Choose the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro if you want a watch built around multisport training, built-in maps, Garmin’s longer manufacturer-stated smartwatch runtimes on AMOLED models, or inReach satellite and LTE communication. Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you use an iPhone and want Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem, cellular features, and Apple’s satellite functions. Android users should rule out Ultra 3: Apple lists it for compatible iPhones only. There is no universal winner in the published specifications, and the Garmin’s three configurations differ enough that you should compare the exact model, not just the product family.
Start with your phone
Phone compatibility is the quickest way to narrow the choice. Garmin lists the fēnix 8 Pro as compatible with iPhone and Android. Apple lists Ultra 3 for iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 26 or later. If you use Android, the Ultra 3 is not a viable option under Apple’s stated compatibility requirements. Garmin’s specifications; Apple’s technical specifications.

Compare battery life by exact model and mode
The Garmin figures below are manufacturer estimates in smartwatch mode, not guaranteed runtimes for every configuration or activity. Always-on display use has a separate, shorter estimate. Apple’s figures are also manufacturer estimates; workouts, GPS, cellular use, display settings, and other conditions can affect actual runtime.

Apple also states that Ultra 3 can provide up to 20 hours of continuous outdoor workout tracking in Low Power Mode with full GPS and heart-rate readings. Garmin’s variant-specific figures come from its fēnix 8 Pro comparison; Apple’s battery figures are in its September 9, 2025 launch announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- Multisport GPS smartwatch with built-in inReach technology for two-way satellite and LTE connectivity (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Rugged design with a bright 1.4" AMOLED touchscreen display, titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire lens and other premium materials
- In an emergency, inReach satellite technology allows you to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin ResponseSM coordination center for 24/7 assistance (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- LTE network connectivity lets you leave your phone behind; use your watch to exchange messages and make voice calls — plus let friends follow along with LiveTrack location sharing (30-second update rate) and location check-ins with the on-device Garmin Messenger app (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply)
- inReach technology allows you to send messages and get location check-ins over satellite when taking on an off-grid adventure (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
Match the watch to your training and navigation
Choose Garmin for a mapping- and training-centered setup
Garmin lists advanced training features, multisport and GPS capabilities, built-in mapping, and multiband GPS for the fēnix 8 Pro. That combination makes it a natural fit to consider if your routine depends on maps on the watch or you want a sports-focused feature set across activities.
Choose Apple if its workout and route tools fit your routine
Apple lists workout and training-load features, plus running, hiking, cycling, swimming, and multisport capabilities. Ultra 3 also includes a compass and waypoints, Backtrack, offline maps, and custom route creation; Apple identifies topographic park maps as U.S.-specific. The practical question is which navigation workflow and companion apps you already use—not simply which watch lists more feature names. See the manufacturers’ Garmin fēnix 8 Pro features and Apple Watch Ultra 3 specifications.
The published specifications establish feature lists, not which watch gives more accurate GPS or heart-rate readings in real use. No independent head-to-head performance result is established here, so treat claims of superior accuracy or battery performance as unproven unless backed by suitable comparative testing.

Understand the different off-grid communication models
Garmin: inReach-based LTE and satellite communication
Garmin lists LTE and satellite communication through inReach, including messaging and interactive SOS that connects to Garmin Response’s 24/7 coordination centre. These functions require an active inReach subscription, and coverage varies by location. Garmin also notes that local jurisdictions may regulate or prohibit satellite communication devices. Check service availability and applicable rules for your route before relying on the feature. Garmin fēnix 8 Pro details.
Apple: satellite SOS and related services under specific conditions
Apple says Ultra 3 can try Emergency SOS via satellite when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable. Its support guidance says to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon; the watch should be dry because water can affect the connection. Supported regions are country-specific and can change, and devices purchased in some countries or regions cannot use satellite connectivity. Apple says satellite SOS is free for two years after activation. Check Apple’s satellite feature requirements and region guidance for your device and destination.
These are not interchangeable services: their coverage, activation, subscriptions, and capabilities differ. Neither should be treated as guaranteed rescue or as a substitute for checking the communications and emergency options appropriate to your trip. Apple’s two-year free period is stated in its 2025 announcement; confirm current terms and availability before depending on any service.

Consider fit, water use, and total cost
Fit and display are separate Garmin decisions
The fēnix 8 Pro line includes 47 mm AMOLED, 51 mm AMOLED, and 51 mm MicroLED configurations. Case size, display type, weight, and estimated runtime vary, so compare the exact version you would wear. The MicroLED model’s stated battery estimate is not the same as the 51 mm AMOLED’s.
Use the manufacturers’ exact water terminology
Garmin lists a 10 ATM rating and dive-related capability. Apple lists 100 m water resistance and recreational diving to 40 m under stated standards. Those descriptions do not by themselves establish identical permitted activities; follow each manufacturer’s guidance for the specific use you have in mind. Garmin specifications; Apple technical specifications.
Check live local pricing and any service fees
A comparable current price for both watches is not established here. Garmin’s U.S. comparison page showed $1,299.99 for one 51 mm AMOLED configuration when retrieved in 2026; that is a model- and region-specific listing, not a stable street price or a direct comparison with Apple. Check current pricing for the exact case and display in your market. Also include any required inReach subscription in the cost of Garmin’s communication features.
Quick Recap
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro if you use Android, prioritize built-in mapping and multisport training features, want the longer stated smartwatch runtime of the 51 mm AMOLED configuration, or specifically need Garmin’s subscription-based inReach communication model.
- Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you meet Apple’s iPhone and iOS requirements, prefer Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem and cellular features, and want its satellite functions where supported.
- Decide by configuration, not headline battery claims if fit and charging frequency matter: compare the three Garmin case/display variants against Apple’s use-mode estimates, keeping in mind that the manufacturers’ figures are not directly comparable real-world test results.
