Its squircle case, orange-accented action button, siren, night mode and rugged outdoor positioning make the comparison unavoidable. Samsung’s strongest arguments are different: Android compatibility, a circular display, dual-band GPS, Samsung Health integration and substantially longer advertised battery life.
It is a strong choice for a Samsung Galaxy owner with a large enough wrist. It is a reasonable—though more limited—choice for other Android users. It is not an option for iPhone owners at all, because the Galaxy Watch Ultra cannot pair with iOS. And in 2026, the original model only makes sense when it is substantially cheaper than Samsung’s newer Galaxy Watch Ultra2.

What this review covers
This review concerns the original Galaxy Watch Ultra released in 2024, not the 2025 refresh or the 2026 Galaxy Watch Ultra2. The 2025 version retains the core design and platform while adding Titanium Blue and increased storage in Samsung’s product messaging. The Ultra2 is a separate, newer model with an 800mAh battery, Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, a 5,000-nit display and 498 × 498 resolution.

Verdict: a serious Android Ultra, not an Apple Watch replacement
Samsung’s first rugged Ultra smartwatch is best understood as a premium Android alternative shaped by Apple’s category playbook. It is not merely an Apple Watch Ultra clone: the circular AMOLED screen, Wear OS app ecosystem, Samsung Health features and Android support produce a meaningfully different experience. But Samsung clearly borrowed much of the visual and functional language that made Apple’s Ultra line distinctive.
Buy the original Galaxy Watch Ultra if you use a Samsung Galaxy phone, want multi-day endurance, prefer a circular screen, regularly train outdoors and can comfortably wear a 47mm watch. Skip it if you use an iPhone, have a small wrist, expect Samsung’s rotating bezel, need the newest outdoor hardware or would pay close to the original US MSRP of $649.99.
Where does Apple end and Samsung start?
The design resemblance is not imaginary. Both watches use a premium, oversized adventure-watch concept with rugged materials, a prominent customizable button, emergency-oriented features, bold orange accents, specialized bands and a low-light display treatment. Samsung’s Quick Button, siren and night-mode presentation invite direct comparison with Apple’s Action button, siren and Wayfinder-style outdoor identity.
Recommended Free Tools
Calling the Galaxy Watch Ultra a copy, however, misses the practical difference. Samsung places those ideas around a circular display and inside Wear OS, while Apple uses a rectangular display and keeps the Apple Watch experience tightly tied to the iPhone. The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s squircle outer case surrounding a round screen is Samsung’s own design contribution. It looks less like a conventional round Galaxy Watch than earlier models, but the display still feels more like a traditional watch face than Apple’s rectangle.
The fair conclusion is that Samsung adopted Apple’s Ultra category language and added its own ecosystem and interface choices. It is derivative in positioning, but not identical in use.
Design, materials and everyday comfort
The 2024 Ultra comes in one size: 47mm. Its case measures approximately 47.1 × 47.4 × 12.1mm and weighs about 60.5g before the strap. The titanium construction, sapphire crystal and claimed IP68, 10ATM and MIL-STD-810H protection give it the physical presence expected from a rugged watch.
That presence is also the central comfort problem. A large, heavy watch can be durable and impressive while remaining a poor daily-wear device. It may catch on jacket cuffs, interfere with keyboard use, feel awkward during high-repetition sports and become uncomfortable for side sleepers. The supplied hands-on review found the watch oversized and uncomfortable for sleep, even for a reviewer accustomed to an Apple Watch Ultra. That is one reviewer’s experience rather than a universal result, but it highlights a real consequence of the fixed 47mm size.
Sleep tracking is especially worth considering before purchase. Samsung promotes sleep monitoring and coaching, but those features are less useful if the case and Marine Band are too bulky to wear overnight. Try the watch on if your wrist is small or if you normally prefer compact watches.
The Ultra also uses a proprietary band attachment system. Do not assume that ordinary Galaxy Watch bands will automatically fit. Budget for compatible Ultra bands if you want a different material or a lighter setup.
Display and controls
The 1.5-inch circular AMOLED display has a 480 × 480 resolution, sapphire crystal protection and a quoted peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. The circular format is one of the watch’s clearest advantages for buyers who prefer a conventional watch silhouette. Samsung’s high-brightness mode is designed for outdoor readability, although peak brightness is not the same as sustained brightness in every situation.
Touch navigation, programmable shortcuts and gestures make the interface flexible, and the Quick Button is well suited to launching workouts or another selected function. The physical buttons and rugged case are more practical for outdoor use than a minimalist touchscreen-only design.

The missing feature is Samsung’s traditional hardware rotating bezel. That interaction has long been one of the most distinctive reasons to choose a Galaxy Watch. The Ultra uses touch and buttons instead, so buyers who specifically want the satisfying ring-based scrolling experience should consider the Galaxy Watch8 Classic instead. Samsung’s December 2025 US MSRP reference lists the Watch8 Classic at $499.99 for Bluetooth and $549.99 for LTE, though live prices and promotions vary.
Compatibility: check your phone before anything else
The phone ecosystem determines whether the Galaxy Watch Ultra is a good buy—or usable at all.
- Samsung Galaxy phone: This is the best match. You get the deepest Samsung Health and device integration.
- Other Android phone: The watch supports Android 11 or later, but some important health functions are unavailable.
- iPhone: Do not buy it. Samsung states that the Galaxy Watch Ultra is incompatible with iOS.
Samsung’s compatibility documentation says that ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and sleep-apnea features require a Samsung Galaxy phone. The watch itself may pair with a non-Samsung Android phone, but “works with Android” does not mean that every feature works everywhere.
Region, carrier, account, app and regulatory availability can also affect health functions. Check the current requirements for your country and phone before treating any advertised feature as part of your purchase decision. LTE models add cellular flexibility, but they still depend on carrier support and an appropriate plan.
Health tracking: broad capabilities with important qualifications
The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s BioActive Sensor combines optical sensing, electrical heart-signal sensing and bioelectrical impedance analysis. That hardware supports a wide set of wellness and health features, including heart-rate monitoring, ECG, body composition, sleep tracking, Energy Score, sleep coaching, blood-pressure measurement and sleep-apnea detection where supported.
Those features are useful reasons to choose Samsung, particularly if you already use Samsung Health. They should not be confused with universal medical diagnosis or guaranteed accuracy.
ECG, irregular rhythm and blood pressure
ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications are restricted by phone compatibility and regional approvals. Blood-pressure measurement requires calibration with a separate cuff, and readings should not be treated as a replacement for clinical assessment. Samsung’s own product and support pages should be checked for the current regional requirements.
Body composition and Energy Score are better understood as trend and wellness tools. They can help organize information about activity, sleep and recovery, but a single score should not dictate medical or training decisions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSleep apnea and newer wellness features
Sleep-apnea detection, sleep coaching and features such as the AGEs Index may depend on the phone, region, required app, account and applicable regulatory status. Their presence on the watch does not mean the feature is available to every buyer or that it can diagnose a condition independently.
The distinction is simple: the watch has impressive sensing hardware, but software availability and medical usefulness are separate questions.
Accuracy
The available hands-on review reported occasional implausible high-heart-rate readings on the tested unit. That is worth mentioning as a failure report, but it is not enough evidence to conclude that inaccurate readings are widespread or that the Galaxy Watch Ultra is categorically worse than competing watches. Controlled comparative testing would be needed for that claim.

Fitness, GPS and outdoor use
Dual-band GPS is intended to improve positioning in difficult environments such as dense urban areas. The Ultra also emphasizes trail, cycling, training, triathlon and multisport use through Samsung Health. Its rugged construction and 10ATM claim make it an obvious candidate for outdoor workouts and water-related activities within the manufacturer’s stated limits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a runner, cyclist or triathlete already using Samsung Health, the Ultra provides a credible high-end training platform. Its large screen is easy to read, and the dedicated button is more practical when fingers are wet or movement makes touchscreen controls awkward.
Do not infer superior navigation from dual-band GPS alone. Rugged specifications prove resistance claims, not better route handling, heart-rate accuracy or emergency communications. The available review provides no controlled comparison establishing that Samsung’s GPS is more accurate than Apple’s.
Apple’s current Apple Watch Ultra 3 has a stronger software story for some outdoor users: offline maps, custom routes, Backtrack, cycling features, multisport tools, dive-computer functionality through Oceanic+ and satellite communications for emergency and messaging functions. Samsung’s native experience is capable, but Apple’s outdoor services are more mature in these areas.
Battery life: Samsung’s largest practical advantage
Samsung advertises the original Galaxy Watch Ultra for up to 100 hours in Power Saving Mode and up to 48 hours in Exercise Power Saving Mode. Those are maximum figures tied to named modes, not a promise of 100 hours of ordinary smartwatch use.
| Scenario | Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024) | Apple Watch Ultra 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Advertised maximum or normal use | Up to 100 hours in Power Saving Mode | Up to 42 hours in normal use |
| Reduced-power mode | Up to 48 hours in Exercise Power Saving Mode | Up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode |
| Full-GPS workout claim | Depends on settings and mode; Samsung’s maximum headline is not a universal GPS-workout figure | Up to 14 hours with full GPS and heart-rate readings |
Always-on display, LTE, GPS workouts, continuous sensors, notifications, brightness, music and sleep tracking all change endurance. Power-saving modes may also reduce or disable functions that motivated you to buy an Ultra watch in the first place.
Even with those caveats, Samsung has the stronger endurance proposition on paper. Apple’s figures are lower in absolute terms but more clearly separated between normal use, Low Power Mode and a full-GPS workout estimate. Choose Samsung if charging frequency is a major frustration; choose Apple if its ecosystem and outdoor connectivity matter more than multi-day endurance.
What Samsung sacrificed
- Size: There is no smaller Ultra, and 47mm will not suit every wrist.
- Weight: Approximately 60.5g before the strap is substantial for sleep and office wear.
- Rotating bezel: The signature Galaxy Watch hardware interaction is absent.
- Compatibility: iPhones are excluded, and non-Samsung Android phones lose key health functions.
- Band flexibility: The Ultra’s attachment system is not automatically interchangeable with ordinary Galaxy Watch bands.
- Original-model value: The 2024 model is difficult to justify at or near its $649.99 US MSRP when newer Ultra hardware is available.
- Originality: Samsung’s visual and feature similarities to Apple’s Ultra line make it harder to present this as a wholly category-defining design.
Galaxy Watch Ultra versus Apple Watch Ultra 3
This is primarily an ecosystem decision, not a neutral hardware shootout.
Choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra for Android compatibility, a circular display, Samsung Health, Google Play and Android notifications, dual-band GPS, and longer advertised endurance. Samsung’s watch is also the more natural choice for a Galaxy phone owner who wants Samsung’s health and device ecosystem.

Choose the Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you own an iPhone or prioritize Apple Health and Fitness integration, satellite communication, offline maps, custom routes, Backtrack, mature cycling and multisport tools, or dive features. Apple lists up to 42 hours of normal use, up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode and up to 14 hours of outdoor workout with full GPS and heart-rate readings.
There is no meaningful “best” choice across both platforms. An iPhone owner should buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3 because the Samsung watch cannot pair with iOS. An Android owner cannot simply substitute an Apple Watch.

What changes in 2026?
Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 in 2026. It has materially different hardware: an 800mAh battery, Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, a display rated up to 5,000 nits and 498 × 498 resolution, plus newer outdoor functions such as Trail Run details, elevation and climbing data, and hydration guidance.
That makes the Ultra2 the direct upgrade path for buyers who want Samsung’s newest rugged watch. The original Ultra remains sensible when discounted substantially, when its existing feature set is sufficient, or when a retailer’s price is well below the newer model’s effective price. Compare actual sale, trade-in and carrier prices on the day of purchase rather than assuming the MSRP is the amount you will pay.
The Galaxy Watch8 Classic is the better alternative for buyers who want a conventional Samsung design and rotating bezel but do not need the Ultra’s 47mm titanium case, rugged positioning or maximum battery.
Who should buy the original Galaxy Watch Ultra?
Best for Samsung Galaxy owners
This is the watch’s clearest audience. You receive the fullest Samsung Health experience, familiar Android notifications and app support, and the best chance of benefiting from its health ecosystem.
Good for other Android users—with a checklist
Android 11 or later makes the watch viable beyond Samsung phones. Confirm first that the functions you care about do not require a Galaxy phone. If ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications or sleep-apnea detection are central to your decision, a non-Samsung Android phone is a poor match.
Best for battery-conscious buyers
The original Ultra’s battery claims are a major advantage over Apple’s current Ultra generation, provided you understand the mode labels and accept the trade-off between power saving and functionality.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Not for small wrists or discreet sleep wear
The fixed 47mm case is the decisive physical limitation. If you want a compact, light watch or regularly sleep in a watch, test the fit before buying.
Not for iPhone owners
There is no workaround that turns the Galaxy Watch Ultra into an Apple Watch substitute. iPhone owners should look at the Apple Watch Ultra 3 instead.
For serious outdoor safety, compare services—not just toughness
The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s durability and GPS hardware are useful, but Apple’s Ultra 3 has satellite communications and a more mature collection of route, Backtrack, offline-map and dive features. Decide whether battery endurance or emergency and navigation services matter more.
Buying advice
Samsung’s December 2025 US MSRP sheet lists Galaxy Watch Ultra LTE variants at $649.99. That is an MSRP reference, not a guaranteed current price. Samsung promotions, carrier offers, retailer discounts and trade-in values change frequently.
