How to Store and Browse Google Fit or Health Connect Exports Locally

Google Fit exports come from Takeout; Health Connect backups use Android settings and a selected cloud-storage app. Here’s how to save each and what you can browse.

Google Fit and Health Connect have different export paths: Google Fit data is downloaded through Google Takeout, while Health Connect’s built-in backup creates a ZIP through Android settings and a selected cloud-storage app. Google documents how to view Google Fit export files, but does not establish a general desktop viewer for Health Connect ZIP contents.

Choose the export path for your data

Service and path Requirement and destination What you can do with the archive Important limit
Google Fit through Google Takeout Sign in to the Google Account holding the Fit data; download the archive from a link or selected delivery destination. Google identifies HTML, CSV, and JSON formats and recommends viewing Takeout exports on a desktop computer. The archive may not include changes made after you request it but before it is created.
Health Connect scheduled export Android 14 or later; select an installed cloud-storage app and a location in it. Creates a ZIP on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule that can be imported back into Health Connect. Health records are not supported. Google’s instructions do not describe a direct computer export or a general desktop viewer for the ZIP’s contents.

If you already have an archive, identify which service created it before trying to open it. These are separate workflows, not interchangeable file formats.

Download and browse Google Fit data with Takeout

  1. Sign in to the Google Account that contains your Fit data and open Google Fit Help’s “How to download your Google data”.
  2. In Google Takeout, select the applicable Fit data, continue, choose an archive delivery method, and create the export.
  3. When Google says the archive is ready, download it from the email or destination you chose.
  4. Extract the archive on a desktop computer. Open archive_browser.html for information included with the archive about its contents and formats.
  5. Open HTML files in a standard browser. For CSV or JSON, use software that supports that format, such as a text editor, spreadsheet, or data tool. A spreadsheet may suit CSV, but JSON is structured data and is not necessarily meaningful when opened as a spreadsheet.

Google says direct download to a computer is easiest in most cases and recommends viewing Takeout exports on a desktop. Its Fit Help guidance is: “You can store your data anywhere that is safe and has enough room for it.”

If recent data is missing

A Takeout archive is a snapshot, not a live synchronized view. Google warns that changes made after you request an export but before the archive is created may not be included. If an expected entry is absent, request a fresh archive and check it after creation.

Back up and restore Health Connect data

Health Connect’s documented export is a scheduled backup workflow for Android 14 or later. It saves a ZIP using a selected cloud-storage app and location; Google’s instructions do not describe a built-in option that writes directly to a local computer.

  1. On the Android device, open Settings and search for Health Connect.
  2. Go to Manage data → Backup and restore → Scheduled export.
  3. Turn on the schedule and choose daily, weekly, or monthly.
  4. Select an installed cloud-storage app, choose a location, and save. Google identifies the ZIP’s default filename as Health Connect.zip; you can rename it.
  5. To restore the backup, return to Manage data → Backup and restore, choose Import data, and select the saved archive.

To remove an old export, delete its ZIP in the storage app where it was saved. Turning off scheduled export does not automatically delete files already created. Google’s Android Help page, “Back up & restore your Health Connect data,” states: “Export and import of health records isn’t supported at this time.”

Keep a private copy

Health exports can contain sensitive measurements. Google’s published Fit data types include blood glucose, blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and weight. Treat the archive as private even if you only intend to keep it for personal reference.

  • Choose a private account or access-controlled folder, and check whether the cloud location is shared with other people.
  • When you download a copy to a computer, store it in a folder other people cannot access and avoid leaving it on a public or shared computer.
  • If the computer does not have enough room, an external drive can be an optional additional place for a copy; it is not required for either export workflow.

For its examples of sensitive Fit measurements, see Google for Developers’ Health data types.

What viewers are documented?

Google Fit Takeout

Google documents HTML, CSV, and JSON among the Takeout formats and recommends desktop viewing. The archive’s archive_browser.html provides additional format information. Use an application that supports the specific file type; Google’s guidance does not mean every file will display as a readable spreadsheet.

Health Connect ZIP

Google documents how to create and import the ZIP, but its help page does not explain the archive’s internal file structure or name a general-purpose desktop viewer. Do not assume that it is CSV-based or that a particular computer application can browse it. The documented use is backup and restore within Health Connect.

For developers choosing an integration

Google’s developer pages recommend Health Connect for step tracking and mobile-first Android apps, and the Google Health API for cloud-based integrations. That platform guidance concerns new integrations; it does not change the personal export and backup steps above. See Android APIs | Google Fit and REST API | Google Fit.
