If your Apple Watch automatically opens music or podcast controls whenever audio starts, turn off Media Apps auto-launch. On current watchOS, go to Settings > Smart Stack > Live Activities > Media Apps > Auto-Launch, then choose Off.
If your Apple Watch keeps opening music or podcast controls when audio starts, turn off media auto-launch:
- Open Settings on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Smart Stack.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Tap Media Apps.
- Under Auto-Launch, select Off.
You can usually change the same setting on your iPhone in the Watch app: My Watch > Smart Stack > Live Activities > Media Apps > Auto-Launch > Off. Apple’s current documentation describes music and other ongoing activities as Live Activities that appear in the Smart Stack and whose presentation can be configured in Smart Stack settings. See Apple’s Smart Stack and Live Activities guide for the current terminology.
What this setting changes
Turning off Media Apps auto-launch stops the full media-control interface from automatically taking over the screen when music, podcasts, or other supported audio begins playing. It does not stop the audio, pause playback, remove the Now Playing function, or prevent you from controlling media manually.

You can still open Now Playing by launching the app, tapping a Now Playing complication, or selecting the Now Playing media widget in the Smart Stack while audio is playing. Now Playing can control playback on the Apple Watch, iPhone, HomePod, and other supported destinations. Apple explains these manual controls in its Now Playing guide.
If your Apple Watch uses an older menu
Apple has moved and renamed this control in different watchOS releases. If you do not see Smart Stack > Live Activities > Media Apps, look for one of these older paths:
- On the watch: Settings > General > Wake Screen > Auto-Launch Audio Apps
- On the iPhone: Watch app > My Watch > General > Wake Screen > Auto-Launch Audio Apps
- On some releases: Settings > General > Auto-Launch > Auto-Launch Audio Apps
Set Auto-Launch Audio Apps to Off. The older option performs the same basic job: it prevents an audio app or Now Playing-style controls from automatically appearing when audio is playing. Depending on your watchOS version, search Settings for Live Activities, Media Apps, or Auto-Launch.

Now Playing still appears: identify which behavior you are seeing
It appears as a Smart Stack item or Live Activity
On newer watchOS versions, media may appear in the Smart Stack without launching the complete Now Playing app. Go to Settings > Smart Stack > Live Activities and review the media-app behavior there. The exact controls can vary by watchOS release; the current Apple documentation is the best reference for the labels on your version.

Disabling auto-launch does not block manual access. Tapping a Now Playing widget, complication, or app icon will still open the controls. This is expected and allows you to keep playback control available without having it appear automatically.
You are near a HomePod
Now Playing may appear automatically when you are near a HomePod that is playing audio. That behavior is distinct from ordinary iPhone media auto-launch. Review Smart Stack > Live Activities and the relevant media settings rather than trying to remove the Now Playing app.

The watch returns to Music, Podcasts, or Now Playing after waking
This may be a Return to Clock setting rather than an auto-launch problem. On the watch, open Settings > General > Return to Clock. Choose the desired behavior for Music, Now Playing, Podcasts, and any other listed apps.
Depending on the option available for your watchOS version, you can tell the watch to return to the clock instead of reopening the previously used media app after the display becomes inactive. Apple documents these per-app wake and return behaviors in its turn-on and wake Apple Watch guide.

Workout audio autoplay is controlled separately. If music or podcasts start automatically when you begin a workout, check the Workout app’s media-playback settings. Turning off Now Playing or Media Apps auto-launch does not necessarily disable workout media autoplay. Apple’s workout audio guidance covers that separate behavior.

How to open Now Playing manually after disabling auto-launch
You have several supported options:
- Open the Now Playing app from the app list.
- Tap a Now Playing complication if one is installed on the watch face.
- While media is playing, open the Smart Stack and tap the Now Playing media widget.
From there, you can pause or resume playback, skip tracks or episodes, adjust volume with the Digital Crown, and switch between available audio destinations. Disabling automatic presentation changes when the controls appear; it does not remove these controls.

- It does not permanently delete Now Playing. The built-in function remains available for manual use.
- It does not stop music or podcasts. Playback continues according to the settings of the iPhone, Apple Watch, HomePod, or audio app.
- It does not disable every media-related Smart Stack feature. Live Activities, widgets, and manual media access may have separate controls.
- It does not necessarily change workout autoplay. Workout media settings are separate.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Use Settings > Smart Stack > Live Activities > Media Apps > Auto-Launch > Off if you are running a current watchOS version.
- If that path is missing, look for Auto-Launch Audio Apps under General > Wake Screen or General > Auto-Launch.
- If the watch reopens a media app after sleeping, change Settings > General > Return to Clock.
- If audio begins only during workouts, change the media setting inside Workout.
- If media appears near a HomePod, review the Smart Stack and Live Activities controls.
- Remember that tapping a media widget or complication will still open Now Playing by design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Now Playing stop music or podcasts from playing?
No. Turning off Media Apps auto-launch only prevents the controls from opening automatically. Music and podcasts can still play, and you can open Now Playing manually from the app list, a complication, or the Smart Stack.
Can I still use Now Playing after turning off auto-launch?
No. Now Playing remains available. Open the Now Playing app, tap its complication, or select its media widget in the Smart Stack while audio is playing.

Why can’t I find the Media Apps setting on my Apple Watch?
On current watchOS, check Settings > Smart Stack > Live Activities > Media Apps > Auto-Launch. On older versions, look for Settings > General > Wake Screen > Auto-Launch Audio Apps or a similarly named option under General > Auto-Launch.
Why does my Apple Watch keep returning to Music or Podcasts?
Change Settings > General > Return to Clock and select the preferred behavior for Music, Podcasts, or Now Playing. Returning to a media app after the screen wakes is a separate setting from auto-launch.
The Bottom Line
