If a vintage watch runs slowly, stops, or loses time, first record exactly what it is doing; the symptom alone does not reveal the cause. A watch may need winding, or its timekeeping may be affected by magnetism, shock, or movement condition. If a known mechanical watch may simply have run down, follow its own winding instructions gently. If it keeps stopping, has suddenly changed rate, or was dropped, have a watchmaker diagnose it rather than trying to adjust an unidentified movement.
Start by documenting the problem
Before changing anything, note the watch’s maker and model or reference, if known, and whether it is manual-wind mechanical, automatic, or quartz. Record whether it stops completely or continues running slowly, and measure how much time it gains or loses over a specific interval. Also note when it was last serviced and whether the change followed a drop, water exposure, or contact with a magnetic object.

If the watch is known to be mechanical and may have run down, use the maker’s instructions for that model. Patek Philippe recommends a few gentle crown turns to restart a stopped watch. Jaeger-LeCoultre warns against winding beyond the point of resistance because doing so can damage the mainspring. These are model-specific directions, not a universal winding count for an unidentified vintage watch. Do not force a crown that resists movement. Consider magnetism, but do not assume it is the cause
Seiko says magnetism can make a mechanical watch gain or lose time, and its effect may remain after the watch has been moved away from the magnetic source. Examples it identifies include cell phones, speakers, magnetic jewelry and clasps, hair dryers, electric razors, and refrigerator magnets. Keep the watch away from magnetic objects. If you suspect magnetism, Seiko recommends contacting an authorized service center for demagnetization; it is not a universal DIY fix. Seiko: accuracy factors and magnetism.
Keep an unverified vintage watch dry
Do not rely on an old water-resistance marking, past use, or a gasket replacement as proof that a vintage watch is water-resistant now. TAG Heuer says water resistance cannot be guaranteed for vintage watches and stopwatches even after overhaul and gasket replacement. If you see condensation or suspect water has entered the case, arrange professional assessment promptly; moisture can put components at risk. TAG Heuer: repair and service information.

When to take it to a watchmaker
Seek professional diagnosis if the watch repeatedly stops, its rate changes markedly or suddenly, or the problem began after a drop. Tell the watchmaker what you observed and when it happened. Depending on the watch and its condition, an evaluation may include accuracy and magnetism checks and inspection for worn or defective parts; cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, or repair may follow if needed. Do not apply a universal service interval
Service timing depends on the watch and its maker’s guidance. Patek Philippe recommends servicing its manually wound and self-winding mechanical watches every eight to ten years. That is Patek Philippe guidance for its watches, not a demonstrated interval for every vintage watch or maker.
