Start by checking the watch’s claimed identity
Before judging whether a listing looks convincing, write down what it claims: brand, model or reference, approximate period, movement type, and any stated serial or case numbers. Vintage watches can differ substantially across production periods, so compare the listing with references for the exact model and era rather than relying on a generic checklist.

eBay’s general guide recommends combining reference books, online resources, and expert opinions, and documenting markings, serial numbers, or stamps. A brand- and model-specific reference book can help with comparison, but it cannot authenticate an individual watch. Read eBay’s guide to authenticating collectibles.
Compare the description with the photos
Read the seller’s claims alongside the images. Check whether the stated model, movement, case, dial, hands, and visible markings agree with one another and with the claimed reference. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the watch is counterfeit.

- Look for clear, well-lit photos of relevant markings and, where possible, the movement.
- Ask the seller for additional images if important details are hidden, blurry, or absent.
- Compare visible numbers and stamps with the claimed watch and any documents supplied.
- Be cautious if the seller will not provide basic evidence needed to assess the listing.
No single serial number, document, or photograph proves authenticity on its own. eBay’s counterfeit policy gives the example of a watch carrying a brand trademark even though it was not made by the trademark owner, and states: “Counterfeit or fake items aren’t allowed on eBay.” See eBay’s Counterfeit policy.
Ask what is original, replaced, or serviced
Ask the seller to identify replaced or refinished parts, explain what they mean by “original,” and provide any available service records. A disclosed replacement strap or crystal does not automatically make a vintage watch counterfeit. eBay’s program criteria recognize that some vintage watches may have commonly replaced aftermarket parts, including straps, bracelets, crystals, spring bars, or gaskets; some replacements may be acceptable when an original part is no longer made.

That allowance is not blanket approval for every modification. eBay distinguishes certain customized watches with non-brand or non-period alterations from vintage replacements that may be acceptable. Check the seller and keep evidence
Review the seller’s history and return terms before paying. Keep a copy of the listing, photos, seller messages, and receipt so you can refer to the actual claims and condition shown at purchase.

eBay identifies invoices, serial numbers, grading reports, accepted certificates or letters of authenticity, and assay cards as records buyers may keep. Treat these as evidence to compare with the watch and listing—not as automatic proof. An authentication card issued through eBay records details such as the brand, model, reference, movement type, case material, bracelet type, and serial number, as applicable; it is a record of the service’s inspection, not a brand-issued certificate. eBay’s policy lists examples of authenticity documentation.

Pause before paying if the identity, markings, movement, or parts cannot be reconciled with reliable references, or if the seller cannot provide basic evidence. For a high-value watch or one whose details remain uncertain, seek an assessment from a watchmaker or specialist with experience in the exact brand and reference. Ask whether they can inspect the movement and relevant markings and provide written findings; compare expertise and fees before proceeding.
