How to Transfer Garmin Watch Settings and Data to a New Watch

Sync the old watch, restore a compatible backup during setup, and check which account data and wallet details need separate attention.

To move settings to a replacement Garmin, sync the old watch to the same Garmin Connect account, create and sync a current backup if the model supports it, then pair the new watch in Garmin Connect and restore the compatible backup when prompted. Account-synced information and the watch backup are separate, so some details—especially Garmin Pay wallet information—need attention afterward.

How do I transfer everything from my old Garmin to my new Garmin watch?

There is no single transfer that copies every item. Garmin Connect syncs account data, while Backup & Restore copies selected watch settings and customizations. Use the steps below for a replacement watch staying on the same Garmin Connect account.

  1. Sync the old watch. Open Garmin Connect and sync, or connect the watch to Garmin Express with its USB data charging cable. Compatible watches may also sync over Wi-Fi. Garmin’s sync instructions explain the available methods.
  2. Check backup support and make a fresh backup. Backup & Restore is available only on select watches. Check the exact model’s owner’s manual under “System Settings.” On supported models, use “Back Up Now” if available, then sync the watch so the backup is uploaded; a newly created backup may remain pending until that sync completes.
  3. Pair the new watch in Garmin Connect. Follow the app’s setup prompts and sign in to the same account. If the watch is not detected, Garmin’s pairing guidance covers removing and adding a device, putting the watch in pairing mode, and confirming the code shown on the watch.
  4. Restore the compatible backup. Accept the restore offer during setup if it appears. Garmin also documents restoring a saved backup later through Garmin Connect or Garmin Express; follow the instructions for the specific model and software.
  5. Check account data and settings. Let the new watch sync, then review key settings and confirm the information you rely on is present. Re-create Garmin Pay wallet details if needed; they are not included in the backup.

Will my Garmin settings transfer to a new watch?

Only selected settings transfer, and only when the relevant watch supports Backup & Restore and the backup is compatible. Garmin’s examples of included items are activity and app lists, activity settings, watch-face customization, glances, Connect IQ Store content, saved alarms and timers, and paired sensors. Some watches offer additional backup choices for workouts, courses, and saved locations.

Garmin describes automatic daily backups on supported watches as well as a manual “Back Up Now” option. The most recent backup for a given device is retained, so make a current backup and sync it before relying on it for the replacement.

A restored backup does not roll back or backdate the replacement watch’s software. Garmin Support states: “Restoring settings from a previous backup will not back date software.”

What is not in the watch backup?

  • Garmin Pay wallet information is not backed up. You may need to set it up again, particularly if you remove the old watch from your account during a reset.
  • User profile details, heart-rate and power zones, and sleep schedule data are saved in Garmin Connect rather than in the device backup.
  • Connect IQ apps may need to be downloaded again when the model lacks the built-in backup feature and you use Garmin’s manual file-based method.

Will my Garmin activities and health data come over?

Activities and wellness information are distinct from the watch-configuration backup. For a watch replacement on the same account, sync the old watch before switching, then sync the new one. Garmin says profile data is applied to the watch from Garmin Connect, while training data transfers through Physio TrueUp. The backup itself is not an archive of all account history.

If you need a copy of an individual activity, Garmin Connect provides export options in the original device format (typically FIT), TCX, or GPX, along with other export and report options. Exporting an activity preserves or moves that activity file; it does not restore watch settings.

If you are changing Garmin Connect accounts

Moving to a different Garmin Connect account is a separate migration, not a routine part of replacing a watch. Garmin warns that not all data may transfer. Its full wellness-data migration instructions have conditions, including that the watch that recorded the data is active on the destination account; some documented flows also include account deletion. Review Garmin’s account-migration guidance carefully before proceeding, and do not delete an account as part of ordinary watch setup.

How do I restore a Garmin backup?

If setup did not offer the restore, use Garmin’s documented restore route in Garmin Connect or Garmin Express for your model. Menu labels and availability vary by watch. Before troubleshooting the replacement, check that the old watch synced after its backup was created; an unsynced backup may not be available to restore. Garmin retains only the most recent backup for each device.

If the watch does not offer Backup & Restore, consult its owner’s manual for model-specific transfer or file-copy instructions. Do not assume the built-in backup process applies to every Garmin watch.

Do I need to use Garmin Connect to set up my new watch?

Use Garmin Connect for the normal replacement workflow: it pairs the device, presents any compatible backup during setup, and syncs account information. Garmin Express is an alternative for syncing by computer over the watch’s USB data charging cable and is also documented for backup restoration. Cable connectors and supported functions vary by model; if phone Bluetooth setup and sync work, a wired connection is not inherently required.

What if I want to keep using both Garmin watches?

When adding another compatible watch, Garmin Connect may ask whether to make it the Primary Wearable or keep the existing watch in that role. Compatible devices can consolidate data, while the primary wearable resolves ties in daily metrics such as sleep, Body Battery, and steps. Choose the device you normally wear for those metrics, and check the selection if overlapping readings appear unexpected.

Common transfer problems

  • No backup option: verify support in the exact watch’s owner’s manual; the feature is not available on every model.
  • Backup missing: sync the old watch after creating the backup. A backup that has not synced may still be pending in Garmin Connect.
  • New watch will not pair: follow Garmin’s pairing steps for your phone platform and watch, including pairing mode and confirmation of the displayed code.
  • Phone sync is not working: try Garmin Express with a compatible USB data charging cable if supported for the watch.
  • Daily metrics seem inconsistent with two watches: review which compatible device is set as Primary Wearable.
