Citizen Eco-Drive watches turn light into electricity, store that energy in a rechargeable power cell, and use it to run the watch when light is unavailable. Natural and artificial light can both charge an Eco-Drive; direct sunlight is generally faster, but the charging rate and instructions depend on the specific watch and its movement caliber.
How does Eco-Drive turn light into power?
A solar cell converts light into electricity, which is stored in the watch’s power cell. The stored energy powers the movement and other functions, including in darkness. On Citizen’s standard design, the solar cell sits beneath a light-transmitting dial. Some models use a solar-ring cell around the dial, allowing different dial designs. The layout varies by model. Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology page describes the system.

“Solar” does not mean the watch must be placed in direct sun. Citizen says Eco-Drive can use natural or artificial light, though light sources and conditions do not charge every watch equally. Direct sunlight is the fastest, most efficient source according to Citizen’s technology information and its US support guidance.

Charging time depends on the watch, the light source, and the amount of light reaching the cell. Citizen Watch US Support publishes these examples for basic analog Eco-Drive watches; they are approximate guidance, not a schedule for every caliber. The support page does not state a publication date.

How to find charging instructions for your watch
- Find the movement caliber printed on the caseback. Citizen’s support article explains where to look and directs owners to the instructions for that caliber.
- Use Citizen’s charging support page to locate the corresponding charging guidance.
- Follow that movement’s instructions rather than treating the basic analog examples above as universal. Features and charging requirements vary by model.
How long can a charged Eco-Drive run in darkness?
Citizen’s general guidance says a fully charged Eco-Drive can run for at least or more than six months in total darkness, with exceptions by model. Select watches with power-save functionality are described as lasting up to seven years. These are broad technology claims, not a guaranteed reserve for every watch.

Those are specifications for those models, not a common test comparison or a promise for other Eco-Drive watches. See the listings for the BN1010-05E and AR5064-57L.

On models with an insufficient-charge warning, a second hand that advances in two-second intervals indicates that the watch needs more charge. Put it under suitable light and consult the caliber-specific guidance for charging duration. The warning behavior is feature-dependent, so a two-second jump is not universal to every Eco-Drive.

Some models also have a power-save feature: in darkness, the hands may stop, then resume when the watch detects light. That behavior is distinct from the insufficient-charge warning, and whether a watch has either feature depends on the model. Citizen describes these behaviors in its Eco-Drive technology information and charging support article.

What to remember about Eco-Drive charging
- Light becomes electricity in a solar cell; the watch stores that energy in a power cell for later use.
- Natural and artificial light can charge the watch, but charging speed varies; direct sunlight is generally fastest.
- Reserve and charging needs depend on the model and caliber. Check the caseback and use the matching instructions.
- A two-second jumping second hand can signal insufficient charge on watches equipped with that warning.
