPhone, want an all-purpose smartwatch, take occasional trips beyond coverage, and can accept slow, text-only satellite communication with carrier and regional restrictions.
Choose a dedicated communicator instead if you use Android, need an independent satellite phone number, travel remotely for long periods, require regular tracking, send high volumes of messages, or routinely operate in dense forests, deep canyons, or high-latitude regions. A dedicated communicator is also the safer choice if the paired iPhone may be dead or unavailable.
