Avoid leaving it in a dark drawer for a long stretch. The exact reserve and charging schedule depend on the watch’s caliber, so use the corresponding Citizen manual rather than relying on one schedule for every Eco-Drive.
How to store an Eco-Drive watch
- Check the caliber. Find the caliber number on the caseback and look up its manual or setting instructions using Citizen’s official Eco-Drive guidance. Follow that model’s charging directions; recharge times vary by watch and light source.
- Charge it before storage. Expose the dial to light and make sure the watch is operating normally before putting it away. Use the manual’s stated procedure and duration.
- Let light reach the dial periodically. A watch box can protect the watch physically, but it will block light if closed. If you store it in a closed box or drawer, take it out for light exposure according to the caliber manual.
- Keep it away from excessive heat while charging. The B620 manual warns against charging at about 60°C (140°F) or higher; this is a B620-specific instruction, not a universal threshold for every caliber.
Can you keep an Eco-Drive in a drawer?
You can store it in a drawer temporarily, but a dark drawer is not a good place to leave it for a prolonged period without recharging. Citizen’s general guidance says not to store an Eco-Drive in darkness for more than six months; after that, give it the full recharge period specified for the watch. The six-month guidance is general, not a guarantee that every model will retain charge for that long.

If you want to use a watch box for protection, remove the watch periodically so light can reach its dial. That is a practical way to follow Citizen’s charging advice, not a Citizen endorsement of a particular box or storage case.

How often should you put it in sunlight?
Use the schedule for your caliber. For B620 models, Citizen recommends exposing the dial to direct sunlight for five to six hours at least once a month for optimal performance. That recommendation applies to B620; do not assume it is the right interval for another Eco-Drive. See the Citizen B620 manual for its instructions.

Eco-Drive watches convert light into stored energy, and artificial light can contribute as well as daylight. Citizen does not give one charging duration that fits every model and light source, so check the caliber manual before choosing a routine.
How long can an Eco-Drive stay in the dark?
Citizen describes a fully charged Eco-Drive as able to run for more than six months in total darkness, while noting exceptions. Selected power-save models may last up to seven years. These are broad figures from Citizen’s technology information, not a prediction for an unidentified watch; reserve depends on model and features. Avoid treating either figure as a recommended storage interval.

Citizen’s general advice is to keep dark storage to no more than six months, then provide the full recharge period for the specific watch. The caliber manual takes precedence for the watch’s reserve, charging time, and any power-save behavior.
What if the second hand jumps every two seconds?
On models with an insufficient-charge warning, a second hand moving in two-second intervals normally indicates that the watch needs recharging. Follow the charge instructions for its caliber. If the hand continues to jump after a full recharge, some models may need a movement reset; the procedure varies, so use the model’s instructions rather than trying a generic reset.

What to check before choosing a storage routine
- Caliber number: Use the number on the caseback to find the correct Citizen guide.
- Storage location: Decide whether the dial will receive light or whether you will take the watch out periodically.
- Time in darkness: Avoid prolonged dark storage and follow Citizen’s model-specific recharge guidance.
- Charging conditions: Keep the watch away from excessive heat and follow any temperature cautions in its manual.
- Operating status: If the second hand indicates low charge, recharge it; if the warning remains after a full charge, consult the manual for the model-specific next step.
