You can switch off announcements for every supported app or disable them just for Messages while keeping other announcements. Neither option turns Siri off.
Turn off announcements for all apps
On the iPhone paired with your AirPods, open Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap Announce Notifications and turn it off. Apple’s current menu label can vary; either route leads to the announcement controls. This stops Siri from reading notifications from Messages and other supported apps through compatible headphones. Apple’s instructions for Announce Notifications describe the global control.
This changes spoken announcements, not Siri as a whole. Voice commands, search and dictation remain available. It also does not necessarily silence ordinary Messages alerts: banners, sounds, badges and lock-screen notifications are controlled separately.
Turn off announcements for Messages only
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Notifications > Announce Notifications.
- Tap Messages.
- Turn off Announce Notifications.
This keeps announcements enabled for other apps you choose. If the Messages screen offers choices such as Time Sensitive and Direct Messages or All Notifications, select the level you want; available options can vary. The Messages-specific controls are documented in Apple’s AirPods guide and its iPhone guide.

Choose the setting that matches your goal
| Goal | Setting | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Stop all spoken notifications | Turn off Announce Notifications in Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri | Stops announcements from Messages and other supported apps. |
| Stop only text-message announcements | Turn off Announce Notifications for Messages under Notifications | Other apps can still announce notifications. |
| Keep only selected Messages announcements | Choose a narrower Messages option, if shown | Some eligible messages may still be announced. |
| Silence announcements for now | Use the Control Center Announce Notifications control | Provides a quick toggle; turn it back on when you want announcements again. |
| Stop one announcement in progress | Use the AirPods control or say “Stop” or “Cancel,” where supported | Dismisses the current reading but does not change future announcements. |
Temporarily switch announcements off in Control Center
If you want the feature available later but need quiet during a meeting or commute, add Announce Notifications to Control Center if it is not already there. Open Control Center and tap the control to switch announcements off or on. The exact customization interface can vary slightly in iOS 26; Apple’s Control Center guidance for Announce Notifications explains the shortcut.

Stop the current reading without changing settings
For a single interruption, use the control for your AirPods model. Apple documents these options in its guide to listening and responding with AirPods:
- AirPods 2: Say “Stop” or “Cancel,” or double-tap either AirPod.
- AirPods 3, AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 1: Press the force sensor.
- AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3: Press the Touch control.
- AirPods Max: Press the Digital Crown.
- Supported newer models: A side-to-side head shake can dismiss an announcement. Head gestures are not available on every model.
Dismissing the current announcement does not disable Announce Notifications, so later messages may still be read aloud.

Why Siri announces messages—and which devices support it
Announce Notifications lets Siri speak incoming notifications through compatible headphones. According to Apple’s support guidance, automatic announcements through headphones are intended for when they are worn and connected to the iPhone or iPad and the device is locked with its screen dark. Direct messages and time-sensitive notifications may be announced when the feature is on.

Apple lists AirPods 2 or later, AirPods Pro 1 or later, AirPods Max 1 or later and selected Beats models as compatible. The setting is on the paired iPhone or iPad, so AirPods Pro and AirPods Max use the same settings route; the main model difference here is how you dismiss a reading already in progress. Apple’s AirPods guide for iOS 26 or later covers both Pro and Max.

If Siri still reads Messages
- Check the Messages-specific control. Open Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications > Messages and confirm its announcement switch is off. If the global setting is off but messages are still being read, checking this per-app control helps rule out a remaining Messages setting.
- Change the setting on the device in use. Confirm you changed it on the iPhone or iPad currently connected to the AirPods, rather than another device.
- Confirm the active connection. Check Bluetooth and make sure the AirPods are connected to the expected device.
- Check for another source of audio. If you hear announcements from an Apple Watch, its controls are separate: on the Watch, open Settings > Siri > Announce Notifications. Apple describes the Watch controls in its Siri and AirPods guidance. If the announcements happen in a car through CarPlay rather than through AirPods, check the iPhone’s Announce Notifications settings; the AirPods connection may not be involved.
- Test with a new message. Dismiss any announcement already in progress, then test with a new incoming message to check whether the setting has taken effect.
- Reconnect only if the settings look right but the behavior continues. Toggle the setting off again, reconnect the AirPods, and restart the iPhone if needed. Resetting the AirPods is not the first step.
Focus can limit which notifications arrive, but it is not the direct control for whether Siri speaks Messages notifications. Use Announce Notifications for that behavior. Supported third-party apps may also use announcements, but support and per-app options vary.
