Why a Citizen Eco-Drive Watch Stops or Runs Slowly—and How to Fix It

A stopped or slow Citizen Eco-Drive is often low on charge, but two-second jumps, power-save behavior, and irregular movement have different explanations. Learn what to check and when to contact Citizen service.

A stopped or slow-running Citizen Eco-Drive is often low on charge. Put the dial in direct sunlight and use the charging instructions for your exact model or caliber; there is no single charging time or warning interval that applies to every Eco-Drive. If charging as directed does not restore normal operation, contact Citizen service.

Start by identifying what the hands are doing

Different hand movements point to different causes. Before assuming the watch is broken, compare the symptom with the behavior described in its manual.

What you see What it may mean What to do
The watch has stopped completely The power reserve may be insufficient. Expose the dial to direct sunlight and follow the charging guidance for the exact model. Citizen’s stopped-watch FAQ
The second hand advances in two-second intervals On applicable models, this is the insufficient-charge warning. Recharge promptly. The time from warning to stopping depends on the caliber. Citizen’s Eco-Drive FAQ
The hands stop after the watch has been in darkness A model with power-save may have stopped the hands while continuing to keep time internally. Expose the watch to light again and check its manual for the feature and recovery behavior.
A hand moves irregularly or seems not to move The watch may have stopped and restarted, or the hand may serve a function other than timekeeping. Check the manual for your caliber and hand layout. On a chronograph, the central long hand may be the stopwatch hand; the timekeeping seconds hand may be on a subdial. Citizen’s FAQ on irregular movement

How to recharge a stopped Eco-Drive

  1. Find the model or caliber. Check the caseback and the watch’s paperwork. Use that identifier to locate the matching Citizen manual.
  2. Expose the dial to direct sunlight. Citizen advises sunlight for a watch whose power reserve may be insufficient. Follow the manual’s charging instructions and duration for your particular watch; required times vary by model. Citizen support FAQ
  3. Keep charging as directed. Do not assume a brief exposure has restored the reserve. Avoid excessive heat and follow the manual’s cautions. For example, Citizen’s F990 guidance cautions against charging that caliber at approximately 60°C (140°F) or higher; this is model-specific guidance, not a universal Eco-Drive temperature specification. Citizen F990 guidance
  4. Check the movement and displayed time. If the watch stopped and restarted, its displayed time may need correction. Use the caliber’s manual to set it correctly. Citizen’s movement FAQ
  5. Contact Citizen service if it still does not run. Citizen recommends contacting a service center when charging does not resolve a stopped watch. Do not assume a cell replacement or home repair is the right fix. Citizen support guidance

What the two-second warning means

On models that use it, a second hand moving in two-second steps signals insufficient charge. After the watch receives enough charge, the second hand should return to normal movement. Recharge promptly rather than waiting for the watch to stop.

The remaining time after the warning is caliber-specific. Citizen’s live support pages give different examples: the F158 page says that movement will deplete and stop if left uncharged for five days or longer after the warning begins; the A010 page gives three days. Those figures apply to those movements only, not to an unidentified Eco-Drive. Check the manual for your caliber. Citizen F158 and A010 support information

When stopped hands may be power-save behavior

Some Eco-Drive models have a power-save function. After a period without light, the hands can stop to conserve power even while the watch continues to keep time internally. When light returns, power generation resumes and the hands move again. Not every model has this feature, so confirm it in the manual rather than treating all stopped hands as power-save behavior. When charging is not enough

If the watch remains stopped after you follow the charging instructions for its exact model, contact a Citizen service center. Repair options can depend on whether parts are available, particularly for discontinued watches. Citizen service information
