A GPS time adjustment corrects the time within the zone already selected; a time-zone adjustment identifies or selects the zone at your new location. If reception succeeds but the local hour is still wrong, check the zone and daylight-saving-time setting as well.
Procedures differ by Astron caliber. Find the caliber code on the caseback and use the matching Seiko instruction manual before following button instructions.

First, tell a time adjustment from a time-zone adjustment
A time-only adjustment corrects the displayed time in the zone the watch already has set. It does not necessarily change that zone when you cross a border. For travel, use the watch’s time-zone adjustment procedure, which identifies or lets you select the time zone for your location.
Seiko’s 8X22 manual puts it plainly: “The watch does not automatically display the local time just by being moved.” GPS reception can therefore succeed while the watch continues to show the time for its previous zone. The 8X22 manual lists reception times of 6 seconds to 1 minute for time adjustment and 30 seconds to 2 minutes for time-zone adjustment; these are caliber-specific figures, not a promise for every Astron.

Work through these checks in order
1. Identify the caliber
Read the caliber code on the caseback, then open that exact guide through Seiko’s instruction finder. Astron controls and button sequences vary: the 5X53 procedure, for example, should not be assumed to apply to an 8X22 or 8X82.
2. Check the charge
GPS reception draws substantial energy. If the charge indicator is low, reception may not start. Seiko’s cited guidance says to expose the dial to light until the indicator is at least in the middle position, or full where that caliber’s guide uses those labels. Use the charging table for your caliber rather than guessing a number of hours.
3. Make sure flight mode is off
Flight mode prevents GPS reception. If you enabled it on an aircraft or in another restricted setting, return the watch to normal mode using the instructions for your caliber.

4. Try reception under open sky
Move outdoors to a place with a clear view of the sky and follow your caliber’s positioning instructions. The 5X53 procedure, for example, says to hold the dial upward. Buildings and overhead cover can obstruct reception; being outside improves the opportunity but does not guarantee a successful fix.
5. On a trip, start time-zone adjustment
Use the time-zone adjustment procedure in the correct manual, not only the time-adjustment procedure. As one model-specific example, Seiko’s cited 5X53 steps say to hold Button B for three seconds to start time-zone adjustment, outdoors under open sky. Do not use that button sequence on another caliber unless its own guide specifies it.
6. If reception succeeds, verify the zone and DST
Check that the selected time zone matches your location. A time-only correction leaves the zone unchanged, and a location near a time-zone boundary may be identified as an adjacent zone. If the watch selected the wrong one, use the manual’s method for choosing the correct zone.

Daylight saving time is a separate setting on the cited 8X22 and 8X82 calibers. Seiko’s 8X22 manual says, “DST (Daylight Saving Time) is not automatically set. Carry out the setting manually.” Check the guide for your caliber and set DST as appropriate for your location and date.

Diagnose the problem by what the watch does
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Reception does not start | Low charge or flight mode | Charge the watch and return it to normal mode, following the caliber manual. |
| Reception starts but shows “N” | Reception conditions may be unsuitable | Move to a more open location and retry using the manual’s positioning instructions. |
| Reception shows “Y,” but local time is wrong | The stored time zone may still be the home zone, or DST may be wrong | Run time-zone adjustment if needed, then check the zone and DST settings. |
| The time is one hour off | DST status | Verify the DST setting before concluding that GPS reception failed. |
| The watch selected a neighboring zone | Your location may be near a time-zone boundary | Manually select the appropriate zone if the caliber’s guide permits it. |
| Automatic adjustment seems absent | Light exposure and the watch’s use pattern | Seiko describes automatic reception in relation to these factors; it is not continuous. If the watch is kept from light, it can retry around the time of its last successful manual time or zone adjustment. |
When to contact Seiko service
If charging, flight mode, reception location, time zone, and DST checks do not resolve the issue, consult the exact caliber manual and contact Seiko or an authorized service provider. Seiko’s 8X22 manual advises consulting the retailer if reception is repeatedly interrupted in low-temperature, low-charge conditions. These symptoms alone do not establish that a particular component has failed.
