To use it, enable Detect Gym Equipment on the watch, then hold the watch within a few centimeters of the machine’s marked Apple Watch reader. After pairing, start and stop the workout using the machine’s controls.
What Apple GymKit does
GymKit is Apple’s connection system for supported cardio equipment. It links an Apple Watch with a compatible treadmill, elliptical, indoor bike, or other supported machine so the watch and console can share workout information.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Depending on the machine and its software, GymKit may exchange distance, heart rate, workout start and stop status, and equipment-specific measurements such as speed, incline, resistance, or revolutions. The exact data varies by equipment implementation; GymKit does not guarantee that every compatible machine transfers every metric.
GymKit is not a standalone app. It is also different from pairing Bluetooth headphones, connecting an iPhone to a treadmill, using a manufacturer’s companion app, or subscribing to Apple Fitness+. Generic Bluetooth support alone does not mean that a machine supports GymKit.

How to check whether equipment supports GymKit
Look for one of these signs on the console:
- Connects to Apple Watch or Connect to Apple Watch wording.
- Apple Watch or GymKit branding.
- A marked contactless reader, usually near the display, phone shelf, or control panel.
Compatible equipment can include treadmills, ellipticals, and indoor bikes, but compatibility is normally model- and console-specific. A manufacturer may offer GymKit on one console SKU while omitting it from another, or make it an optional upgrade. For example, Life Fitness documents GymKit requirements for particular consoles, while True Fitness lists GymKit as an optional upgrade on an Envision II configuration.
If a machine has no Apple Watch label or contactless reader, assume that GymKit is unavailable unless the gym or manufacturer confirms otherwise. Do not buy a watch or choose a gym based only on a “smart,” “connected,” or Bluetooth label.

- Wear a powered-on Apple Watch.
- Confirm that the specific machine supports Apple Watch or GymKit.
- Turn on Detect Gym Equipment by opening Settings → Workout → Detect Gym Equipment on the watch.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
- If pairing is unreliable, turn off Low Power Mode temporarily.
- Wake the machine’s console and select its workout mode if necessary.
Apple’s current instructions use the setting name Detect Gym Equipment. The same option may also be available through the iPhone’s Watch app in the watch’s workout settings.
How to connect Apple Watch to gym equipment
- Find a compatible machine. Check for the Apple Watch/GymKit label and locate the contactless reader.
- Wake the console. Some machines show the pairing prompt only after the display is active or a workout mode has been selected.
- Hold the watch near the reader. Place the watch within a few centimeters of the marked area, with its display facing the reader.
- Wait for confirmation. A beep, haptic response, watch icon, or on-screen pairing message should indicate that the connection succeeded.
- Start the session from the machine. Press Start on the equipment rather than relying on the watch alone.
- Finish from the machine. Press Stop on the equipment. Confirm or save the workout on the watch if prompted.
Apple’s full procedure is documented in its Apple Watch guide to using gym equipment.

Manual connection when automatic detection fails
If automatic detection does not start, open the Workout app on the Apple Watch first. Then hold the watch near the machine’s contactless reader and follow the pairing prompt.
This manual method can help when automatic gym-equipment detection is disabled or when the console does not recognize the watch immediately. Keep the watch still for several seconds and aim the display directly at the reader.

GymKit can allow the watch and equipment to exchange information such as:
- Distance.
- Heart rate.
- Workout start and stop state.
- Equipment-specific data, including speed, incline, resistance, or revolutions where supported.
The machine’s figures and the Apple Watch’s figures may not match exactly. Differences can result from machine calibration, belt movement, sensors, user profile settings, stride assumptions, or the type of equipment. Missing metrics do not automatically mean that the watch is defective.
The exact fields depend on the machine’s GymKit hardware and software. Apple’s GymKit documentation describes the exchange in general terms rather than promising an identical data set for every console.

Using GymKit with Apple Fitness+
GymKit and Apple Fitness+ are separate features. Fitness+ is Apple’s guided workout subscription, while GymKit is the connection layer between an Apple Watch and compatible equipment. Fitness+ workouts can be completed without GymKit, and many do not require equipment at all.

Apple GymKit troubleshooting
The machine has no Apple Watch logo or reader
It may not support GymKit, even if it has Bluetooth or a manufacturer app. Check another machine, ask gym staff whether that specific console has GymKit enabled, and verify the model in the manufacturer’s documentation.
There is a reader, but no pairing prompt
- Confirm Settings → Workout → Detect Gym Equipment is enabled.
- Open the Workout app manually.
- Hold the watch directly over the marked reader with the display facing it.
- Move it slightly around the marked NFC area and keep it still for a few seconds.
- Check that another device is not already connected to the console.
- Restart the watch or console if the gym permits it.
- Try a different GymKit-equipped machine.
It worked before but no longer connects automatically
Toggle Detect Gym Equipment off and on again. On the watch, use Settings → Workout → Detect Gym Equipment. You can also change the setting in the iPhone’s Watch app.

Also check Bluetooth and make sure Low Power Mode is off. Life Fitness recommends these steps for automatic-connection failures and has reported similar user complaints after watchOS 26 updates across multiple brands. That is a manufacturer-reported issue, not confirmation of a universal Apple bug. See the Life Fitness troubleshooting guidance.
The watch opens Workout, but the machine does not connect
Wake the console, select the intended workout, and try holding the watch over the reader again. Keep the display facing the contactless area rather than tapping a random part of the console. If possible, test another compatible machine to determine whether the fault follows the watch or stays with one console.
The machine connects but metrics are missing
Stop and reconnect before starting another session. Confirm that the watch shows a connected state, start the workout from the machine, and check whether the machine’s implementation supports the missing metric. If only one console has the problem, ask gym staff to verify its GymKit configuration.
The connection drops during exercise
Keep the watch close to the console during initial pairing, check its battery level, and avoid Low Power Mode while troubleshooting. Reconnect before restarting the workout. After a dropped connection, check whether the watch saved a partial workout before creating a replacement session; a disconnected workout cannot always be merged or repaired.
Is GymKit worth using?
GymKit is useful when your gym has clearly marked compatible cardio equipment and you want machine-derived data in the Apple ecosystem without creating a manufacturer account. It is particularly convenient when you want the equipment to start and stop the Apple Watch workout.

| External heart-rate accessory | Adding heart-rate data to supported apps | Does not recreate full machine-to-watch GymKit integration |
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an iPhone nearby?
GymKit pairing is performed between the Apple Watch and the compatible console. The watch’s normal workout and health-data behavior still applies, but the GymKit connection itself is not the same as pairing an iPhone to gym equipment.
Does GymKit save the workout to Apple Health?
GymKit is designed to exchange workout information with the Apple Watch, which can then record the session within Apple’s workout and health ecosystem. The exact saved metrics depend on the watch, equipment, and connection result; check the completed workout afterward rather than assuming every console field was stored.
Recommended Free Tools
Does GymKit work with strength machines?
GymKit is primarily encountered on supported cardio equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, and indoor bikes. Do not assume that a cable machine, weight machine, or other strength equipment supports it unless the console specifically displays Apple Watch/GymKit support.
What if my gym has the right equipment brand but no Apple Watch logo?
Brand alone is not enough. Ask whether the exact machine and console have GymKit hardware and software enabled. A compatible brand can sell or install consoles with different feature sets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use GymKit with any Bluetooth treadmill?
No. GymKit requires the machine’s specific Apple Watch integration and contactless-reader hardware; generic Bluetooth support is not sufficient.
Do I need Apple Fitness+ to use GymKit?
No. GymKit and Fitness+ are separate features. You can use GymKit for equipment synchronization without subscribing to Fitness+.
Why are my Apple Watch and treadmill distances different?
Calibration, sensors, belt movement, user settings, and the machine’s data implementation can produce different readings. GymKit does not guarantee identical values.
