How to Use a Chronograph to Measure Heart Rate and BPM

A chronograph measures elapsed time; it does not detect heartbeats. To use one to check your pulse, feel and count your beats while the chronograph runs, then convert that timed count to beats per minute (BPM). If your watch has a pulsometer scale, you can instead count the fixed number of beats printed on its dial or bezel and read an approximate BPM value directly.

How to measure your pulse with an ordinary chronograph

  1. Rest first if you want a resting reading. Sit quietly for a few minutes before checking your pulse. A reading taken after activity or during strong emotion may differ from your resting pulse. Mayo Clinic’s pulse-taking guide notes that activity, emotions, medicines, health conditions, pregnancy, and other factors can affect the result.
  2. Find your wrist pulse. Turn one palm upward. On the inner wrist, use the tips of the index and middle fingers of your other hand on the thumb side, between the wrist bone and tendon. Press lightly; pressing too hard can make the pulse harder to feel. Do not use your thumb. MedlinePlus’ wrist-pulse instructions also describe this method.
  3. Start the chronograph and count each beat you feel. For a straightforward measurement, count for 60 seconds. Mayo Clinic recommends a full-minute count unless your healthcare team advises another method. Cleveland Clinic describes a 30-second count as an option; Mayo Clinic and MedlinePlus also describe a 15-second count.
  4. Convert the count to BPM. Multiply the number of beats by 60, then divide by the number of seconds counted. For 30 seconds, double the count; for 15 seconds, multiply by four. For example, 18 beats in 15 seconds works out to 72 BPM. That is an arithmetic example, not a clinical result.

If your pulse feels irregular, count for the full minute rather than extrapolating from a short interval. A home pulse count is not a diagnosis; ask your healthcare team to interpret an unusual or concerning result.

How to use a watch’s pulsometer scale

Check the dial or bezel for a pulsometer or pulse-meter scale. A regular chronograph without that scale can time your count, but it cannot give the direct scale reading described here.

  1. Find the fixed beat count printed for the scale on your specific watch. Do not assume every pulsometer uses the same count.
  2. Start the chronograph as you begin feeling and counting your pulse.
  3. Stop the chronograph on the final beat in the specified count.
  4. Read the BPM value where the chronograph hand meets the pulsometer scale. Treat it as approximate, not exact or diagnostic.

Hamilton Watch’s Base 30 pulsometer instructions say to count until the 30th beat, stop the chronograph, and read the result on the scale. The manual’s instructional example is 75 beats per minute. Citizen Watch’s pulse-meter instructions likewise say to use the designated count shown on the watch’s dial or bezel; its scale provides an approximate pulse rate in less time.

How to interpret the number

For context, Cleveland Clinic gives 60 to 100 BPM as the usual resting pulse range for adults. The American Heart Association’s heart-rate guidance gives the same general range for an adult who is sitting or lying down, calm, and feeling well. This is general context, not a personal diagnosis or a target that applies to everyone.

The American Heart Association advises contacting a healthcare professional when your rate is notably slower or faster than usual, especially if you feel weak, dizzy, or faint. If a suddenly very high or very low rate occurs with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting, seek emergency help.

What a chronograph reading can and cannot tell you

Manual counting records the pulse you can feel during a particular interval. The pulsometer scale converts a specified count into an approximate rate. Neither method, by itself, measures an electrocardiogram (ECG) or diagnoses a heart condition. For repeated tracking, a wearable heart-rate monitor may be convenient, but device readings have limitations. Cleveland Clinic explains how heart-rate monitors work and cautions that they should not replace medical care. Mayo Clinic also notes that smartwatches may not always be accurate, especially with some heart conditions; ask your healthcare team whether a device is appropriate for you.
